WTA Qatar Total Energies Open Preview
Swiatek Launches Defense Campaign
The Middle East swing moves toward the second of three tournaments in the Arabian Gulf this week, with the Qatar TotalEnergies Open getting underway from Feb 13-19.
World No. 1 and defending champion Iga Swiatek is back in action, appearing in her first WTA tournament since her untimely exit from the 2023 Australian Open.

The 22-year-old Polish sensation won her first title of last season in Doha, a title-winning performance in the Arabian Peninsula that proved to be a springboard for a historic run – winning a record 35 consecutive matches and six titles, capped off with the French Open.
Will Doha prove to be the charm again for Swiatek? The draw is stacked with Top 20 players and dangerous floaters, setting up a tricky path to victory.
Elsewhere, Americans Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff, France’s Caroline Garcia, Swiss Belinda Bencic, and late-wild card entrant Maria Sakkari are among the many tennis betting contenders eyeing the prize in Doha.

Swiatek Leads Top Half of the Draw
- Top Seeds: No. 1 Swiatek, No. 4 Gauff, No. 7 Bencic, and No. 8 Kudermetova
- Dangerous floaters: Collins, Azarenka, Kvitova, and Krejcikova
Swiatek heads up the tournament as the No. 1 seed and the top seed in the top half of the draw. She’s also predictably the bookmaker’s favorite at +200 to win the title, as we look at the latest tennis betting markets.
After a first-round bye (all top 4 seeds get a bye into the R16), she opens her campaign against dangerous floater Danielle Collins or a qualifier that is yet to be determined. But if we look at the qualifying draw, this qualifying spot could see either Leylah Fernandez or Karolina Pliskova advance (gulp!).
None of these options are ideal for Swiatek. Collins knocked her out of last year’s Australian Open and holds a 1-1 H2H. Against Fernandez and Pliskova, Swiatek is 2-0 combined, having beaten each player once.
Should Swiatek survive the R16, she could face Abu Dhabi champion Belinda Bencic for a spot in the semifinals. The Swiss defeated Liudmila Samsonova 1-6, 7-6 (8), 6-4 in Sunday’s final.
Alternatively, she could also face this year’s Australian Open semifinalist, Victoria Azarenka, or a qualifier. (According to the qualifying draw, this spot will feature the winner of Maria Bouzkova and Rebecca Manarino).
Fourth seed Coco Gauff and eighth seed Veronika Kudermetova headline the second quarter of the draw. As the highest seeds in this section, one of them could emerge to challenge Swiatek in the semifinals – or any other player, for that matter, that would emerge from the first quarter.
Petra Kvitova is the 1st player with more than 20 wins at the Qatar Open. Her 1R win over Irina Camelia Begu is her 21st.

Gauff’s path to the last four is tricky. She could face Petra Kvitova or Shuai Zhang in the R16. Should the 18-year-old American overcome the early threat to her bid, she could face Kudermetova in the quarterfinals.
Kudermetova’s path to the quarterfinals will see her take on Barbora Krejcikova in the R32. Should she survive this tough opener, she will take on the winner of Sofia Kenin and Abu Dhabi finalist Samsonova.
Projected Semifinal: Swiatek vs Kvitova
Pegula Headlines Bottom Half of the Draw
- Top Seeds: No. 2 Pegula, No. 3 Garcia, No. 5 Sakkari, and No. 6 Kasatkina
- Dangerous floaters: Badosa, Haddad-Maia, Ostapenko, and Keys
American Jessica Pegula leads the charge in the bottom half of the draw. And as the second-highest seed and next-best bet after Swiatek in the betting online markets, all eyes will be on her in what is a very tough section.
Pegula gets no favors from the draw, even though she gets a bye into the second round. The American will take on the winner of Jelena Ostapenko and fellow American Madison Keys. Pegula leads the series with Ostapenko 2-1 and Keys 1-0.
In the quarterfinals, the potential stumbling blocks come in the form of sixth seed Daria Kasatkina, Paula Badosa, Beatriz Haddad-Maia, and a qualifier. The qualifying spot will be decided between Madison Brengle and Viktorija Tomova, who will collide on Monday in the third and final round of qualifying.
Should Pegula navigate a successful course into the semifinals, the highest seed that would challenge her for a place in the Qatar Open final is third seed Caroline Garcia. The Frenchwoman headlines the third quarter of the draw and is tied with Pegula as the next best bet at +600 to win the title.

After a first-round bye, Garcia will take on the winner of Karolina Muchova and Martina Trevisan in the last 16. Garcia has never played Muchova, while against Trevisan, she boasts a 2-0 H2H. Witness an exhilarating clash between Nuno Borges and Daniel Altmaier at the Challenger Monterrey tournament.
In the quarterfinals, the 29-year-old Frenchwoman could face either Ekaterina Alexandrova, in-form Qinwen Zheng, No. 5 seed Maria Sakkari, or a qualifier. The qualifying spot will be decided between Elise Mertens and Elena Gabriela Ruse, who collide on Sunday in the third and final round of qualifying.
- Projected Semifinal: Garcia vs Haddad-Maia
- Projected Final: Garcia vs Kvitova
