NHL Best Pick of the Week: New York Islanders vs. Columbus Blue Jackets

The 2019-20 season NHL season is up and running, and there are a ton of games on the schedule for the week. A lot of the games on the schedule feature evenly matched teams, but there are a ton of great betting matchups as well. A Saturday night game between the New York Islanders and Columbus Blue Jackets is our NHL Best Pick of the Week.

The New York Islanders sit in second place in the Metropolitan Division with a total of 34 points so far this season. The Islanders recently rattled off five straight wins and they look like a Stanley Cup contender this season. Columbus enters the week with just 22 points on the season, and they are one of the worst teams in the Eastern Conference. The Blue Jackets have been playing better of late, but this will be a tough matchup.

Islanders Don't Give Up Many Goals

The biggest reason for the Islanders great start to the season has been the strength of their defense and goaltending. New York is allowing just 2.43 goals per game this season, and they have killed off close to 85 percent of their own penalties. Goaltender Thomas Greiss has allowed just 2.07 goals against per game, and has gone 9-1-0 during his 10 starts this season.

The New York Islanders can also score goals as well, and they are averaging more than 3.1 goals per game this season. Center Matthew Mathew Barzal leads the team with nine goals, 11 assists and 20 points so far this season, but he has gotten plenty of help as well. The Islanders have converted on 20 percent of their power play opportunities this season, and they are dangerous when giving an opportunity.

Blue Jackets Looking For Offense

The Columbus Blue Jackets lost a ton of offensive weapons in the offseason, and it has really hurt their offensive performance this season. Columbus comes into this week averaging less than 2.7 goals per game, but they have been great on the power play. Center Pierre-Luc DuBois leads the team with 10 goals and 17 points on the season, but he needs more help from the other forwards.

Columbus is giving up close to 3.3 goals per game this season, but that side of the ice has definitely been the better unit. Joonas Korpisalo is giving up just 3.03 goals against average this season, and he has been the best player in the net for the Blue Jackets. Columbus will face a tough test on defense and in the net in this one.

New York Islanders Easily Handle Blue Jackets

This matchup is not really close on paper, and it likely won't be close on the ice as well. The New York Islanders have not been allowing many goals this season, and the Columbus Blue Jackets really struggle to score. Don't expect this game to be close for very long because the Islanders will take control on home ice. Bet the New York Islanders over the Columbus Blue Jackets in the NHL Best Pick of the Week.
