First Quarter – Kasatkina & Ostapenko Headline

Top Seeds: No. 1 Kasatkina and No. 5 Ostapenko

Dangerous Floaters: Collins, Zheng, Tiechmann

Daria Kasatkina of Russia and Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia headline a loaded top quarter that includes 2022 Australian Open finalist Danielle Collins of the USA. However, only Kasatkina, as one of the top four seeds in the tournament, receives a bye into the R16.

Kasatkina could face Swiss Jil Teichmann in the R16, a dangerous floater in this section of the draw. Alternatively, she could face one of two potential qualifying challengers – Mirjam Bjorklund or Elena-Gabriela Ruse (as per the qualifying tournament draw).

Ostapenko is the highest seeded threat who could challenge Kasastkina in this quarter. The pair are on course for a quarterfinal showdown. However, the Latvian has a tough path into the final eight.

In the R32, Ostapenko will start her campaign against Collins, who is a tough competitor. Then, she wouldl take on either Qinwen Zheng or a qualifier in the R16.  Both options present as stumbling blocks, especially if Leylah Fernandez emerges from the qualifiers into the main draw..

The 20-year-old Canadian, who was a finalist at the 2021 US Open. is through to the third round of the qualifying tournament, where she’ll take on Katarina Zavatska for a spot in the tournament.

Second Quarter – Kudermetova and Samsonova Headline

Top Seeds: No. 4 Kudermetova and No. 5 Samsonova

Dangerous Floaters: Mertens, Krejcikova and Badosa

Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova and Liudmila Samsonova highlight the second quarter, but only Kudermetova has a bye into the R16.

Kudermetova will face the winner of Elise Mertens and Martina Trevisan in the R16. Should she survive her opening match, she’ll come up against a number of potential stumbling blocks in the quarterfinals.

Samsonova is the highest seeded player in this section, but she opens against Paula Badosa in the R32. In the R16, dangerous floater Barbora Krejcikova or a qualifier that is yet to be determined could emerge. (The third qualifying spot in the main draw will be decided between veteran Yulia Putinseva and Nigina Abduraimova in a match scheduled for Sunday night).

Third Quarter – Rybakina and Haddad-Maia  Headline

Top Seeds: No. 3 Rybakina and No. 6 Haddad-Maia

Dangerous Floaters: Pliskova, Muguruza, Andreescu and Bouzkova

This could be the toughest section of the draw, the proverbial group of death. Third seed and Aussie Open runner-up Rybakina headlines this section along with Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad-Maia, but only the former has the first-round bye.

Rybakina’s  first match will see her face the winner of the blockbuster clash between Karolina Pliskova and Garbine Muguruza. Should she overcome either one of these big hitters, she could face a number of legitimate contenders as per the betting online odds.

Haddad-Maia is the highest seeded threat in this section and the player the bookmakers project as the likeliest quarterfinalist. However, the Brazilian has a physically demanding opener against Maria Bouzkova. Then, she could face Canada’s Bianca Andreescu in the R16. The Canadian is coming off a semifinal appearance in Thailand.

Fourth Quarter – Kontaveit and Bencic Headline

Top Seeds: No. 2 Bencic and No. 7 Kontaveit

Dangerous Floaters: Zhang

Belinda Bencic is the second seed and second overall favorite to win the title in Abu Dhabi. She falls into the fourth quarter of the draw alongside Anett Kontaveit. By all accounts, this is shaping up to be a favorable section.

Bencic gets a first round bye. In the R16, she will take on the winner of Marta Kostyuk and Sorana Cirstea. If the draw falls in line with the seeding, Kontaveit, as the highest seed, should emerge in the final eight. Experience the electrifying showdown between Benjamin Bonzi and Luca Van Assche at the ATP Marseille tournament.

Kontaveit’s path isn’t going to be straight forward. The Estonian opens against China’s Shuai Zhang. In the R16, she will face one of two qualifiers that are yet to be determined. That said, if we look at the qualifying draw, it’s clear that the potential candidates for these two coveted main draw spots are a) American Claire Liu or Dayana Yastremska and b) Rebecca Manarino and Ysaline Bonaventure.
