MLB Picks Today [September 27th] MLB Predictions & Best Baseball Betting Odds
Kyle Purviance:
It’s a young man Wednesday here at BetUS TV. I’m Kyle Purviance, he’s Corbie Craig, he’s Spreadapedia. We are your Major League Baseball show team for Wednesday, September 27th and I got a little bit of a chuckle, guys, because we’ve kind of made fun of Adam Wayne Wright being Chet Steadman. For those of you who don’t remember who Chet Steadman is, it was Gary Busey as the pitcher in Rookie of the Year. He’s the old guy who only had one game left, he threw his last pitch and that was it, and that’s literally what happened to Adam Wainwright if you read what he said. He said he knew after that last inning that he would never be able to throw a competitive pitch again. It’s a real movie moment. When do we get the Adam Wainwright movie? Lots of stuff in baseball, Corbie. The guy who … it was the first old school card I ever had. It was a Brooks Robinson card. It was my first old baseball card as a little kid. He’s gone. RIP to Brooks Robinson. Terry Francona is retiring.
Spreadapedia:
Does Corbie know who Brooks Robinson is?
Kyle Purviance:
That was my question. Do you even know who Brooks Robinson is, Corbie?
Corbie Craig:
I barely know who Adam Wainwright is. No, I do not.
Kyle Purviance:
Spread, what do you think? You know who Chet Steadman, is, right? You Rookie of the Year.
Spreadapedia:
I do.
Kyle Purviance:
It really is Chet Steadman, right? He’s a modern-day Gary Busey.
Spreadapedia:
You said he threw his last competitive pitch. He stopped throwing competitive pitches several starts before the last win, they just let him keep going for whatever reasons. You mentioned the episode we did after his last win, you said he probably was getting some help, some sticky stuff, some whatever. He knows he … like you said, he threw his last pitch. He left it all out there, but it was not a … he threw a lot of shitty innings to get there. No one’s going to remember that, but that’s what happened.
Kyle Purviance:
I’m just going to remember the movie moment. I feel like he’s going to get his moment in Rookie of the Year. Look, it looks like my rangers are going to go ahead and take the AL West, which I’m absolutely in love with here. I hit, finally, a season-long prop, hit the Twins over 83 and a half yesterday. They got to 84, which is a good thing, but what the hell are we watching for here in the last five, six days of the regular season? Don’t forget, guys, we will be here every day for the playoffs, every single day for the postseason, so don’t forget to hit that like button, hit the subscribe button, head over to BetUSTV.com/join, get in on the action, but what’s the story? What are we watching here in the next five days, Corbie?
Corbie Craig:
Can the Astros clean it up? What is their current standing? I don’t even keep up with standings enough, to be honest, but the Astros obviously an important series. The Rays … though they’re in a decent spot, it looks like they’re crawling into the postseason, so it’s really who can win? Who can beat the Braves, at this point? I don’t think that there are a ton of teams. I think the Braves are pretty much on an island by themselves. The Dodgers … always are worried that Dodgers are going to find a lineup that loses to the Rockies somehow yet still will be a very good playoff contender, but the Braves just seem to be, bar none, number one right now.
Kyle Purviance:
The Braves, I think they’re going … the all-time mark is 307 home runs, they’re at 300, so that’s something to keep an eye on. What are we thinking here? Is there any surprises? Are we going to see any surprises the next five days, Jay? Are the Reds going to sneak into the playoffs? What’s going to happen?
Spreadapedia:
Well, there’s always going to be stuff happening, like last night, the Cubs game, that was pretty shocking. That was disappointing for me. I had the Cubs. That was a fun way to lose that bet and I know a lot of people were probably on the Cubs last night, but down the stretch, you’ve got the Mariners playing the Rangers after today. They got the Astros today and then four games versus the Rangers. The playoffs basically start right now for these AL West. Four-game series, Rangers-Mariners, it’s playoff baseball this weekend. [inaudible 00:05:14]-
Kyle Purviance:
I just need the Rangers to get two of them. Let’s go.
Spreadapedia:
… A lot of teams [inaudible 00:05:17] … Oh, you have Rangers over?
Kyle Purviance:
Rangers to win the AL West. I think their magic number’s two or three. It’s two or three.
Spreadapedia:
I have Mariners under 87 and a half wins. They’re at 85, so I need them to go two and three over the last five games. There’s lots of stuff going on. A couple of the races are settled. I think there’s one scenario where the Padres still get into the playoffs and then there’s the Marlins. The Marlins got screwed yesterday. I don’t know if you guys are aware of-
Kyle Purviance:
[inaudible 00:05:48]Spreadapedia:
… what the implications of this postponement are. Do either of you guys know what’s going on?
