American teenager Coco Gauff set up a quarterfinal matchup with Carolina Garcia, who is fast becoming the top favorite to win the US Open title in the eyes of bookmakers.

Gauff Defeats Zhang
Gauff has reached the quarterfinals of the US Open without dropping a set. However, she’s only faced one seeded player up to this point – that was Madison Keys in the R32.
Gauff defeated 33-year-old Shuai Zhang of China in Sunday’s R16, 7-5, 7-5. The match was more competitive than most would have expected it to be or the tennis odds indicated.
Gauff served five aces and 82% of first serves. She won 65% of her first serve points and broke Zhang on five of 11 break point opportunities. Zhang was able to break back on three of nine break points.

Garcia Extends Winning Streak
France’s Garcia is on quite the impressive run of form as she extended her winning streak to 12 matches in a row going back to the Western and Southern Open qualifiers.
Garcia was the surprise Cincinnati champion, becoming the first qualifier to win the title. She carried the momentum to Flushing Meadows where she’s won four straight matches without dropping a set.
More importantly, Garcia has been stingy with games, relinquishing no more than six games in her matches. She’s conceding an average of five games per match.

Gauff vs Garcia Prediction
This is a quality quarterfinal matchup with players that are in good form and filled with confidence. By the same token, it’s a tough one to predict for tennis picks.
As the tennis odds suggest, Gauff is the underdog. But her chances of winning are relatively high. Moreover, Gauff will have the advantage of home support as the crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium is sure to be behind her. She’s one of two Americans still alive in the tournament.
Garcia is arguably enjoying the best form of all the players on the WTA Tour. She deserves to be the favorite as such, if only ever so slightly.
That said, she must accomplish what she’s never done before to reach the semifinals of the US Open; that’s beat Gauff for the first time. It’s also worth noting that Garcia has never reached a grand slam semifinal. Doing so at the US Open would be a career milestone for the 28-year-old.
All told, bettors could do no worse than backing either Gauff or Garcia for the win. Neither would be a surprise semifinalist, as it so happens. For our money, we’re backing Garcia to continue her incredible run of form.
