UEFA Champions League 2020 Betting Outlook
Second Leg Ties
Juventus will host Lyon Aug. 7, with the French side leading 1-0 from a home win in February. Juventus are closing in on a ninth-straight Italian title while Lyon has not played a competitive match since March 8 but will face PSG in the Coupe de la Ligue final on July 31 in Paris. Juventus is -260 to win on Aug. 7 but needs to be careful not to allow a valuable away goal.
Manchester City won against Real Madrid 2-1 before the COVID break, and that’s a huge advantage of two away goals given that the Spanish side won 11 straight games after the restart to claim a historic La Liga title. Real Madrid is +295 to win in Manchester on Aug. 7 with the hosts at -135, and Los Blancos need to win by at least two goals to advance.
Bayern Munich thrashed Chelsea 3-0 in London in the first leg and are -225 to win in the return leg in Munich on August 8. Chelsea is +525 to simply win this game, and they need to win by at least three goals to qualify.
The fun game should be Barcelona hosting Napoli after the teams tied 1-1 in Italy. Barca got a crucial away goal in that game and are -165 to win and advance while Napoli is +415 to win and advance.
The one-legged quarterfinals start in Lisbon on Aug. 12 as Atalanta faces PSG. Atalanta has played well in Serie A since the restart and is +190 to beat the French Champions. PSG will get a competitive game under their belt July 31 before heading to Lisbon, and they are +120 to reach the semifinals.
The Aug. 13 game features RB Leipzig against Atletico Madrid. Both teams struggled a bit after the restart but finished in their league’s top four. Leipzig won’t have Timo Werner, and they are +245 to win this game, while Atleti is +125.
The Barcelona/Napoli winner faces the Bayern Munich/Chelsea winner on August 14 while the Real Madrid/Manchester City winner will play the Lyon/Juventus winner on August 15 in the other quarterfinal. The two winners from these quarters play in one August 18 semifinal.
The final is set for August 23 in Lisbon. Right now Manchester City and Bayern Munich listed as co-favorites at +350 and struggling Barcelona at +500. PSG is the favorite from the top bracket at +550 with Atletico Madrid and Atalanta at +1200 just ahead of RB Leipzig at +1500.
Real Madrid is a nice dark horse given the way they have played the last two months. Their odds are at +2000, but they have to overturn that 2-1 aggregate to City just to get to Lisbon. Oddsmakers don’t expect Napoli (+6500), Lyon (+7500), or Chelsea (+15000) to win their round of 16 legs and advance to Lisbon, let alone win the biggest trophy in European soccer.
PSG are a very intriguing bet at +550. On paper, they are clearly the best team out of their quarterfinal bracket. However, they have annually struggled in the late stages of Champions League play. The case can be made they will be the freshest of the teams in Lisbon. Since they have not played competitive games over the last five months while the teams from England, Spain, and Italy have been playing every three days since mid-June.
