Zverev to Solve Semifinal Curse, Beat Rudd at French Open

The French Open men’s semifinal showdown between Casper Ruud and Alexander Zverev is likely to be overshadowed by the match between Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner and tournament betting favorite Carlos Alcaraz. That is a shame because both Ruud and Zverev have proven themselves over and over again on the red clay at Roland Garros.

Ruud can join Bjorn Borg, Ivan Lendl, Jim Courier, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer as the men’s players during the Open era to reach at least three straight French Open men’s singles finals. Zverev is in his fourth straight French Open semifinal.

Tennis betting odds favor Zverev at -125 to make it to the French Open final for the first time. Ruud is -105 to make it to another championship match at Roland Garros. It is a rematch of last year’s French Open semifinals, won by Rudd in straight sets.

Zverev is third at +450 to win the French Open according to the online tennis odds. Ruud has the longest odds of +550 among the four semifinals.

Ruud Looks for More Semifinal Magic

Ruud has had an interesting Grand Slam singles career. He has made it past the fourth round just four of 22 times when competing in a Grand Slam main draw. He has never lost in the quarterfinals or the semifinals in a major.

Ruud got a win in the quarterfinals without taking the court thanks to a knee injury that forced defending champion Novak Djokovic to pull out of the match with Ruud in what would have been a rematch of the 2023 French Open men’s singles final.

Leading up to that match, it has been a bit of a grind for the No. 7 seed.

Ruud was extended to a fifth set by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second round, and lost the second set to Tomas Martin Echeverry. He followed the same script against American Taylor Fritz in the fourth round.

Ruud had an impressive run to the Monte Carlo final with wins over Hubert Hurkacz, Ugo Humbert and Djokovic before falling to Stefanos Tsitsipas.

He continued his clay-court success by topping Tsitsipas in the Barcelona title match. He also won an ATP 250 event in Geneva on the strength of three top-50 wins.

Zverev Ready to Take the Next Step at Roland Garros

It has been all or nothing for Zverev in this year’s French Open.

Three of his five matches were over in straight sets while Zverev needed five sets to eliminate Tallon Griekspoor and Holger Rune. In both five-set matches, he entered a tiebreaker on the verge of elimination.

Zverev’s run at Roland Garros began with a straight-set win over 14-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal while he won three tight sets against Alex de Minaur in the quarterfinals.

Since beating Pablo Carreno Busta in the 2020 US Open semifinals, Zverev has not made it past the semifinals at a Grand Slam.

He lost to Djokovic in the 2021 US Open semis, fell to Daniil Medvedev in five sets in this year’s Australian Open after winning the first two sets and stumbled in the French Open semifinals in each of the last three years.

“I am happy to be in another semifinal,” Zverev said after his quarterfinal win. “Hopefully I can win one.”

Zverev came into the French Open off a win at the Italian Open, when he lost one set in his six matches.

Zverev-Ruud Match Might Take a While

In their previous four matches, both players have won five sets and 44 games. Zverev has seven more service aces but three additional double faults as well.

Zverev has won a higher percentage of games on his first service while Ruud has been more successful in converting break points.

Zverev is 4-0 in tiebreakers at this year’s French Open and has won 10 of his last 11 tiebreaks.

Ruud is 7-1 in his last eight tiebreakers after winning both tiebreaks at this tournament.

Take a look at the +104 betting line for Ruud to win the first set. The -115 odds for the match to go over 39½ games could be the best way to proceed.

Ruud vs Zverev Head-to-Head History

This will be the fifth career meeting between Ruud and Zverev and three of them have come in Paris.

Zverev topped Ruud 7-5, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the 2021 Paris Masters tournament with Ruud winning 6-3, 6-4, 6-0 in the 2023 French Open semifinals. That evened the series between the two at 2-2 with three of the previous four matches being settled in straight sets.
