Inter Milan had more trouble than expected to beat Cagliari in the latest Italian Serie A fixture, but they did it, which is good for them because AC Milan, Juventus and Atalanta also won.
Italian Serie A Breakdown
Streak Propelled Inter Milan to the Top
As we already mentioned, Inter Milan defeated Cagliari 1-0 thanks to Matteo Damian scoring effort. The “Neroazurros” won their last 11 Italian Serie A games in a row, including huge victories against Lazio, AC Milan and Atalanta.
During those 11 victories, Inter Milan hasn’t conceded more than one goal per game, and they won 1-0 just three times. Overall, Inter Milan’s numbers are really good; they have a 23-5-2 record, they’ve scored 69 goals and allowed 27.
Individually, Romelu Lukaku has scored 21 goals. He follows Cristiano Ronaldo, who has scored 25, in the league’s top scorers’ chart.
“Only Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland are at Lukaku’s level,” said former Inter Milan striker Ivan Zamorano to Skysports.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Juventus defeated Genoa 3-1 to remain in third place with 62 points, 12 points less than Inter Milan and one point less than AC Milan, who managed to beat Parma 3-1 despite having Zlatan Ibrahimović expelled.
Juventus will be facing Inter Milan in fixture 37, but everything could be defined by then.
Atalanta defeated Fiorentina 3-2 to grab their fourth straight victory and maintain the two-point advantage over Napoli, who beat Sampdoria 2-0, in the race for fourth place.
Juventus won the last eight Italian Serie A titles in a row, and now Inter Milan could become the new king with a pretty big advantage over second place, maybe that’s why there are no Italian teams in the UEFA Champions League Round of 8.
What about Relegation?
While the top and winning the title is clearly in Inter Milan’s hands, the relegation zone is far from having the last three teams defined, but Cagliari, Parma and Crotone can’t afford to lose anymore.
Torino, who is in seventeenth place, drew 2-2 against Juventus and more recently defeated Udinese 1-0 to increase their advantage over Cagliari to five points. All Cagliari, Parma and Crotone, current teams in the relegation zone, lost last weekend, but Crotone with just 15 points is the only one without too much hope.
Parma has scored 29 goals, just four more goals than Cristiano Ronaldo alone.
