John Sadler is a champion trainer and he has a strong chance of winning the 2021 Kentucky Derby with Rock Your World.
The 3-year-old made headlines when winning the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby and there is a stack of hype around the colt.
Online sports betting markets now have him on the second line of betting for the May 1 Run for the Roses behind Essential Quality. However, it’s a wide-open market and bettors get value odds for every listed runner.
We look through the form of Rock Your World, who is looming as a major Kentucky Derby contender.
Betting is open for the 2021 Kentucky Derby, which runs on May 1.
Rock Your World Form
The son of Candy Ride kicked off his career with a win at Santa Anita on the turf before winning the Pasadena Stakes at the same track on grass, too.
It was worth $100,000 at Santa Anita Park, but the Pasadena Stakes showed the potential of Rock Your World.
He raced greenly in the win, but he responded well under pressure and that’s the making of a Kentucky Derby horse. He won by 2¼ lengths with Umberto Risoli in the saddle, who waited until the sixteenth pole to get going.
“This horse is still really green,” Sadler told BloodHorse. “It’s funny, we schooled him yesterday morning at 9:30 in the paddock, no problem. Today, when we put the saddle on him, tight as hell! He’s got lessons to learn, but he’s got a lot of talent. He was very game and he galloped out super. We love that about him.”

A spot in the Santa Anita Derby awaited Rock Your World, who started as the third favorite behind Medina Spirit.
Rock Your World went to the front from post two and was never headed. He recorded soft fractions throughout, which enabled him to produce a scintillating turn-of-foot at the top of the straight.
Getting to the front is key in races like the Kentucky Derby, so being in that position is an ideal lead-up for the second favorite.
The $650,000 purchase is well on his way, but our only query is not having had experience elsewhere. All three runs have come at Santa Anita, and unfortunately for Rock My World, the Kentucky Derby runs at Churchill Downs.
Not every thoroughbred handles a different environment, so it will be interesting to see how he settles.
Sadler Prepares For Derby Tilt
Having a runner in the Kentucky Derby is the ultimate thrill for horse racing trainers. Sadler has been there but the preparation is a little different with Rock Your World.
His run in the Santa Anita Derby was his first try on dirt after scoring two wins on turf. Sadler was always confident he could make the transition, so the Santa Anita Derby win was a relief.
“You’re hoping, but it’s one of those things, you don’t know until you do it,” said Sadler. “We’re thrilled the way things worked out.”

Sadler has yet to win the Derby, with a sixth in the 1993 edition with Corby his best result. However, he has won the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Churchill Downs with Accelerate, so he knows how to win the big races.
“I’ve never won the Derby, but last time I was there we won the Breeders’ Cup Classic (in 2018 with Accelerate), so I’m looking forward to going back to Louisville,” Sadler continued. “We’ve run four horses in the Kentucky Derby before but haven’t won.”
Despite having had no success winning the Derby, Rock Your World is in good hands and demands attention with the online racebook.
Following his win in the Santa Anita Derby, Rock Your World has been a big firmer in betting. He is now at 7-1 behind Essential Quality and we wouldn’t be surprised to see those odds firm over the next few weeks.
