Overview
Three years ago, anyone could enter the competition. It was restricted to just 13 teams competing. Swedish athletes defeated Estonia 6–2 in Stockholm on June 11, 1933.
It was the first match of the World Cup qualifying process when a player scored the first goal seven minutes into a World Cup qualifying game. Swedish captain Knut Kroon has been credited with the plan, but Estonian goalie Evald Tipner fell victim (own goal).
Since 1934, the number of teams qualifying for the finals has increased from 16 to 24 to 32. however, the qualification method has remained unchanged.
The teams were divided into groups from across the world to fight for a limited number of seats. The winners of intercontinental playoffs were given one or two slots. The world cup odds have also improved and there are more options for wagers.
