All Over for Blackhawks
Chicago has lost six straight and has nothing left to play for. The Blackhawks got smacked around by Carolina 5-2 on Monday and came up small again in Tuesday’s 6-3 loss against the Hurricanes. Chicago has given up at least five goals in three straight losses while going 2-7-1 over its last 10 games.
The Blackhawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Carolina on Tuesday but allowed the Hurricanes to tie the score in the second period before giving up four goals in the third period.
“We’re learning some hard lessons for sure,” Blackhawks coach Jeremy Colliton said. “We want to win hockey games. We want to find 60 minutes of consistency, and that’s where we’re at.”
Chicago averages a modest 2.8 goals (17th), but allows 3.3 goals per game defensively (26th). The Blackhawks have gone 10-14-3 on the road.
‘Canes On Cruise Control
Carolina is in first place in the Central Division standings, four points up on Tampa Bay and Florida. More importantly, the Hurricanes have the look of a very legitimate Stanley Cup title contender.
Andrei Svechnikov had a pair of goals and an assist and Nino Niederreiter added two goals against Chicago on Tuesday night. Carolina has won five straight and looks ready for the postseason.
“It wasn’t a great game tonight,” coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “We got by with a lot of good efforts. The talent we have on the team kind of won us this game, but it wasn’t pretty.”
The Hurricanes have gone 7-0-3 over its last 10 games. Carolina averages a healthy 3.3 goals to rank ninth in scoring. The ‘Canes limit the opposition to 2.3 goals per contest to rank an even more impressive third in goals allowed. The Hurricanes have gone a blistering 20-3-4 at home.
Back Hurricanes Against Puck Line
Chicago has hit the skids at absolutely the wrong time and has the look of a team that has given up. The Blackhawks have allowed five goals or more in four of their last six games while dropping three straight and 10 of 12 against Carolina. The Hurricanes have dominated the Blackhawks the last two games, scoring 11 combined goals while limiting Chicago to five.
The Blackhawks are 6-20 in their last 26 games as a road underdog and 1-4 in their last five road games. Carolina, meanwhile, has gone 5-0 in its last five games against a team with a losing record and 20-7 in their last 27 home games. Chicago has dropped five straight road games against the ‘Canes. The favorite is 9-2 in the last 11 meetings and 5-1 in the last six meetings. This one should be over before the start of the third period. Carolina wins and covers the Puck Line odds and the online betting in the process.
Pick: Carolina -1½ goals