Kyle Purviance:
Didn’t even know it happened. I’ve been been traveling around, really not-
Spreadapedia:
They were supposed to play the Mets yesterday and they didn’t. The Mets … the field was unplayable, even though I guess it really didn’t rain or anything, so now they have to play two games today. They got a double-header today, one of them with Braxton Garrett who generally only goes two times through the order, so you’re going to get, maximum, probably six innings out of him on a good day. Then, you’ve got to go game two with an opener. They’re going to have to fill 12 innings today with relief pitching and then, they’ve got four straight games after this. The Marlins’ path to the playoffs is not good.
Kyle Purviance:
That’s difficult.
Spreadapedia:
That’s the thing, there’s all sorts of stuff right now going on with these games. Then, remember, this Wednesday, today, I mean, the Astros-Mariners game coming up today: if the Astros lose, they have to sweep Arizona this weekend and the Mariners just have to split with the Rangers for the Rangers to finish ahead of Seattle. A lot of stuff going on.
Kyle Purviance:
That would be insane if the Astros missed the playoffs, won’t it? It just will. It’ll just be weird if the Astros are not-
Spreadapedia:
They’re giving me that feeling. They just don’t have … they got swept by the Royals. They’re 4-10 in their last 14 games. Sometimes, it just doesn’t work out, and this might be one of those teams.
Kyle Purviance:
I’ll be very disappointed if the Mariners are in and not the Astros, though. I don’t want to watch the Mariners at all.
Corbie Craig:
I’ve got an early show question for a play for you. You talked about the Marlins’ path to the playoffs is really hard. You can bet at BetUS right now, Marlins to make the playoffs, no, +120. They’re still on the line out. Who do the Cubs play in the next few games?
Kyle Purviance:
Let’s pull up [inaudible 00:07:45] … let me look at this here. Let me get these wild card standings up here. Oh, gosh, Marlins only a half game back, it’s [inaudible 00:07:54] …
Spreadapedia:
They need 12 innings out of their bullpen today and then they’ve got to play three more games, no days off. There’s no margin of error for them is what my concern would be.
Kyle Purviance:
It’s interesting. Padres still mathematically alive. They just need a miracle, of course, but crazier things have happened. [inaudible 00:08:18]-
Spreadapedia:
They’re not even listed anymore as to make the playoff, I don’t think.
Kyle Purviance:
… Corbie, are you sad today? Mark Holmes says you look sad and that you need to hang with me to get some action. Is that what’s going on here? Do I need to heal your heart? That’s what I’m here for.
Corbie Craig:
No, [inaudible 00:08:34]-
Kyle Purviance:
Let me remind you guys, if you’ve got a question about a play or you need me to help your marriage or love life, anything you got, get it in the chat box there at the end of the show in the Q and A, we’ll answer as many questions as we possibly can. Are you just mad that I’m back? You were power hungry from being the host and, now that the power’s gone, you’re not as happy? Is that what’s happening here?
Corbie Craig:
… I wasn’t able to play on my computer when I was host, so it was way less fun, but no, I-
Kyle Purviance:
Yes, it is.
Corbie Craig:
… didn’t get my caffeine for the day. I told Mark. I woke up too late, couldn’t take my pre-workout, so half-asleep over here, but we’re making it.
Kyle Purviance:
I love it. Let’s go over the records and get into today’s games. I need those futures to come through and hit so I don’t have just an embarrassingly horrible season. Get that damn thing off the screen. We’re going to get that cleaned up all the way through the playoffs. First game on the docket, 901-902. We’ve got Oviedo and the Pirates at +121, Ranger Suárez and the Phillies at -131, total of eight with some juice to the under at -120. All right, Jay, are we dog hunting today, backing Johan Oviedo, who looked really good in his last start? I’m not a big Ranger Suárez guy. Philly’s already clinched a playoff birth. How motivated will the Phillies be in this one?
Spreadapedia:
We’re fading the Phillies because they’re looking a little bit like you Kyle. They’ve been partying all night after clinching that playoff spot. We don’t know who’s going to be in the lineup but I wouldn’t be surprised if some combination of Harper, Turner and Castellanos are sitting today, and whoever the guys in the lineup are probably going to be a little heavy on their feet, as one might be after a celebration. Give me the dog here. If you want to look at the props, the Oviedo strikeout over is a good place to start. Just things that correlate to sluggish, drunk Phillies today.
Kyle Purviance:
That does feel a lot like me, quite a bit. Scott D says, “Those party all night theories haven’t worked this year.” You know what? I have a theory on that and I’ll tell you [inaudible 00:10:46] … Today … I didn’t really party yesterday, took it nice and easy, a rest day. My buddies and I, we laid around, maybe had a gummy or two and watched … I don’t even want to tell you guys what we were watching all day. I don’t even want to tell you. It rams with Dampire Viaries and I’m very disappointed in myself, but I couldn’t turn it off nonetheless.
