The Colorado Avalanche have come back to tie their series with the Dallas Stars 3-3, forcing a Game 7. The Avalanche were down two games to none, and then 3-1, winning twice in elimination games to stay alive. The folks who trusted my prediction in the second-round series playoff betting preview, are now primed for a satisfying payout. Colorado took a long way around, no doubt, but they have Dallas right where they want it.
The Avalanche storm into Game 7 as favorites, having rallied to pull the Stars out of the sky. Dallas has been resilient and the team never seems to quit, but all of the momenta is with Colorado. The Avalanche has stolen the soul of the Dallas Stars. Current NHL betting odds are giving Dallas (-225) 1½ goals, but I’d roll with Colorado (+185) to cover. Following this train of thought, another obvious winner is the Avalanche Moneyline of -125 to win the game straight up. Keys for Colorado
$ Colorado needs to keep doing what it has done in the last two games. Bury the Stars alive in goals (the Avalanche scored 10 goals in two games). Nathan MacKinnon is playing like a man possessed, and can’t be kept off the scoring sheet.
$ Keep spreading the puck around! In Game 5, there were 13 Colorado players who recorded at least one point in the 6-3 blowout. Stars’ G Ben Bishop got pulled with 6:17 left in the first period, after falling behind 4-0. Anton Khudobin didn’t fare much better, getting scored on 50 seconds after coming into the game. The Avalanche goals need to continue coming in flurries.
$ Colorado goalie Michael Hutchinson is the hot hand between the pipes, and he’ll need to keep riding that wave to overcome Dallas’s desperation. Hutchinson is 2-0 in the last two elimination games vs the Stars, posting a 1.86 GAA and a .938 SV%. Colorado has used three different starting goalies in this wild series, and Hutchinson has been a savior. Without Hutchinson’s clutch performances in goal, there wouldn’t be a Game 7.
My final prediction for this entertaining series is that the Avalanche win Game 7, 5-3. I’m imagining an empty-netter by Colorado being the final nail in Dallas’s postseason coffin, smothering the Stars’ Stanley Cup aspirations.
