This is the ”other” women’s singles quarterfinal set for Wednesday. The showdown between top-ranked Iga Swiatek and American Jessica Pegula will garner most of the attention. However, the matchup between No. 6 Aryna Sabalenka and 22nd-ranked Karolina Pliskova could be a fun one.
Neither player has enjoyed the best year during their tour, but both are a win away from reaching the semifinals at the US Open. It would be the second straight US Open semifinal appearance for Sabalenka.
With the way both players pile up the service aces, this could very well be determined by which player handles the big first serve of their opponent the best.
BetUS sportsbook lists Sabalenka as the favorite at -240, with Pliskova coming in at +200. The total is set at 22 games in what could be an entertaining affair.
According to the tennis odds, the outrights for Sabalenka moved from +700 to +650 and stayed at +1000 for Pliskova after the Round of 16 matches were completed.

Pliskova Outlasts Azarenka
Karolina Pliskova’s title hopes at the US Open nearly ended before they started. She needed to win a third-set tiebreaker 10-8 to dispatch Magda Linette in the first round. She had another three-set match lasting nearly 2½ hours in the third round against Belinda Bencic. Pliskova dropped the first set before roaring back to win 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
Pliskova had to work harder in the Round of 16. Pliskova outlasted former World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka in a match lasting more than three hours.
Pliskova had to win a tiebreaker in the second set after dropping the first one. She saved 11 of 14 break points and won 66% of her points on her first serve. She overcame Azarenka, winning 19 of 29 points at the net.
Pliskova opened a few eyes in New York six years ago and shook up the Tennis betting lines when she eliminated both Venus and Serena Williams en route to the US Open final. Since then, she has reached the quarterfinals three times but has failed to punch a ticket for the semifinals.
Sabalenka Chasing First Grand Slam Singles Title
Sabalenka also had to work overtime to reach the quarterfinals.
American Danielle Collins won the opening set 6-3 in the fourth round match before Sabalenka dropped five games in winning the final two sets.
Sabalenka had eight service aces and took advantage of Collins having more unforced errors than winners in the match.

Sabalenka had to win 10-8 in a second-set tiebreaker before prevailing in three sets in a second-round match against Kaia Kanepi. However, her other two wins came in straight sets.
Something to consider for those who bet online, both of Sabalenka’s Grand Slam doubles titles come on hard courts, as she won the 2019 US Open title and the championship at the 2021 Australian Open. Now she is eyeing her first trip to a Grand Slam singles final.
Pliskova vs Sabalenka Head-to-Head
This will be the first meeting of 2022 between Sabalenka and Pliskova.
Pliskova won both matchups in 2021. She topped Sabalenka 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in an entertaining Wimbledon semifinal. She had a much easier time with a methodical 6-3, 6-4 win in the semifinals of the 2021 Montreal event.
Sabalenka won three-set affairs against Pliskova in 2018 in the Eastbourne quarterfinal and second round at Cincinnati.

Pliskova vs Sabalenka Prediction
Pliskova has bounced back nicely after being eliminated from the French Open and Wimbledon with losses to players outside of the top 100. A run to the semifinals in the National Bank Open in Toronto was what the former top-ranked player in the world needed after a change of coaches and some uneven results.
Pliskova was 0-2 in 2022 against ranked players before defeating three ranked foes in Toronto, including a three-set win over No. 4 Maria Sakkari. Among the top 25 players, she has one of the worst success rates when relying on her second serve, so getting her first serve in play will be the key to her upset bid.
Sabalenka was 5-3 in the three North American hard-court tournaments she played leading into the US Open and lost her only two matches against ranked opponents. She has shown much better form in New York.
Sabalenka reached finals on clay and grass in 2022 and is now looking to do the same on the hard courts. Pliskova and Sabalenka are in the top five on the WTA Tour in service aces in 2022, so expect some big-time serving going on in this match. It is hard to pick against Sabalenka, although this is certainly a match that could take a while.
Pliskova has been on the court for more than nine hours in her first four singles matches, so it will be worth watching to see how much she has left if this match goes three sets.