Today … it’s because the day after you party, you still have the juice flowing and you maybe have some adrenaline going. It’s that next day. I ended up … it’s a long story but, in Minnesota, I ended up doing pushups on this rooftop bar for this table of ladies next to us and then I had to do the claps in between and there was all these bets going on about how much I would talk to it and everything else. My arms feel like they were shot in the back. I am never doing another pushup again. I’m saying they may be okay today and then worse tomorrow when the hangover really hits them. It’s just one of those things, especially when you start getting older, but what do you think, Corbie? Slight advantage here by my numbers to Oviedo. I agree with Jay here. I think the Pirates are a live dog here. That’s the side I would go. What do you got?
Corbie Craig:
I was looking at Ranger Suárez’s pitching outs, under 17 and a half. It just seems like a nearest ceiling of what I think you would get out of them. Laid off in general. I really don’t like this Pirates lineup. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Phillies come out looking however they want to look and the Pirates can’t score. I just worry about … yes, the Phillies might not really care about this game but, if the Pirates do care, are they good enough to win? I have this number right at market average. I think the Phillies obviously should win the coin flip more often than not, but it’s just you don’t know what you’re getting. Laid off here.
Kyle Purviance:
Jay, what the hell’s going on over there?
Spreadapedia:
What?
Kyle Purviance:
Why are you laughing? What’s happening?
Spreadapedia:
I’m not laughing at anything, I’m just reading the comments as they come in.
Kyle Purviance:
The comments [inaudible 00:12:38] … “Who could do more pushups, Corbie or Basewinner?” Now, that’s interesting. Corbie’s younger and stronger, probably, but Basewinner I think weighs less, so it’s going to be easier for him to get [inaudible 00:12:47]
Corbie Craig:
Listen. Listen, listen, listen, listen, listen, listen …
Kyle Purviance:
Oh, here we go.
Corbie Craig:
Give me any person who wants to bet on this. I’ll make an alternate spread. I’ll take 30 pushups. You can give Basewinner plus 30 and a half, -600 and I’ll take that. That is fine.
Spreadapedia:
+30?
Corbie Craig:
That’s fine.
Kyle Purviance:
I want you to know, I’m a guy who’s done a lot of [inaudible 00:13:07] … I did 10 clapper, push up and clap, on the spot-
Corbie Craig:
That’s fine.
Kyle Purviance:
… after taking, well, multiple, multiple, multiple shots of tequila, so I don’t know if you … I think I’m being underestimated here and I’m absolutely a live dog.
Corbie Craig:
This is fine.
Kyle Purviance:
I could do ten one-arm pushups. Can you do one arm pushups?
Corbie Craig:
Listen … No, I can’t, so we should do it and we should bet on it.
Kyle Purviance:
I could switch arms and go up and down like that. Well, I used to be able to. When I was your age? Absolutely.
Corbie Craig:
You get the bad elbows I think I get [inaudible 00:13:38]
Kyle Purviance:
It hurts so bad today. If I could tell you how bad the back of my arms were … We’ve got some different theories here. We’ve got Corbie -600, Corbie -1,000. Daniel Vincent says, “Money is on Basewinner,” and Damien says, “Basewinner be catching strays on the days off. Poor Basewinner, always taking heat from the young guns when he’s not on.” Oh there’s a lot to decide there. We still haven’t even done our 40-yard dash. Now, we have to do pushups. I need to heal, though. We have to do this next week because my arm … I swear to God, it feels like I have … my calves hurt when I do things.
Corbie Craig:
Spread said he would do pushups. He said that’s his favorite, pushups and flip-flops. He was telling me earlier.
Spreadapedia:
I do them barefoot, but I did not say they were my favorite.
Kyle Purviance:
I think we’re all doing a pushup challenge. We’ll get with the powers that be and get that sorted out but, for purposes of this show, we are locking in the Pirates on the money line for Jay here at +121 and I like that play, as well. I’ll probably be putting some of my money on the Pirates today, as well.
Next game on the docket, and this one’s interesting to me, 917-918. Got Gerrit Cole and the Yankees at +105, Berríos and the Blue Jays at -115, total of seven with juice to the over at minus -115. Corbie, we’re getting Gerrit Cole as a dog. Now, look: again, the psychology comes into this. The Blue Jays … did they clinch the playoff berth yet? I don’t think they’ve quite clinched. They’re close. They’re a game and a half up on the Astros, two games up on the Mariners. I’ve got a futures bet on them as well. If they can get in the playoffs, I have two teams that I get an 8-1 and a 20-1 to win the AL pennant in the Rangers of Blue Jays, which I love, of course assuming both teams get in. They’re playing for a lot more here, but is it weird to me when I see Gerrit Cole as a dog, I want to take the dog money on Gerrit Cole? Tough spot here. What do you got?
