American Idol Betting Odds & Lines

Defying the American Idol odds as a longshot contender early in the season, Jamal Roberts, a grade school physical education teacher from Mississippi, claimed the Season 23 crown on Sunday’s finale.

Roberts, who emerged as the betting favorite heading into the final, delivered a performance that paid off big for viewers who wagered on his remarkable versatility.

In what bookmakers would call a decisive victory, Roberts defeated runner-up country singer John Foster and third-place Breanna Nix, securing the win with a monumental 26 million total votes.

The American Idol odds board shifted dramatically throughout the season, with Roberts’ stock rising steadily as handicappers recognized his potential for the upset victory.

Roberts, a 27-year-old father of three whose underdog story captivated bettors nationwide, sealed his championship performance with The Temptations’ R&B classic “Just My Imagination

(Running Away With Me)” and Teeks’ soulful “First Time” during the finale.

American Idol 2025: Top Fan Questions Answered

As the finale approaches, Jamal Roberts (-300 odds) is the heavy favorite to win American Idol Season 23. His consistent performances, vocal power, and strong fan support make him the most likely champion.

  • Winner: Receives a recording contract (historically valued around $250,000-$1,000,000) and a cash prize (typically $125,000-$250,000)
  • Runner-up: Generally receives a smaller recording development deal (around $175,000)
  • 3rd-5th Place: Receive appearance fees for the American Idol tour (approximately $100,000 each)

Jennifer Hudson is widely considered the most successful non-winner in American Idol history. Despite finishing only 7th in Season 3 (2004), Hudson has achieved extraordinary success

Lady Gaga is perhaps the most notable rejection. Before becoming a global superstar with 13 Grammy Awards and over 170 million records sold worldwide, Stefani Germanotta (Lady Gaga) was rejected during the preliminary auditions for Season 3 in 2004. She never even made it to the celebrity judges.

Carrie Underwood is widely regarded as the most popular and commercially successful American Idol winner. Since winning Season 4 in 2005. Kelly Clarkson, the original American Idol winner (Season 1), ranks a close second.
