Evans Upsets Paul

Evans entered Friday’s quarterfinal as the slight underdog to American Tommy Paul, but defied those odds and came out on top in a three-set thriller.

Evans, priced at +135 to win, got off to a slow start. Paul came out swinging for the fences and took the first set 6-1. Everything looked to be going the American’s way until it wasn’t.

Evans regrouped and won the second set 6-3 to force a third and deciding set. The final set was hotly contested right from the start as both players recognized what was at stake. Paul blinked first and that was all Evans needed to finally break through and take the third set 6-4 and the match win with it.

After the match, Evans was visibly chuffed with himself and happy with his rewarding performance.

“When I got ahead, I really took it to Tommy and that’s been sort of my way throughout this week so far, and I went about it in a good way, I was fired up and I thought it was a good battle between me and Tommy.”

Evans’ draw wasn’t a cakewalk. He needed three sets to overcome Filip Krajinovic in the first round. He then upset fifth seed Andrey Rublev in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. In the R32. In the R15, he took out American Taylor Fritz (one of the early betting online favorites) 7-6 (5), 1-6, 6-4.

The British No.2 reaches his second Masters semifinal. He’s also one match win away from competing for his second title of the season.

Carreno-Busta in Fine Form

Carreno-Busta is having a stellar week as he reaches the penultimate round of the Rogers Cup in Montreal at the expense of 20-year-old qualifier Jack Draper.

The rising star from Britain was also having a banner tournament but it all came to a screeching halt against the experienced veteran.

Draper started strong and took Carreno-Busta to a tiebreak in the first set. But the Spaniard persevered 7-4 in the tiebreak. Once he had the first set tucked away, he raised his level and breezed through the second to take the 7-6(4), 6-1 victory.

The 31-year-old Spaniard hasn’t dropped a set through the rounds and he’s been surprisingly stingy with his games. Most importantly, he’s beaten top competition along the way.

He opened his tournament with a straight-set win over No.11 seed Matteo Berrettini, 6-3, 6-2. He then took out up and comer Holger Rune with brutal efficiency, 6-0, 6-3, in the R32 and seventh seed Jannik Sinner 6-2, 6-4 in the R16.

Evans vs Carreno-Busta Head-to-Head

This is the first match between this pair, which is somewhat surprising given that both are in their 30s and have been slogging it on the ATP Tour for yeaers.

Evans vs Carreno-Busta Betting Verdict

Considering this is the first meeting between Evans and Carreno-Busta, it’s a total coin toss.

Carreno Busta is the firm betting favorite at -250 while Evans is a tempting underdog +250. Push comes to shove, Carreno Busta is probably the better tennis pick. He hasn’t dropped a set to date.

If the Spaniard can maintain his top form, serve at a high percentage and keep the intensity high, he should advance into the final at the expense of Evans. The Brit is a fighter, but he might struggle to keep it close.