Corbie Craig:
I think it makes a lot of sense. It’s crazy to see this year overreaction on Berríos. Last year, we were talking about this guy was getting shelled it seemed like every single game. He still … .260 expected batting average, I still don’t think he’s amazing, but this Toronto lineup has slowly … in the most sneaky of ways, they’re 7-3 last 10. They just passed Houston. I think they have a lot of momentum going their way. I’m not sure I would want to get in Toronto’s way.
That said, Gerrit Cole, obviously a very good pitcher, obnoxiously good pitcher. I wish he wasn’t good. He’s always going to give a team with basically no bats life in this game. That’s why the total’s so low. I don’t think there’s a ton of variance in this game, just due to the fact that I don’t think that the Yankees can score a ton. If you like the Yankees, I think a Toronto team total under would make a lot of sense. Team total under three and a half, I almost bet for Toronto because, if you think the Yankees even win, they’re not scoring five runs. I looked that way, laid off completely. Gerrit Cole’s good, the Yankees suck.
Kyle Purviance:
Jay, I got conflicting numbers. My numbers make it hard to make sense of it. Gerrit Cole, the lowest weighted OPS on the card at .597. He’s been pretty good, 46 of 195, so the Blue Jays projected lineup tonight in 195 plate appearances only hitting .236. Did he just pitch eight shutout innings against this team recently? I think that just happened recently, or am I mistaken here? 58 fantasy points in his last outing, 98 in his last two against Toronto.
Then, I go to Berríos. The projected lineup is 32 for 100, a .320 average. He’s been okay. 62 fantasy points in his last two outings. I think these two just faced off if what I’m looking at is correct, not too long ago. Cole got the better in terms of pitching was better. I don’t know what the hell to do with this one. It almost feels like dog or pass but I think you might … are you taking the psychological advantage of more to play for for the Blue Jays? What do we got?
Spreadapedia:
I was on the fence with the Blue Jays, then limits went up this morning. I saw a lot of money came in on the Blue Jays, enough to move it 10, 12 cents, so that compelled me to reconsider my position and I’m on the Blue Jays here. I think the market is saying that this is the right side today so I’m just siding with the money this morning. Blue Jays is up to -115. -117, even -118’s going to be all right, but it’s Gerrit Cole. Does worry me that’ll keep the scoring down. You never know, he could pitch six, seven, eight innings, finish off his Cy Young season on a high note, but hopefully takes it easy today and the Blue Jays pick up another win in the Wild Card race.
Kyle Purviance:
Bobby Hill says, “Just check the stuff plus numbers. Basewinner edges out Cheeks on the pushup front.” Apparently, according to stuff plus, B-Dub’s getting some … I think I’m beating Basewinner, to be completely honest with you, it’s just whether Corbie can get all that weight up as many times as I can.
Corbie Craig:
[inaudible 00:18:46]Spreadapedia:
I don’t think you’re beating Basewinner, Kyle. I would take Basewinner over you.
Kyle Purviance:
Fair enough. He does work … I guarantee you if he does the pushups I did, his arms don’t hurt like mine do, so that’s a fact. [inaudible 00:18:59]
Spreadapedia:
He would train for it more seriously. I don’t think you are taking into account that aspect.
Kyle Purviance:
No, I’m really not. He would train a lot harder. Corbie trains every day. I haven’t trained in quite some time. It’s just not … here’s my training in the morning, right? Just lifting the beers up to my face. I’m just doing curls, little one-pound curls. Mark Holmes says, “You guys are nuts. Basewinner is a grown, strong man.” We agree. We know. We know that, but we’re just … this is a young man show today, so we’re not giving the old man the credit here.
Spreadapedia:
I’m giving him credit.
Kyle Purviance:
Besides Jay. Jay knows how hard he would work to beat me. I don’t know if I could take that one. I don’t know if I could take that one but nonetheless, for purposes of this show, interesting matchup here. We’re going to lock in the Blue Jays on the money line I believe, right? Blue Jays on the money line for Jay and that’s sitting at -115. Next game on the docket, 919-920. We’ve got Estes and the A’s at +215, Pablo López and the twins at -265. Look, for a total of seven and a half, a little bit of juice to the over at -115 and I like that over a little bit, I thought about that.
Look, for me, Estes … I know there’s not a huge sample size so I’ll need you guys to give me a little bit more information about him, but he didn’t look great in his first start. Pablo López should be fine. A .685 weighted OPS against the A’s. He wasn’t great in his lone start against them earlier this year but he’s been trending upward, pitching well. Twins did it for me by getting to 84 wins. I love that. I don’t believe they have locked up … Have they locked up that division yet? Let me double check that. They have locked up the division, so they are in the playoffs, of course. Wow. Detroit passed Cleveland. How shocking is that, that Detroit has passed-
Corbie Craig:
I sit on-
Kyle Purviance:
… Cleveland in the standings, but what do you think, Corbie? I’m taking the Twins as the first leg of my parlay.
