Linette on a Cinderella Run
Poland’s Magda Linette is enjoying a Cinderella run at the Australian Open as she reaches her first-ever Grand Slam quarterfinal at 30 years of age. Can she keep the fairytale run going?
Next up for Linette is a date with big-serving Czech Karolina Pliskova. A former world No. 1 and Grand Slam finalist who is now, at age 30, in the midst of a mini-comeback after a tough 2022 campaign that was marred with a wrist injury, Pliskova is coasting under the radar.
As per the tennis odds, Pliskova is the favorite at -165 on the moneyline while Linette is the small underdog at +145 in the same market. The games handicap is pegged to a lowly 2½-games line while the total is up to 21½ games with the over juiced to -115 and the under to -105, respectively.

Pliskova, Linette Australian Open Outrights Preview
Pliskova entered the Australian Open as a middleweight priced at -5000. The modest tennis betting outlook was influenced by her disappointing 2022 campaign that saw her struggle to advance deep into tournaments. However, the statuesque Czech appears to be back in top form again as she reaches the final eight of the Australian Open for the second time in her career. As things currently stack up, she is priced as the third-best bet, albeit at a distant +900.
Linette was a quintessential longshot going into the first Grand Slam of the year, priced in quintuple-digit obscurity. She remains a longshot to win it all, though her odds have been trimmed down to +1800.
Pliskova in Form
Pliskova advances into the quarterfinal without dropping a set and, importantly, serving up a couple of bagels.
To begin with, Pliskova opened her campaign against Xiyu Wang, beating the Chinese player 6-1, 6-3. In the Round of 64, Pliskova dismantled Yulia Putinseva 6-0, 7-5 and then in the R32, she dismissed Varvara Gracheva, 6-4, 6-2. Most recently, the Czech defeated Shuai Zhang 6-0, 6-4 in the R16.
Former #1 Karolina Pliskova, now 30yo and completely under the radar in this tournament, improves to 8-0 Shuai Zhang, beating the Chinese 6-0, 6-4 in 55 minutes to reach the QFs at the #AusOpen.

Linette: The Upset Special
Linette opened her campaign against Mayzar Sherif, edging the Egyptian 7-5, 6-1. She then went on to upset No. 15 seed Annet Kontaveit 3-6, 6-3. 6-4 in the R64 and Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-3, 6-4 in the R32.
The Pole saved her biggest upset special for the R16 when she took out one of the top bets to win the tournament, Caroline Garcia. Importantly, she beat the Frenchwoman convincingly 7-6 (3), 6-4.

Pliskova vs Linette Head-to-Head
Pliskova has the 7-2 head-to-head edge over Linette lifetime, a run of form that includes a 5-1 record since 2014. The Czech won the last meeting between them in the first round of the 2022 US Open, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (8).
Linette has two wins over Pliskova on a hard court, but they’re ten years apart. After beating the Czech for the first time in 2012, Linette clinched only her second win last year at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in November, 6-4, 6-1.
Pliskova vs Linette Picks & Prediction
By all accounts, Pliskova is the smart bet to win and advance into the final four. She has experience at this level of a Grand Slam, the better head-to-head edge and renewed confidence in her game.
Of course, one can’t dismiss Linette out of hand. She will be emboldened by her impressive run through the tournament and the recent upset over Garcia. That makes her a dangerous floater that will, at the very least, try to give Pliskova a run for her money, if not pull off the upset entirely.
Thus, the value bet for tennis picks here is the games handicap or the total. Take Linette at +2 ½ (-110) or the Over 21½ (-115).
