James Norris Trophy Lines

The James Norris Memorial Trophy is awarded each year to the NHL’s defensive player of the year, who demonstrates all-around skill and ability in the position consistently throughout the season.

The award was introduced in the 1953-1954 season and is named after James Norris, the long-time owner of the Detroit Red Wings who passed away in 1952. The legendary Bobby Orr of the Boston Bruins has the most Norris trophies with eight consecutive wins from 1968 to 1975.

It can be difficult to predict which defenseman will win the honor at the start of the season, but as we saw with Bobby Orr, you can win multiple seasons in a row, so if a strong defenseman can show consistency through another season, you will have a good idea who to bet on.

As soon as a defensive player begins to perform well early in the season, you should keep an eye out and lock in your wagers early to ensure you are locking in that value. The earlier you place your futures bet, the more likely you are to get the best value and the best futures odds.

In his second season in the NHL, Adam Fox of the New York Rangers won his first James Norris Trophy in the 2021-22 season, only the second defenseman to win the honor before starting their third season (the first was Bobby Orr). Fox led all defensive players with 42 assists, five goals, and 23 power-play points.

Betting on the Jack Norris trophy recipient is a fun way to make the season a little more exciting and see if you know your stuff well enough to predict the defensive player of the year. Be sure to keep an eye on your best D-men and your Norris Trophy picks throughout the season by keeping an eye on this page for updates and any NHL odds movement. The James Norris Memorial Trophy is awarded to the National Hockey League’s defensive player of the year. The trophy recipient is a player who demonstrates excellence as a defensive player, but also all-around skill and abilities in their performances as a player. The award was first introduced in 1952 and named after James Norris, the long-time owner of the Detroit Red Wings.

Each season, a panel of sports journalists and sports media of the Professional Hockey Writers Association vote on the defensive player of the year, with players earning points per vote. The record for most James Norris Memorial awards is held by the legendary Bobby Orr, who earned eight consecutive wins from 1968 to 1975.

When it comes to betting on the recipient of the James Norris award, it can be one of the more simple bets you can make in a season, but usually isn’t the most popular. The James Norris recipient odds will be listed as a futures wager, which allows you to bet on a future outcome. The odds for the James Norris award are released early in the season at the same time you would see futures wagers for the Stanley Cup or divisional and conference odds start to populate.

While it can be difficult to predict which player might have an outstanding season on defense, you can take a look at a few notable players early on and go from there. When a player begins to show some promise, you should lock in your wager early to ensure the odds don’t shift or change, losing value. If you’re looking to make your James Norris award bet, you first need to do your research and determine which defensive player will prove himself. Is a player scoring more than usual from the point? Shutting down star players from even getting a shot off? Keep an eye on their stats.

Last year’s James Norris award winner was second year defenseman Adam Fox of the New York Rangers. He led all defensive players with 42 assists, five goals and 23 power play points and is only the second player to win this award in their second year in the league (the first was Bobby Orr).