Corbie Craig:
… Twins one, Guardians two, so that is no fun over there, but I would tend to agree. Listen, the Oakland Athletics aren’t very good. I don’t know if y’all know this. I tried to bet a Shea Langeliers prop, but it is juiced today. Let’s see. Looked like -141 for his under runs and RBIs which honestly still isn’t awful but, for the sake of the show, I’m not going to bet it because that’s a lot of juice to lay when you’re down four and a half units on the show. They’re expected to score two runs today, basically. Do I think Shea Langeliers is going to be a key driver of either of those? No. The Twins, plenty fine. Pablo López, plenty fine, just at this point, you’re paying the price. Everyone knows what these teams are, so do you enjoy the price? What did you say you got this price at?
Kyle Purviance:
I took the Twins first five and then of course the Dodgers first five, +112, my Basewinner parlay for the day. I’m just taking them in the first five because … came back to burn me the other day because both of my teams won, but I didn’t win the first five. My Rangers and I can’t remember who else … Rangers/Phillies or Rangers/Padres parlay I think it was. Look, Estes an 1.131 weighted OPS. They left him out there for five innings and he looked like hot garbage. I don’t want to say too much because he’ll probably pitch a no-hitter now but, for me, I’m just going to take the big favorite in the first five, parlay it with another big favorite against a bad pitcher in the first five and get the plus money out of it. What do you think about this one, Jay, Estes versus Pablo López?
Spreadapedia:
Twins already clinched so that’s the only thing that makes me want to stay off them at a big number is it doesn’t really matter. I guess there’s some seeding implications, but are there really? They win the division, so they get a home game either way. I don’t know how you could play the Twins the rest of the season. I don’t know how you could lay such a big number with them. If I really wanted to play this game, I guess I’d take the A’s plus one and a half. As bad as the A’s have been, they do occasionally to frequently cover the run line. They’re one of those teams that plays relatively hard, even though they’re so far out of contention. I guess they have some level of pride, but no play for me on the Twins here. I can’t play the Twins the rest of the regular season.
Kyle Purviance:
48 wins for the A’s. It’s absolutely incredible.
Spreadapedia:
This is basically a spring training game, at this point. How do you differentiate this? There’s nothing on the line for either team, essentially.
Kyle Purviance:
Right. It’s a little nerve-wracking here but I’m taking the plus money here. I’m going to back my Twins, who have been doing it for me lately. There’s a joke here, me rooting for the Twins. We were in Minnesota, 560 CCs and 1,000 … there’s a whole bunch of reasons I’m rooting for the Twins today, so we’re going to be back in the Twins like we were all weekend long. I’m going to take him as the first leg of my Basewinner parlay in the first five innings, then we’ll get to our next game here in just a second.
Next game on the docket to finish out that parlay, 909-910, got Emmet Sheehan and the Dodgers, sorry, I got ahead of the graphic there, at -210, Noah Davis and the Rockies at +180, total of 12. A nice low number of 12 with juice to the over at -115. Jay, look, I know Sheehan has been up and down, but this Noah Davis kid has been really bad. Really, really bad. Second-highest weighted OPS on the card today of .933. Emmet Sheehan, actually a .695 weighted OPS, was pretty solid in his last start against the Rockies here. He has pitched in Coors, I believe, so that’s not something to be concerned about here. I’m going to take the Dodgers in the first five as the second leg of my parlay and that’s going to be at +112, along with the Twins. What do you think here, Rockies-Dodgers?
Spreadapedia:
Like I said yesterday, Dodgers probably going to win at least one of two, and that’s exactly what they did. They won one of two. Again, they’re -210 today for a reason. They should easily win this game. Doesn’t mean they will, but they should. It’s the end of the Rockies’ season and they’re not really going anywhere, doing anything. Haven’t for a while. Probably get a crazy Coors game. I didn’t bet it but, if I do another parlay today with some of the money lines, I’d probably throw that in there with the O’s again, but I don’t have any third, fourth or fifth games yet, so got to work on that.
Kyle Purviance:
Got to work on getting that third, fourth, and fifth. Sounds like my weekend in Minnesota a little bit here. Corbie, what do you think here? Noah Davis, Emmet Sheehan. I like how Sheehan profiles against the Rockies here so I’m going to just take that first five. The Dodgers’ bullpen always concerns me, especially with some of these guys coming out, so that’s why I didn’t really mess around with the full game, although I’m sure it’s fine. I don’t expect the Rockies to win this game. Dodgers should get out to a big lead here but, again, what are the Dodgers playing for? They’re clinched, they’re fine. They’re going to be the two seed in the playoffs. They’re not going to have to worry about any of this weird stuff early on. It looks like everything’s lining up for the Dodgers and the Braves to face off to go to the World Series here, but Noah Davis, real bad. Emmet Sheehan, not so bad. I’ll take the Dodgers here, first five, as the second leg of my parlay. What do you got?
