Greece Basket League

Overview

The Greek Basket League or the Greek A1 Basketball League, is the highest level of professional basketball to be played in Greece. The league was founded in 1927, but didn’t become a fully professional league until 1992.

The professional basketball league is managed and run by HEBA, and falls under the FIBA Europe confederation. There are 12 teams in the league, and the league runs on a promotion and relegation system with the lower level (A2 Basket League).

Current Greek Basket League teams:

  • AEK
  • Aris
  • Mesologgi Baxi
  • Ionikos Nikaias
  • Iraklis Thessaloniki
  • Kolossos Rodou
  • Larisa
  • Lavrio Megabolt
  • Panathinaikos
  • PAOK
  • Peristeri
  • Promitheas Patras

Teams who place last are relegated to A2 Basket League, and the top A2 team is promoted to the GBL. The season runs from October to June, which is a long season like the NBA, but only consisting of 22 games during the regular season, opposed to the NBA’s 86 game season.

Panathinaikos is the most successful Greek Basket League team by a long shot. They have 39 titles, with the closest runner up being Olympiacos (relegated to A2 in 2019) with 12. Panathinaikos has played in the top-tier for 71 seasons, followed by only a few teams with 60+ seasons, so it isn’t a huge shock that they have such a substantial lead.

HOW TO BET ON Greece Basket League

When it comes to betting on the Greek Basket League, you are in luck. Here at BetUS Sportsbook, we have a great selection of Greek Basket League odds and lines, and you can find odds on every game. We will have a selection options for you to choose from, and let’s quickly go over them before you get started.

Moneyline betting on the Greek Basket League is exactly like a moneyline on any other sport. You are choosing which team you believe will win the game outright. You don’t have to do much more than that – pick a winner.

Point spreads will be listed and either team will be assigned a spread. One team, the favored team, will have to win the game by more than the number listed, and the underdog will have to win or lose by less than that number of points.

Totals are betting options that allow you to bet on the total number of points scored by both teams, but added together. The number will be high, but it’s the total number of points scored by two teams, so you will need to decide if you think the teams will score more or less than that number.

There won’t be a huge selection of prop bets on regular season games, like you would find in North American sports, but you can find some fun props for certain, higher profile games. These bets are placed on outcomes that have nothing to do with the final score, or who wins the game.

Futures betting allows you to place a wager on which team will win the title – the Greek Cup. You can bet on a Greek Basket League’s odds to win the Greek Cup early in the year, or even during the preseason. You can find these odds to be risky, as they are essentially a one in thirteen chance of being correct. You will, however, win a huge profit if you’re correct.

If you think you have everything you need to bet on the Greek Basket League odds, you should head over to the sportsbook to check out what odds and lines are available. If you need more help or more resources, our sports betting guide will be a great learning center for your betting needs.
