No. 10 Serena Williams vs No. 2 Simona Halep

Australian Open WTA Picks

Just three victories away from claiming the 24th major of her legendary career, 10th-seeded Serena Williams is clearly quite hungry. To get where she wants to go, Williams will have to get past second-ranked Simona Halep in the wee hours of their quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday morning.

Can Williams take care of business at the sportsbook betting favorite to take the next step in her quest for No. 24?

Serena Looking Swift

Dare I say it…Serena Williams looked ‘swift’ in her fourth round match. Williams cruised in her first two matches against Laura Siegemund and Nina Stojanovic, but struggled early in her third round match against Anastasia Potapova. Williams was down 5-2 in the opening set before getting her act together to record a 7-6 (2), 6-2 win. She had her hands completely full in her fourth round matchup against No. 22 seed Aryna Sabalenka before taking control in the third set of her 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win on Saturday. The 39-year-old American enters the quarterfinals second to Naomi Osaka in aces (28) and third in first serve points won (79%).

Halep Lurking

The 29-year-old Romanian cruised to an easy victory in her opener but had to go the distance to get past unseeded veteran Ajla Tomljanovic 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 in the second round. Halep then dispatched Veronika Kudermetova 6-1, 6-3 in the third round but had her own hands full in getting past reigning French Open champ, 19-year-old Iga Swiatek 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 on Sunday. The speedy Halep ranks second in break points won and a stellar first in first serve return points won (94).

Head-to-Head

Williams currently owns a 9-3 edge in the head-to-head matchup against Halep. The world No. 2 did win the last meeting 6-2, 6-2 in the 2019 Wimbledon Finals, so she’s got history of beating Williams in a grand slam setting. Unfortunately for Halep, she’s gone 0-5 against Williams on hard courts.

The Pick

I love Simona Halep’s game and never-say-die attitude, but the fact of the matter is that Serena Williams has a huge advantage on hard courts because of her massing serve. More importantly, Williams is clearly as fit as she’s been in ages and looks completely locked-in after getting past the hard-hitting Sabalenka. Simona Halep is too good to go down in straight sets, but I just don’t see her getting past Williams this time around. The legend gets the win in this one even if it does take three sets to get it.

Pick: Serena Williams In Three Sets