Corbie Craig:
I took the Rockies team total under four and a half, -05. You can get even money at this point. Sheehan, plenty good. I think .183 expected batting average on the year. The Rockies really haven’t seen them, 14 plate appearances, so I’m not too worried about just common knowledge. Also, the biggest thing here for me: first off, really high pressure in Coors, we don’t have to talk about weather but really high pressure, always good for being able to get some spin on your balls.
The main thing here for Sheehan is he’s a four-seam thrower. He doesn’t really care to try to use deception and breaking stuff to get past people, he’s throwing … 61% of pitches have been four-seams at 96 miles an hour. I think that’s plenty fine. It’s not a putaway pitch. He really doesn’t have a putaway pitch. 24% strikeout guy. He’s more getting soft contact with these four-seams and then, he’ll throw an occasional slider. I’m not too worried about being at elevation. I think that this Rockies lineup doesn’t score five runs in very many games in the entire season, especially not versus a pitcher who I think is pretty solid relative to where they’re at and where Mark is giving them. Took the Rockies first five … not first five. Took the Rockies, full game total under four and a half.
Kyle Purviance:
I like that [inaudible 00:27:55] … I don’t see the Rockies scoring a ton of runs, although it can be a bit nerve-wracking in Coors Field but, for purposes of the show, I am locking in the Dodgers first five along with the Twins first five and, again, that pays +112. Corbie’s taking the Rockies, team total under four and a half runs, and that’s sitting at -105.
Last game on the docket, then we’ll get to the Q and A, so get your questions in the chat box. Oh, I thought I had my number on there but I didn’t have the number on there. I thought I did. It’s Rangers and Angels. Sorry I don’t have the rotation number on the top of my head. -150 to Dane Dunning and the Rangers, +135 to Griffin Canning and the Angels, total of eight and a half with some juice to the over at -120. Corbie, what do you got on this one? By my numbers, that’s a slight, slight advantage to the Rangers in the pitching match up here. If you take Dane Dunning, it’s a .705 weighted OPS. For the Angels and Griffin Canning, it’s .744. Seager was hit by a pitch and left the game yesterday. Rangers obviously a ton to play for, the Angels, nothing to play for. What do you got in this one?
Corbie Craig:
We talked about this the other day. I wish these Angels numbers would be bigger, just the assumption that they’ve given up, and we could see the AAA lineups come in and get insane numbers and back the Angels, which sounds no fun. If they were getting crazy numbers, I would like that, but they’re not. This number seems like a pretty normal Rangers versus Angels number with the guys on the mound, so would lean towards the Rangers. I still really don’t understand this line a ton. I guess it’s implying Corey Seager will be out, but I would lean towards the Rangers here. I didn’t play it. It’s just a weird price. It’s in a gray area of I’m not playing, but do lean towards the Rangers here.
Kyle Purviance:
Shout out to my guy, Ed Blust, rotation number 921-922 if you’re looking for this game over at BetUSTV.com/odds, which we encourage you all to do. Jay, what do you think here? Dunning versus Canning. Every game is big for the Rangers right now and no game is big for the Angels as they mire in nothingness out there in Anaheim. What do you got?
Spreadapedia:
I like to point out that teams quit and they have nothing to play for, but there is always the counterpoint to that, that you do have veterans and leaders in a locker room telling the players that you’re not just going to let the Rangers and other team in your division walk into the playoffs, just walk over you into the playoffs, and you do have something to play for. I guess there is that angle but today, it’s enough, even with potentially Seager out of the lineup. I think that the Rangers got to win these games. If they can’t … they’re not going anywhere in the playoffs if they can’t get this ship right. I don’t know. Is this the same team we were talking about several months ago? It doesn’t sound like it to me, at the moment.
Kyle Purviance:
It really doesn’t. They’re making me nervous, but I’m happy they’ve gone on this little run. They’ve got the lead in the division, the Astros have fallen back. This is a game you’ve got to get if you want to be in the playoffs. For purposes of this show, Jay’s taking them. He’s locking them in on the money line here, Rangers -150. Just keep an eye on that Corey Seeger news. That could be something interesting to keep an eye on, too. If they announce some out late, you might get a better number. Maybe if you wait on this, if he’s announced out, you could get five or 10 cents. Something to keep an eye on.
All right, let’s get into the Q and A. Again, I want to thank you guys for watching. We really appreciate you guys. This is the end of the [inaudible 00:31:33] … it’s the dog days of baseball and you guys sticking around here, hanging out with us, hitting that like button, all your questions, we really appreciate it. Don’t forget, top of the hour, college football show, Gary and the guys will be breaking down this weekend’s college football action and then right after that, Fezzik and everyone, Fezzik, Cris and Jared, they’ll be here for the NFL show. That’s at 3:00 Eastern, noon Pacific, so stay tuned right here to BetUS TV for all of that.
