Can Korda Escape Alcaraz in Third Round at French Open?

The more things that change, the more they stay the same. In the 2022 French Open, Carlos Alcaraz faced American Sebastian Korda in the third round. The two players are set to collide in the third round at Roland Garros yet again.

The tennis betting odds favor the third-seeded Alcaraz to eliminate Korda from the French Open for the second time in the last three years.

Alcaraz continues to be the front-runner in the French Open outrights with +225 odds to win the title at Roland Garros for the first time. The tennis betting line has Alcaraz priced at -900 in his third-round match while Korda is at +525 to pull off the upset.

Korda a Chip Off the Old Block

Sebastian Korda will forever be known as the son of former Australian Open men’s singles champion and 1992 French Open finalist Petr Korda.

He made headlines on his own in his first main-draw appearance at Roland Garros. After qualifying for the main draw, he took out fellow American John Isner in four sets in the second round. He reached the fourth round before running into the buzzsaw better known as Rafael Nadal.

Korda hasn’t matched his success at the French Open since as he split his next six matches. One of the wins came against veteran Frenchman Richard Gasquet.

Korda has dropped just one set in his first two matches against Harold Mayot and Soonwoo Kwon.

It is safe to say that the degree of difficulty might go up a bit against Alcaraz with the Las Vegas odds listing Korda as the underdog for the first time in this tournament.

Alcaraz is Ready to Break Through

Novak Djokovic is the top-ranked player in the world while Jannik Sinner won the most recent Grand Slam men’s singles title. However, Alcaraz is listed by the sportsbook odds as the player to beat at the French Open.

Alcaraz has been inching closer to winning it all at Roland Garros. He reached the third round in 2021 as a qualifier. The next year, he was the No. 6 seed and after a scare in the second round, he made it to the quarterfinals before falling in four tough sets to Alexander Zverev.

Alcaraz was drawing plenty of action from those who bet online when he crushed Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2, 6-1, 7-6 to reach the semifinals. An ailing Alcaraz faded badly, winning two games in the final two sets against Novak Djokovic.

After reaching the quarterfinals at the Australian Open, he was looking to take the next step.

Things were looking good when Alcaraz topped top-10 players Zverev, Sinner and Daniil Medvedev to win the Indian Wells title.

However, injuries limited Alcaraz to just one tournament since the start of April.

Alcaraz looks pretty healthy as he has dropped just one set in his first two matches.

Alcaraz Still Rounding Into Form

Alcaraz did what he needed to in order to move onto the third round, but he was not thrilled with his performance in the second round against qualifier Jesper de Jong.

Alcaraz lost his first set of the tournament and at times he was erratic on his usually reliable forehand.

He is still shaking off some of the rust after an injury forced him to pull out of tournaments leading up to the French Open.

Alcaraz admitted that he was probably on the court a little longer than he would have preferred in the second round.

I prefer not to spend too much time on the court, I want to be in good shape for the next round but every match is different,” Alcaraz told the media after the match.

It’s good for me to get the rhythm, but I prefer to spend less hours on the court.”

Korda vs Alcaraz Head-to-Head History

Korda won the first meeting with Alcaraz in Monte Carlo in 2022. After the players split tiebreakers, Korda won 6-3 in the third set.

Alcaraz hasn’t dropped a set to Korda since. He won 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 just over a month later at the French Open, and in the most recent matchup, Alcaraz won 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals of the Wimbledon tune-up tournament in London in 2023. Alcaraz won more points on Korda’s serve than Korda won on his first serve.

Korda has his Work Cut Out

After reaching the quarterfinals at the 2023 Australian Open thanks to a win over No. 7 Daniil Medvedev, Korda failed in his next five Grand Slam events to get past the third round.

It is not looking good for that to change with Alcaraz the heavy favorite.

When looking at the tennis betting line, perhaps the +575 odds for Korda to win the first set might be worth considering.
