American Gauff Heavy Favorite to Send Yastremska Packing

At the most recent Grand Slam tournament, American Coco Gauff was projected to reach the semifinals at the Australian Open while perhaps only members of Dayana Yastremska’s inner circle had her among the last four WTA players standing. Now they will be meeting in the third round of the French Open.

The tennis betting odds favor the dynamic 20-year-old Gauff to keep things going against Yastremska, a player who hadn’t won a main draw match at Roland Garros before this year’s tournament.

Gauff is tied for third at +850 in the French Open women’s singles outrights when the tournament got underway. The tennis betting line has Gauff showing up at -700 in her third-round match with Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska at +500.

Gauff Right at Home in Paris?

Coco Gauff’s first Grand Slam singles quarterfinal appearance came at the French Open in 2021. When she returned to Roland Garros in 2022, she made it to her first singles final at a Grand Slam. Gauff did not lose a set until running into Iga Swiatek in the title match.

She had the misfortune of drawing Swiatek again, this time in the quarterfinals in last year’s tournament. Still, she has more Grand Slam singles match wins at the French Open (17) than at any other major tournament. Gauff also reached the doubles final at Roland Garros in 2022 and got to the semifinals in last year’s event.

The tennis betting odds had Gauff as the overwhelming favorite in her matches against Julia Avdeeva and Tamara Zidansek, a pair of qualifiers. Gauff has delivered with a pair of straight-set wins.

Gauff has had mixed results since the Australian Open with a 1-5 record against players ranked in the top 30.

The win came against Qinwen Zheng in the Italian Open quarterfinals. Gauff also reached the semifinals at Indian Wells.

Yastremska Finally Having Some Success at Roland Garros

Roland Garros has not been kind to Yastremska.

She lost in the first round in each of her first four French Open appearances, even though she did extend No. 28 seed Carla Suarez Navarro to three sets in her French Open debut in 2019. Yastremska had to qualify for the main draw in 2023 and she made No. 22 seed Donna Vekic work to close her out in the first round.

It wasn’t easy but Yastremska won in three sets against former Wimbledon and US Open quarterfinalist Ajla Tomljanovic in three sets for her first main-draw win at Roland Garros.

She had a much easier time against Yafan Wang in the second round.

After going 9-15 in her first 15 Grand Slam tournaments, Yastremska is now 6-1 at the Australian Open and French Open.

After qualifying for the Australian Open, she upset Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova, American Emma Navarro and former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka to become the first qualifier since 1999 to eliminate two former Grand Slam singles champions in the same tournament.

Gauff Setting a High Bar

Gauff didn’t hold back when asked about her career ambitions in an interview on the Tennis Channel after her first-round win in Roland Garros.

“I just want to win as many slams as possible,” Gauff said. “Being inspired by Serena Williams, it allowed me to make my dreams as limitless as possible.

“I was taught from a young age to make your dreams as big as possible, even if they don’t feel realistic.”

The 20-year-old Gauff already has a Grand Slam singles title after winning the 2023 US Open and more could be in her future.

Gauff vs Yastremska Head-to-Head History

There is a recent showdown to help those who bet online heading into the upcoming match.

The first matchup between Gauff and Yastremska came in the third round at Madrid in late April, with Gauff winning 6-4, 6-1. Gauff lost just five points on her first serve to overcome eight double faults. The match featured 16 break-point opportunities with Gauff converting six of her 10 break points and Yastremska breaking Gauff three times in six opportunities.

Gauff Tough To Bet Against

Gauff is such an overwhelming favorite with the tennis odds ranging from -700 to -750 for her to win this match that it might make more sense to look at other betting options in the first set. Yastremska is listed at +330 to go up early in this match.

The +370 odds for Gauff to win the first set either 6-2 or 6-3 might be the best way to proceed.
