The match belied the score as Gauff was made to work hard for the win. Osaka came out strong in the first set but a break of serve was all it took to decide the set in favor of Gauff.
In the second set, Gauff built a 5-1 lead on the back of a strong serving performance. Osaka made a fist of it and saved four match points to hold to 5-2. She reeled off back-to-back games to draw within a game of the 18-year-old. But Gauff finally served it out at 6-4 to clinch the win.
Gauff served 61% first serves and won 86% of her first serve points. She had 7 aces and enjoyed a five-game winning streak during the match. Overall, she converted on three of 12 break opportunities. However, she was broken the only time she faced break points herself.
Badosa Tested in First Match
Paula Badosa was tested in her tournament opener by American Elizabeth Mandlik, needing to go the distance to clinch the win.
Badosa won the first set 6-2, but dropped the second set 7-5. In the third set, the pair went toe-to-toe before the No.2 seed clinched the win in the tiebreak, 7-6 (5).
The 25-year-old Spanish star had her moments in the match, though credit must be given to Mandlik who made a fist of it in the last two sets.
The Spaniard got 62% of first serves in and won 59% of her first serve points. She had 7 aces and converted on six of 15 break point opportunities. However, she was broken on five of six break opportunities against her.

Gauff vs Badosa Betting Verdict
The tennis betting markets are heavily skewed toward the American teenager. Not only is she projected to win this quarterfinal but she’s also the second-best bet after tournament favorite Ons Jabeur to win.
BetUS odds tip Gauff at -180 to win this quarterfinal and advance into the final four. She’s also priced as the +400 bet to win the title.
Badosa, priced at +160 to win, can’t be overlooked in the betting. She’s a Top 10 player for a reason.
That said, her form has been all over the shop recently and that makes her a risky bet. This is her first quarterfinal appearance since reaching the semis of Stuttgart in April.
