Horse Racing

Overview

Brief History

The Sport of Kings has been around since humans learned to train and ride horses. Some of the oldest race tracks still active in America have been open since the mid-1800’s. The Kentucky Derby, the most famous race in the US, at Churchill Downs, the most famous race place, has been running every year since 1875.

Horse Racing Main Events During the Year

Horse Racing’s biggest races revolve around the three-year-old crop with three races known as the Triple Crown. All the biggest horse racing legends you know have won this first race, the Kentucky Derby. The Kentucky Derby is held at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky on the first Saturday in May. Horses run in qualifiers to be a part of the race known as the “Run for the Roses” which houses the most talented 18-20 horses in their age group.

The second jewel of the Triple Crown is the Preakness Stakes held at Pimlico Racecourse in Baltimore, Maryland. This race always takes place two weeks after the Kentucky Derby. Nowadays, horses do not regularly run within two weeks of their last race but if the winner of the Kentucky Derby feels like becoming a legend, they come back and run.

The third and final leg of the Triple Crown in the Belmont Stakes in Elmont, New York. Known as the “Test of Champions,” what is unique about the Belmont is the distance is 1 ½ miles. This is the longest all of these horses will ever run in one race and that is why if a horse wins the first two legs, they’re truly a champion if they win the last. Only 13 horses have ever accomplished the feat.

Horse Racing Championships

The Breeder’s Cup Championships are held yearly in November and host 14 different races based on age, sex, distance, and different racing surfaces. Juvenile, two-year-old races are held on Fridays while the Championships for three-year-olds and up are held on Saturdays. The Winner of the Breeder’s Cup Classic, the final and biggest race of the meet, is usually awarded as the Horse of the Year.

Horse Racing Faqs

The most popular bet in the Sport of Kings is and has always been the Win wager. Simply place a minimum $2 wager on your favorite horse to beat all the other horses. Horses usually have odds from 1-1 to 100-1 so hitting a longshot can really pay.
What is different with horse racing from other types of betting is the fact that horse racing uses pari-mutuel wagering. You are not betting against a house or a casino. You are betting against what everyone else is betting on. So if you like a horse that a lot of people like, the odds on that horse winning, and the payout, will be lower. If you happen to like horses, or a combination or horses, that others do not like, you can win tons and tons of cash.
There are a ton of strategies to help you win at horse racing. One of the easiest strategies is to focus on the horse’s recent running history. Once horses get a taste of winning, they truly try to win every time. Another strategy is betting on the connections of a horse such as their jockey or trainer. Some jockeys win 30% of the time, and some trainers have even higher winning percentages than that.
About 40% of the time in races in the USA, the favorite at post time wins the race. If you like low odds and want to win consistently, simply bet the favorite.
If you really want to try and break the bank with some horse racing parlays, you can achieve this by either betting vertically (exacta, trifecta, superfecta exotics) or horizontally (pick 3, pick 4, pick 5, and pick 6’s). These payouts can be in the thousands and hundreds of thousands of dollars. It takes a true handicapper to be good enough to pick a few winners in a row and have the confidence to put their money on these longshot bets.

Rolling If Bets (RIF) allow you to use the balance (amount) from existing wagers to make a new wager. As long as existing wagers have not been graded, the amount wagered can still be used to make new wagers. However, if your original wager loses, the Rolling If Bet is then cancelled. There are two options for ties (pushes); you can specify if you want the Rolling If Bet to continue in case of a tie or simply cancel the RIF.

Rolling If Bets are:
  • only allowed on straight bets, Parlays and Teasers.
  • not available with Free Plays or Futures and Props
  • only available if you have pre existing, non graded wagers
  • you can only use the funds from the amount of the pre existing wager
How to Place a Rolling If Bet:
  • Choose any straight, parlay or teaser and Place it on the Bet Slip
  • Click on the Rolling If Bet button next to the wager detail
  • In the RIF dropdown, choose a wager that you want to use for RIF
  • Click on "If Win Only" or "If Win or Push" (explained above)
  • Fill in the amount and confirm your wager (the system will not allow you a higher amount than what is available)