Our first question comes from Mike Ferraro. “Was Brooks Robinson better than Cal Ripken as the greatest Oriole of all time?” Now, that’s interesting. No, probably not. It’s close. Brooks Robinson was a fantastic third baseman, one of the original all-time greats. He was a great guy, a pillar in the community of Baltimore, but I don’t know, Jay, that’s tough because Cal Ripken, especially … we talk about it now, guys being hurt all the time, this, that and the third. Cal Ripken played, what was it, 2,000-some … he didn’t miss a game for 20 years. The very first year that I ever played fantasy baseball, which was 1991, Cal Ripken Jr. was the MVP and my first overall pick as a nine-year-old boy, so I have some special love here for Cal Ripken. I would say no, I think the greatest Oriole of all time is Cal Ripken, but what are your thoughts on that?
Spreadapedia:
I think it’s probably an age thing. If you’re a certain age, you’re going to say one thing. If you’re younger, you’re going to say Ripken. I am just going to say, probably for people your and my age, Kyle, it’d be Cal Ripken. For Corbie’s age … do you even know who Cal Ripken is, Corbie?
Corbie Craig:
No.
Kyle Purviance:
Oh my God. Is that real?
Spreadapedia:
See? Some of these things I think I’m being rude asking and then I’m like, “Well, does he actually know?” Cal Ripken … do you know who Chipper Jones is?
Corbie Craig:
Yeah, I know Chipper. He played with the Braves.
Spreadapedia:
Yeah, he played with the [inaudible 00:33:40] … Okay, just making sure. Where’s the cutoff? We’ve got to find out where the cutoff is.
Kyle Purviance:
I can’t believe you don’t know who Cal Ripken is.
Corbie Craig:
Manny Machado, best Oriole ever.
Kyle Purviance:
What about Albert Bell?
Spreadapedia:
See? That’s what I’m saying.
Kyle Purviance:
What about Joey Albert Bell? Do you know who Albert Bell is?
Corbie Craig:
Is that the guy that cut his sleeves off?
Kyle Purviance:
I don’t know.
Corbie Craig:
Who am I talking about?
Kyle Purviance:
Frank Thomas. Do you know who Frank Thomas is?
Corbie Craig:
No.
Kyle Purviance:
Wow.
Corbie Craig:
I think Albert Bell is the-
Kyle Purviance:
Ken Griffey Jr.?
Corbie Craig:
… Of course. I know who Albert Bell is. I was right. He cut his sleeves off when he was with the Indians.
Kyle Purviance:
Mark Holmes says, “Eddie Murray?” No way he knows who Eddie Murray is.
Corbie Craig:
Sounds like a comedian.
Kyle Purviance:
You don’t even know who Eddie Murphy is, probably. Chet McFadden says something great here and, Jay, you’ll remember this, “The greatest Oriole is Billy Ripken because of the F*** Face baseball card,” and he’s right. Remember how valuable that was, too, what was written on the-
Spreadapedia:
[inaudible 00:34:33] dollar baseball card.Kyle Purviance:
… I was so excited when I got it. Now, it’s probably worth 11 cents or something.
Spreadapedia:
[inaudible 00:34:39] a couple bucks for it on eBay if you have one.Kyle Purviance:
I think I got 10 of them somewhere. I don’t know where I got them. That’s great that Corbie doesn’t know who Cal Ripken. That made my day right there. Look up Cal Ripken. He played more consecutive games than any other professional player in any pro sport.
Corbie Craig:
I [inaudible 00:34:57]-
Spreadapedia:
He beat LeGarrette’s record, Corbie.
Kyle Purviance:
He beat [inaudible 00:35:00]-
Corbie Craig:
… I know who all these people are. I’ve heard his name a million times. It’s like saying I know who Wilt Chamberlain is. I know who he is, but was I able to watch him and enjoy in the moment? No. Cal Ripken, I was probably three years old.
Kyle Purviance:
… There’s a whole family affair there. Remember when the dad was the manager and they had Billy and Cal playing there? There’s a whole Ripken affair there in Baltimore. Kev DiBiase, our next question, asked, “Thoughts on the Reds first five?” What do we got going on here? Oh yeah, Abbott and Bieber. Complete stay away for me. Did I freeze? I’m not sure if I freezed. We’re trying to get something … There we go. I love all that. This one’s interesting. .621 weighted OPS here for Andrew Abbott. When you look at Shane Bieber, it’s a .725. Honestly, I think I do prefer the Reds here. The Reds have something to play for. Let me see what this number is. This could be interesting. We could have a red button situation here, but I don’t know-
Corbie Craig:
I’ve got one.
