Overview

Brief History of MMA

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) has been around in some capacity for thousands of years, with early forms of combat sports existing as far back as Ancient China and Greece.

The more modern form of MMA originated in the 1900s, and UFC came to exist starting in 1993. Since then, the sport has continued to grow and evolve, as top-tier MMA promotions went from being part of a niche sport to flag bearers for one of the most popular sports in the world.

Main MMA Events Each Year

The biggest MMA events each year tend to come from UFC, as UFC is the biggest MMA promotion on the planet today.

UFC betting comprises the majority of MMA betting, though there are occasionally significant events in promotions such as Bellator, ONE, and other promotions as well. There are two main classifications of UFC events: smaller Fight Night cards and higher profile pay-per-view events.

Pay-per-view events typically feature championship bouts more often than Fight Night cards and more regularly feature the bigger names in the sport.

Fight Night cards often carry their own compelling fights and star power, but the pay-per-view cards are where the biggest fights take place.

But there are plenty of chances to find value in the UFC odds for both of these types of events.

BetUS Offer

When betting on UFC and other forms of MMA, the ultimate goal for bettors is to find value in the betting markets.

At BetUS, bettors can find that value with available promotions that can be applied to upcoming MMA events.

Offers such as deposit bonuses can help players build their bankroll prior to the start of a card, allowing bettors to wager on the fights in part with the house’s money.

MMA Betting Strategy

When it comes to MMA betting strategy, the most important thing a bettor can do is to watch previous fights from each fighter. Before placing any bets, it is imperative to understand how each fighter operates in the octagon and what their strengths and weaknesses are.

Doing that can shed light on where a fighter might succeed or fall short in their next fight based on the tendencies of their next opponent.

Another important piece of UFC betting strategy that can also be used in other forms of MMA betting is to maximize profitability by going after prop bets.

Prop bets offer action on hyper-specific components of each fight, far beyond simply betting on which fighter is going to win.

As a result, bettors can get more profitable odds by being courageous enough to attack the prop markets.

MMA Prop Bets

Prop bets are becoming an increasingly popular form of UFC betting and betting in other MMA promotions. They carry slightly more risk than simply betting on which fighter will win on the moneyline.

However, the specificity of these bets has the potential to make them much more profitable when done correctly.

For example, bettors can wager on the method of victory in a fight rather than who will have their hand raised at the end of a fight.

Bettors can wager on a fighter to win by knockout, submission, or decision, at more favorable prices than the moneyline.

While prop bets are not always the best choice, they are certainly worth looking at ahead of each fight.

Important MMA Championships

The most significant championships in MMA come from UFC, where the level of competition is thought to be the highest. Each weight class has its own championship in each promotion, from heavyweight to lighter weight classes, with promotions like Bellator and ONE having less prestigious titles than UFC.

But to the fighters that hold these titles in each promotion, they are the culmination of years of hard work to outperform the competition in their weight class.

Important MMA Fighters

Among the most important MMA fighters in modern fighting are some of the best UFC champions in the recent history of the sport.

On the men’s side, fighters like Kamaru Usman and Alexander Volkanovski have proven themselves to be well ahead of the rest of their respective weight classes.

In women’s MMA, Amanda Nunes was a two-division champion and has made a strong case as one of the best women’s MMA fighters of all time.

HOW TO BET ON Martial Arts Odds & Lines

To bet on MMA odds, there are two main components that bettors must understand: how to read the odds and what the different types of bets are.

Neither is all that difficult to grasp, but one without the other makes it very difficult to bet on MMA successfully.

Here, we will break down how to read MMA odds and the different betting markets that bettors will encounter them in.

How To Read MMA Odds

To read MMA odds, bettors must first look at whether those odds begin with a plus sign or minus sign.

Odds that begin with a plus sign signify the amount a bettor will win if they bet $100 on that market, while odds that begin with a minus sign signify the amount a bettor must risk to win $100.

For example, -120 odds mean a bettor has to risk $120 to win $100, while +120 odds mean that a $100 bet would yield a $120 profit.

Moneyline Betting

Moneyline betting is the same in MMA as it is in other sports, as the goal is to successfully predict which fighter is going to win each bout. In each fight, there is a favorite and an underdog, with underdogs paying out more than favorites based on the odds structure mentioned above.

While underdogs are deemed less likely to win each fight than the favorite, the superior payout often makes them an attractive option for bettors.

The key to successfully betting on MMA on the moneyline, the biggest key is to identify how each fighter likes to operate. That information can be used to exploit advantages that one fighter might have over their opponent.

While MMA bouts can be unpredictable, with every fight being one shot away from ending instantly, utilizing the styles of each fighter can lead to success in betting this sport.

Over/Under Betting

The over/under is an interesting betting market in MMA, as bettors are essentially asked to determine how long a fight will take to be completed.

Oddsmakers set a total number of rounds for each fight based on the tendencies of each fighter to end fights quickly or go to decision.

Bettors can then choose whether they think the fight will go over or under that number of rounds by the time a winner is declared.

It is worth noting that many fights will feature a half-round in their over/under numbers, which bettors should understand before they start utilizing this market.

In the case of a half-round, the subsequent round must go longer than the halfway point for the sake of the over. If that round ends before the midway point, the under would be declared the winner instead.

Prop Betting

The highest volume of UFC odds comes from the prop market, as bettors can wager on a large number of intricate options pertaining to how a fight will unfold.

Bettors can wager on everything from how a fight will end to which specific round it will end in.

While these are tougher to win than standard moneyline or over/under wagers in many cases, the odds are usually adjusted accordingly to enhance the payouts for those who pick these props correctly.

The biggest key to MMA prop betting is discipline, as bettors have so many options to navigate that it can be tempting to take all of them.

Instead, bettors should stick to what they know about each fighter and each matchup to give themselves the best chance to win.

Doing so will help each bettor extend their bankroll and maximize their chance of coming away with a profit on each card.

BetUS is a great option for MMA betting, as bettors can take advantage of an industry-leading array of betting markets to choose from. Our oddsmakers also offer fight odds well ahead of time, so bettors who have a deep understanding of the fight game can get value way ahead of time for each card.
To bet on UFC fight odds, bettors have to develop an understanding of each fighter on a deep level. Knowing how each fighter approaches their bouts is vital to identify their strengths and weaknesses that can be used to make money on their upcoming bouts.
From a strategic standpoint, bettors should try to find the UFC Vegas odds or odds originating from elsewhere that do not match each fighter’s win probability. Finding an underdog that is priced as too much of a longshot to win a fight, for example, can result in a more handsome payout for a fight with the same win probability as one with less favorable odds.
MMA fights consist of a predetermined number of rounds, usually three or five, that go on for anywhere from three to five minutes, depending on the promotion. The goal of each fighter is to win their bout by knockout, submission, or the decision of the judges if the entire allotted time elapses without a finish.
To make an MMA parlay, bettors can select multiple bets on a given fight card, whether they be moneyline, over/under, or prop bets. If all of those selections win, the parlay ticket will be graded as a winner, while even one loss would make the parlay a loser.
