2022 US Open Quarterfinals – Sinner vs Alcaraz

No. 1 Ranking Within Grasp for Talented Teen Alcaraz

Not only is Carlos Alcaraz going after his first appearance in the Grand Slam singles semifinal, but the 19-year-old Spaniard has a chance to finish the tournament as the No. 1 ranked player in the world.

If Alcaraz, the No. 3 seed, gets to the US Open final and Casper Ruud doesn’t reach the championship match, Alcaraz will ascend to the top spot.

Sinner Struggled en Route to Quarterfinals

It hasn’t been the easiest of roads for Sinner to reach the quarterfinals. He dropped the first set to Daniel Altmaier in the first round and needed to win in five sets to avoid an early exit. He also lost the opening set in a third-round match against Brandon Nakashima.

His toughest tussle came in the Round of 16, as he was on the court for nearly four hours before dispatching Ilya Ivashka in five sets.

Something to consider for those who bet online, it was hardly the best form that Sinner has displayed. He had 14 double faults and got just 46% of his first serves in play. Sinner was putting constant pressure on Ivashka’s serve but converted on just 12 of 26 break point opportunities while having his serve broken eight times.

Sinner will need to play at a higher level in the quarterfinals, or his quest for the US Open title will come to an end.

Alcaraz Overcomes Veteran Cilic

After three routine matches where Alcaraz didn’t drop a set in wins over Sebastian Baez, Federico Coric, and American Jenson Brooksby, things got pretty interesting in the Round of 16.

Facing 2014 US Open men’s singles champion Marin Cilic. The 33-year-old Cilic answered back after Alcaraz won the first and third sets.

Alcaraz overcame 14 service aces from Cilic, and the key to his victory came on the second serves. While Cilic only won 48% of his points on the second serves, with 13 double faults contributing to that number, Alcaraz won 60% of the points when he needed to call upon his second serve.

Alcaraz has nobody to blame but himself for the match going the distance, as he failed to convert on 12 of the 18 break points that Cilic faced. That is a number that those who make tennis predictions will keep in mind heading into this match.

Sinner vs Alcaraz Prediction

There is always a first time. Two of the most talented rising stars in men’s tennis will be squaring off, with one of them moving on to the semifinals in a Grand Slam singles draw for the first time. Alcaraz fell in the quarterfinals in last year’s US Open and the French Open earlier this year.

Sinner reached the quarterfinals at the Australian Open and Wimbledon earlier this year and also got that far at the 2020 French Open.

Alcaraz split his four North American hard-court matches coming into the tournament, while Sinner was 3-2 in the events leading into the US Open.

This has the potential to be one of the more intriguing quarterfinal matchups and the first of many meetings between a pair of players seemingly destined to be celebrating Grand Slam titles in the future.

Both players were pushed to the brink in the Round of 16, so it is hard to pick one player based on their most recent match. Alcaraz is so close to becoming the top-ranked player in the world, and he is our pick to come out victorious in this showdown.
