Tuesday’s game between the Montreal Canadiens and Ottawa Senators marks the second matchup in three days between these two teams. The Ottawa Senators won the first game on Sunday by a 3-2 result in overtime. The Canadiens are now 9-5-3 on the year but have only won one of their past five contests. Meanwhile, the Ottawa Senators started the year off 2-12-1 but have since won three out of their last five. Can the Canadiens snap out of their funk and pick up a win here? Let’s take a closer look at the online betting odds.
Montreal Canadiens vs Ottawa Senators
Date: Tuesday, February 23rd, 2020 – 7:00 PM ET
Location: Canadian Tire Centre, Ottawa, Ontario
NHL Odds: MTL -220, OTT +180
Montreal is expected to get a boost to their defense when their goalie Carey Price returns to the lineup. Price is 27-10-6 in his career against the Senators but is 5-3-2 on the current season (overall), boasting an .893 save percentage. His below average play hasn’t affected the team that badly as they have scored the eighth most goals per game at 3.35. That scoring has been led by Tyler Toffoli and Jeff Petry, each of them leading the team with 16 points. However, Toffoli has scored 11 goals on the year while Petry has six. This team can be dangerous on the offensive end and will need to put their best foot forward in this miniseries with the Senators in order to even it up. They blew it as a favorite in the first meeting, so we’ll see if they can rebound this time around.
Brady Tkachuk has had all of the headlines for this team after banking in the game-winning goal against the Canadiens a few nights ago. His offensive prowess has helped him lead the roster in total points, goals and assists on the year. He is followed closely behind by Josh Norris in both the points and assists categories though. Regardless, Ottawa is scoring the fourth lowest number of goals per game in the league at 2.35 and it’s hard to win when that’s the case. They’re also allowing the most goals scored per game at 4.00, so that makes it tough in the game of hockey.
The Senators are going to be getting one of Matt Murray or Marcus Hogberg in the net for this matchup, with each of them underperforming this year. Murray has an .883 save percentage while Hogberg holds a .859. If Ottawa wants to win this matchup and keep momentum going, it starts on the defensive end. Whether their defensive lines are struggling or the goalies themselves are in a funk, this team cannot allow opposing teams to tee off on net the entire game. It also doesn’t help that they are 24th in penalty kill percentage this year, something else that they need to get fixed to avoid falling behind early on. Ottawa will keep this game close, but if they aren’t able to lock up defensively, they could end up splitting the series.
Canadiens vs Senators Prediction:
Canadiens 4, Senators 3
