Norway’s No. 1 Casper Ruud will take on Russia’s Karen Khachanov in the US Open semifinals on Friday.

Ruud Defeats Berrettini
Ruud has coasted under the radar at this year’s US Open, but the Norwegian is in a position to clinch the No. 1 ranking by the end of the week. That’s assuming things fall his way and he reaches the final of the US Open.
Ruud took one step closer to this career landmark by beating Matteo Berrettini in the quarterfinals in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, 7-6 (4).
The fifth seed got off to a fast start and before Berrettini knew what was happening, he was down a set. The Italian perked up in the second and third sets of the match, but Ruud was in the driver’s seat the whole time and never let up.
Ruud played within himself, sticking to what he does best. He served consistently and won 75% of his first serves. He broke on five of 14 opportunities and dismissed seven of nine break opportunities against him.

Khachanov Survives Five-Set Marathon
Russia’s Khachanov survived a topsy-turvy, five-set marathon to defeat tournament favorite Nick Kyrgios, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 6-7 (3) 6-4 win in 3 hours, 39 minutes. It was his second five-set marathon at the US Open after edging Pablo Carreno-Busta in five sets.
Khachanov came out firing at all cylinders and stunned Kyrgios by taking the first set. The Aussie leveled the match by winning the second set, but Khachanov took the initiative again to win the third.
The Russian, who fired 30 aces on the day, came close to taking it in four sets, but he blinked in the fourth-set tiebreaker. With Kyrgios stepping up to serve first in the fifth set, the momentum and advantage went to the Aussie. However, he failed to capitalize and dropped serve, That was all Khachanov needed as he went on to consolidated the break and never looked back

The betting online market is tipped toward Ruud quite rightly. He’s in the midst of a standout season and, potentially, on the brink of becoming the No. 1 player on the ATP at the end of this week.
There’s a lot to like about the unassuming Ruud’s game. He’s wily and agile. He returns well, defends exceptionally and seems to have unlimited gas in the tank. As the firm favorite, he should win this match and make his second Grand Slam final appearance of this year.
Khachanov can’t be dismissed, though. His serve can do a lot of damage, and he has the baseline game to blow past Ruud. However, this is his first-ever Grand Slam semifinal appearance. The occasion alone could be greater than him.
