FIFA Women’s World Cup

FIFA Women's World Cup
France - June 7th - July 7th

The FIFA Women's World Cup kicked off on June 7th with a monster win from the host country, France in front of over 45,000 screaming fans.. Les Bleus defeated South Korea 4-0 in the tournament opener.

Twenty-four teams make up the field at this year's event. The teams are split into six groups. The top two teams from each group advance to the round of 16.

France and Norway sit atop Group A with three points. Nigeria and South Korea are currently in third and fourth in the group. France should easily finish atop this group and advance. In fact, don't expect the standings here to look much different when the matches are complete.

In Group B, Spain and Germany have three points a piece. They've defeated China and South Africa to get there. Spain and Germany are powerhouse clubs. They will both advance to the round of 16. They are scheduled to meet on June 12th at noon ET. This is the must-watch game of the group.

Brazil and Italy each have three points in Group C. Italy needed a late goal to put them ahead of Australia and hurt the Aussie's chances of advancing. Brazil made easy work of Jamaica in a 3-0 win. Australia is more likely to advance than Jamaica, though they'll need Italy to underperform against Jamaica and lose to Brazil.

Group D see the ladies of England as the lone point-getters thus far. They beat Scotland 1-0 in the group opener. Argentina is scheduled to face Japan on June 10th. That is the match to watch in this group. Both teams are skilled and have what it takes to advance to the second round. England will struggle against both teams.

Groups E and F are yet to play a match. Cameroon, Canada, the Netherlands, and New Zealand make up Group E. I like Canada and the Netherlands to come out on top. Cameroon is a team to look out for. They face Canada first. If they hold their own, don't be surprised to see them advance.

Chile, Sweden, Thailand, and the United States are the group teams listed in Group F. Team Chile and Thailand are overmatched in this group. USA is a -5 point favorite over Thailand on June 11th. Sweden is a -2 favorite to win over Chile. I wouldn't count out the women from Chile. They may compete against Sweden and play to a draw. If Sweden or Team USA slips up, Chile might find themselves in the next round.
