NHL Game of the Week: Buffalo Sabres at Washington Capitals

The 2019-20 NHL season is in full swing, and teams are starting to play more than once or twice a week. There are some terrific games on the schedule this week, but this biggest game will take place in our Nation's capital on Friday night. The Washington Capitals will host the Buffalo Sabres in a battle of two of the top teams in the Eastern Conference.

Washington enters the week with an 8-2-3 record and they have already racked up 19 points on the season. The Capitals lead the Metropolitan Division and they look like Stanley Cup contenders so far this season. Buffalo has come out of nowhere to lead the Atlantic Division with 19 points as well. The Sabres have a young team, but their young stars are getting the job done this season. This should be a high scoring affair in Washington D.C.

Sabres Dominating on Power Play

The Buffalo Sabres are one of the top offenses in the NHL, and their power play is a big reason why. Buffalo has converted on close to 29 percent of their power play opportunities this season, and Jack Eichel has led the charge. Eichel leads the team with six goals and ten assists, and he will have the Capitals attention in this game.

Goaltending has been a strength of this team as well, but they will be tested in a big way in this game. The Sabres enter the week allowing just 2.5 goals per game, but keeping the Capitals under four goals might lead to victory. Carter Hutton has posted a 6-1 record in net, and is allowing just 2.27 goals against per game.

Washington Scoring Goals Like Crazy

The Washington Capitals have always been deadly on the offensive end of the ice, but they have turned it up a notch this season. Washington is scoring close to four goals per game, and Alex Ovechkin has returned to form. Ovechkin leads the team with nine goals so far this season, and John Carlson has pitched in with 16 assists and five goals. The Capitals aren't afraid to take chances on defense in an effort to create some scoring opportunities at the other end.

Keeping pucks out of the back of the net has been a struggle at times for Washington, but their offense usually bails them out. Ilya Samsonov has outperformed Braden Holtby so far this season, but both goalies have picked up four wins. Samsonov has stopped close to 92 percent of the shots he has faced, while Holtby has stopped just 86 percent.

Capitals Win Huge Showdown

Both of these teams have been red-hot to start the season, but look for the Sabres to start to cool off. Buffalo will still be a playoff team this season, but they are facing a huge test in this game. The Capitals are always tough to beat on their home ice, and they have the goal scorers to put up a ton of goals in this game.Bet the Washington Capitals over the Buffalo Sabres in the NHL Game of the Week.
