Las Vegas Welcomes Back UFC
Saturday night will feature a handful of exciting fights in Las Vegas and here we cover just a couple of the UFC on ESPN betting options with a preview and a prediction. With the Brunson and Shahbazyan fight as the main card, both will be looking to prove that they belong with the best fighters in UFC. We will also take a look at the stats and UFC betting odds for the welterweight fight between Vicente “The Silent Assassin” Luque vs. Randy Brown fight.
Derek Brunson (20-7-0) vs Edmen Shahbazyan (11-0-0)
August 1st, 2020 – UFC Apex Facility, Las Vegas
Betting Line: Brunson (+250), Shahbazyan (-350)
UFC returns to Las Vegas on Saturday night with an exciting main card for the evening. It will be a battle featuring two strong middleweights. The veteran Derek Brunson will face off against fearsome up-and-comer Edmen Shahbazyan.
Coming into this fight ranked No. 8, Brunson will be looking to prove to his critics that he still has what it takes to fight with the best. His career has been inconsistent in the Octagon and he seems to go into these weird streaks where he wins a couple, loses a couple, etc. It has been a long time since he got hot and won several fights in a row.
He is, however, starting one of his winning streaks and will look to win a third fight in a row against Shahbazyan. One thing he has going for himself in this fight is the fact that he has a three-inch longer reach than his opponent, which is pretty significant in MMA.
Despite being the underdog in this fight, Brunson shouldn’t be taken lightly. The 36-year-old from North Carolina has had great success against several top tier fighters, although he has struggled against the most elite. Even though he hasn’t beaten top fighters, he has shared the octagon with the likes of Adesanya and Robert Whittaker.
On the other end of the spectrum is a young and powerful Edmen Shahbazyan. Only 22, this young man is considered one of the most promising new fighters on the UFC roster. He is currently ranked No. 9 in the middleweight and for good reason. Perhaps a little cocky, he has stated that he has set his sights on becoming the youngest champion in history.
So far, he has an impressive record. He is undefeated in the UFC and will want to defeat Brunson in order to put himself in a better position for a title fight. It will be exciting to watch how this young and aggressive fighter fares against an experienced brawler like Brunson.
At -350, it’s a low payout betting on this match, at least on the youngster, but for good reason. He is well on his way to an impressive career.
Vicente Luque (18-7-1) vs Randy Brown (12-3-0)
August 1st, 2020 – UFC Apex Facility, Las Vegas
Betting Line: Luque (-200), Brown (+160)
Saturday evening will also feature an exciting welterweight showdown between Vicente “The Silent Assassin” Luque and Randy “Rudeboy” Brown. Luque is coming into this fight ranked No. 11 while Brown is unranked.
Looking at their basic stats, they have fairly similar records with both boasting far more wins than losses. Brown is also 4” taller than Luque and has 2.5 inches more reach than his opponent.
On the other hand, Luque has almost twice as high significant strikes landed per minute than Brown. He also has roughly 5% more accuracy with significant strikes than Brown. With these statistics in mind, it would appear that Randy Brown has his work cut out for him on Saturday night.
Overall Luque is considered the more rounded fighter and is known for his ferocity in his fights. With Saturday’s fight being fought in a smaller ring this will only play into Luque’s style and will make it harder for Brown to keep his distance.
On top of being a better all-around fighter, Luque has been on a hot streak lately. He has won seven of his last eight fights and doesn’t look to slow down any time soon. Of his last eight fights his only loss was to Stephen Thompson in November of 2019. Keep in mind that he lost this fight because of a unanimous decision not a KO.
These two fighters have very contrasting fighting styles which will make for an interesting match to watch and bet on. Luque tends to stalk his opponents and not move around too much, conserving energy for the big hits.
Randy Brown, who is a whopping 6’3”, likes to run circles around his opponents and land quick jabs and kicks. This strategy plays to his height advantage.
Although we shouldn’t write Randy Brown off, there are very few experts out there who are even giving him a chance. At -200 for Luque, the odds are way better for the favorite in this fight when compared to the Brunson Shahbazyan fight.
If Luque sticks to his strengths and can get in close to Brown he should be able to use his impressive strike accuracy to his advantage and win.
While payouts might be small betting on these two favorites, if you parlay the two, you will almost double your money if they both pull off their expected wins.
