2022 US Open Quarterfinals – Rublev vs Tiafoe

Tiafoe is Last American in the US Open Men's Singles Draw

Frances Tiafoe certainly knew how to secure a spot in the US Open quarterfinal for the first time.

Tiafoe, the No. 22 seed, upset the legendary Rafael Nadal in four sets to reach his second career Grand Slam quarterfinal and first since the 2019 Australian Open. He is the last American men’s player in the singles draw. Tiafoe wants to become the first American-born player in the US Open men’s singles final since Andy Roddick fell to Roger Federer in 2006. Roddick was the last U.S. player to win the title, accomplishing the feat in 2003. That ended a run where U.S. players won eight of 14 men’s singles titles.

Rublev Seems to be Rounding Into Form

Rublev appeared to be on his way to a routine start at the US Open when he took the first two sets against Laslo Djere. However, Rublev had to win a tough fifth set to move onto the second round, where he topped Sonwoo Kwon in straight sets.

It was back to the grind in the Round of 32, as Denis Shapovalov went up two sets to one and pushed Rublev to the brink. Rublev had to win a fifth-set tiebreaker 10-7 to advance in a match that took more than four hours.

In a showdown of top-10 ranked players, Rublev won the tough points to walk away with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win over Cameron Norrie to return to the US Open quarterfinals.

Something to keep in mind for those who bet online, Rublev faced just two break points in the match and won 80% of the points on his first serve.

Is Tiafoe Ready for an Encore?

More than a few people were ready to pat Tiafoe on the back for reaching the Round of 16 at the US Open. However, with a showdown against all-time great Rafael Nadal awaiting Monday, it was expected to be the end of the road for him.

Tiafoe won four tiebreakers and didn’t drop a set in his first three matches against Marcos Giron, Jason Kubler, and No. 14 seed Diego Schwartzman.

Tiafoe’s serving game was a bit of a hit-or-miss proposition. He only got in 50% of his first serves against Nadal but won 76% of the points on his first serve. Perhaps most impressive of all is that Tiafoe had 18 service aces and just four double faults. He capitalized on five of the eight break-point opportunities, while Nadal only converted on two of the six chances to break Tiafoe.

He has defied the tennis betting odds by being the last American player in the men’s singles field.

Rublev vs Tiafoe Head-to-Head

This is the second consecutive US Open when Tiafoe will meet up with Rublev. In 2021, Tiafoe won 4-6, 6-3, 7-6, 4-6, 6-1 in the third round. More recently, Rublev rolled past Tiafoe 6-3, 6-4 in the Round of 32 at the hard-court event in Indian Wells.

Rublev vs Tiafoe Prediction

After a run to the semifinals in Washington, the results for Rublev on the hard courts weren’t that impressive as he dropped two of his last three matches heading into the US Open. Rublev owns three wins over top-10 ranked players in his previous visits to New York. After two previous trips to the quarterfinals, he is trying to secure a spot in the semifinals for the first time.

Tiafoe was 6-4 during the North American hard-court tournaments leading into the US Open. Three of his losses came in straight sets, so he wasn’t far away from a more memorable summer. He was 0-2 against top-10 ranked players this year before his upset of Nadal.

Now he gets to face a player who has enjoyed success in New York, and he will need to put that win over Nadal in his rear-view mirror for him to move on. The crowd will certainly be pulling for Tiafoe. However, it is hard to ignore the body of work. Tiafoe’s record in 2022 is barely over .500, while Rublev has been winning matches on all surfaces. It would be quite the tale for Tiafoe to take down another top-10 player, but when making the tennis picks, Rublev does look like the smarter choice.
