Jabeur, Pegula Defy Expectations
To say that Jabuer vs. Pegula is the final many expected or predicted is an understatement. It’s the understatement to end all understatements.
Hardly anyone had No. 8 seed Jabeur or No. 12 seed Pegula on their radar, not least because neither player was dubbed as a top favorite to win the title when markets initially went to press. That was the domain of Simona Halep.
Halep entered the tournament as the player to beat. BetUS sportsbook priced the 30-year-old Romanian at +600. Others that were pegged as legitimate title contenders were Spain’s Paula Badosa and Aryna Sabalenka (both priced at +900). Maria Sakkari rounded out the top four bets at +1200.
Jabeur came into the tournament as the +2000 bet to win the title while Pegula was an afterthought at +4000.

Although both ladies are enjoying a fantastic 2022 campaign, neither has ever won a title as prestigious as the Madrid Open. That fact likely factored in their rather watered-down odds for this event in tennis futures markets.
Jabeur and Pegula each have one title to their credit – both of which were 250-level events. Pegula won her maiden title in Washington in 2019 whilst Jabeur triumphed for the first time in Birmingham last year.
Jabeur vs Pegula Head-to-Head
Ons Jabeur and Jessica Pegula are level 2-2 in their head-to-heads. The 27-year-old Jabeur owns the most recent victories, having beaten Pegula in their last two meetings. She beat her 28-year-old counterpart in straight sets in Dubai earlier this year. She also beat Pegula in three sets at the Chicago 500 tournament last year.
This is the first meeting between his pair on clay. By all accounts, the surface edge goes to Jabeur. However, Pegula has reached a Grand Slam final.
Pegula made her maiden appearance at the 2022 Australian Open final, but lost in straight sets to Ashleigh Barty. That experience will be invaluable. It’s an intangible advantage for the American as she takes her second crack at a prestigious title this year.
Madrid Open Final Preview
Ons Jabeur’s run in the Spanish capital is nothing if not inspired. Jabeur’s path to the final was no picnic, pitting her against some of the top players in the game, including tournament favorite Halep.
Jabeur upset Halep in straight sets in the quarterfinals, beating the Romanian 6-3, 6-2. Prior to that, she defeated Belinda Bencic in three sets, avenging her loss to the Swiss in the Charleston Open final.
Jabeur is 19-7 on the season with a runner-up finish in Charleston. She takes an 11-2 record on clay into Saturday’s championship match.

Jessica Pegula isn’t known for her clay-court prowess, so her appearance in this final is quite surprising. The American heiress has had a standout season, stringing together an 18-9 record to reach the title match.
Pegula fell into an advantageous section of the draw. She had a tough match against Camilla Giorgi in her tournament opener, but since escaping the Italian in a tough three-setter, she’s been in pinpoint form. She took out Kaia Kanepi, Bianca Andreescu, Sara Sorribes Tormo and Jil Tiechmann to reach the final.
Tennis Betting Verdict
As per the tennis betting markets, Jabeur is the favorite to win at -200 while Pegula is the +170 underdog. Jabeur has the recent winning streak over Pegula. Plus, she’s a bit of a clay-court aficionado.
Pegula, though, is a feisty competitor. While she’s the underdog here, tennis bettors should still expect her to give Jabeur a good fight. Heck, it wouldn’t be a shocker if she did pull off the upset either.