Kyle Purviance:
… just yet. Oh, you’ve got a red button? We can’t have a show and not do the red button for Ed and the guys, they’re going to get upset. If you look at the money line, +110, it says double result. What’s the … the double result is +195? All right, get the red button ready. Get the red button ready because we have a play here. I’m going to back the Reds here. I don’t like the Guardians at all. Bieber I don’t think is going to go deep coming back from injury, nothing to play for, so I’m going to add in that Reds double result at +195. I think they get it done today. What do you think, Jay?
Spreadapedia:
I like the Reds. Elly De La Cruz changed his bat this week, going with a slightly longer bat. Looks like he has some improvements coming. He had two home runs yesterday. First two-home run game of his career. Nice to see him heating up. He was in a slump for a while. They’re going to need him if they’re going to do anything in the playoffs. I don’t know. I don’t have a problem with the Reds today, but I’d play it straight, I wouldn’t do the double result.
Kyle Purviance:
Well, I’m going to bring out the cojones. Scared money don’t make money. I’m trying to make up some units here on the show. What do you think, Corbie? Am I crazy taking the Reds here, double result +195?
Corbie Craig:
Nope. Damian asked a question [inaudible 00:37:21] and I agree with him. I also have a red button in this play. Hit it, Kevin. Give me the red button.
Kyle Purviance:
Ooh, we’ve both got a red button. I love that.
Corbie Craig:
We’re going to go Shane Bieber pitching outs under 17 and a half, +120. Damien pointed out that Bieber came back first game from injury last game. He went 83 pitches, got pulled after the fifth inning. There’s no reason to think that he’s going to try to stretch that out right now. Also, I don’t think his stuff’s very good. He’s a primary fastball thrower, but he doesn’t throw very fast. He doesn’t have a sinker, which we talked about, sinkers really give trouble to the Reds and his stuff doesn’t move a ton, so I’m not too worried about the Reds being made looking a fool. Shane Bieber’s getting soft contact a ton. He’s not really a strikeout pitcher. Give me under 17 and a half pitching outs. I don’t think that he tries to go too far and, if he does, I think it’s a coin flip. Getting +120, I will gladly take that.
Kyle Purviance:
Like I’ve said before, I like the Reds against righties, especially righties who aren’t throwing dominant stuff. They have a lot of good, solid production from the left-hand side do the Reds. If they’re going to blow up, have one of these big games and score a ton of runs, although they did lose a nine-run lead with that abysmal bullpen … or no, that was the Pirates who lost the lead, right? No, it was the Reds who lost the lead. It’s the biggest comeback in Pirates history over the weekend, but I’m going to go ahead and take the Reds here, double result, +195, and Corbie’s going to take the under 17 and a half outs, and that’s at plus money, too. I like that quite a bit, too. That’s under 17 and a half outs, that’s at +120. Again, head over to BetUSTV.com/join and get in on that.
Let’s take our next question from Mike Ferraro. It’s for you, Corbie. “Thoughts on Cole over/under strikeouts at six and a half?” The over is +120 against Toronto. Not a super-high strikeout team but Cole to get the seven Ks … problem is we just talked about it. How long are they going to ride Gerrit Cole in a game that means nothing?
Corbie Craig:
It all comes out of the same idea. I completely agree. Is Gerrit Cole going to play deep enough to get to this? Obviously, he has good enough stuff. Let’s see what his pitching outs is. I would tend to agree. If you think Gerrit Cole’s going to go seven innings, he probably gets there. He’s used to go what, six innings at least, -180, so I think you’re probably on the right side. If you can get plus money on a strikeout prop over, I would agree. It looks like market’s around 110 so, if you’re getting plus money, it’s a pretty good spot too to take Gerrit Cole’s strikeouts over, I would say.
Kyle Purviance:
I don’t hate the plus money. What do you think about that one, Jay? Dicey?
Spreadapedia:
I don’t hate it. The thing with Cole, you said … it’s basically correct he has no incentive to go extra deep in this game. He’s already essentially clinched the AL Cy Young, so really no reason to push anything. It’ll be interesting to see what the Yankees do. I don’t expect him to sit. I don’t expect to come out necessarily after six innings, but I don’t think he’s going to push it three times through the order, necessarily.
Kyle Purviance:
It’s an interesting one. I don’t hate it but again, you’re going to have some lemon booty hoping they keep Cole out there long enough to get to those seven strikeouts. Our next question from Scott D is for you, Jay. “You taking a shot on Patrick Corbin and the Nationals at +230 today against Grayson Rodriguez and the Orioles?”
Spreadapedia:
Definitely not. Patrick Corbin has a time and a place and that time is not right now, when there are plenty of other bets to make.
Kyle Purviance:
What do you think, Corbie, Nats live dogs with Patrick Corbin on the mound against Baltimore? I will say I prefer betting against Baltimore when it’s a lefty on the mound. They scare me more against righties, I don’t know why.
Corbie Craig:
I win a 30-1 season-long player prop parlay if Patrick Corbin doesn’t throw 10 strikeouts today, so I’ll be watching the game and, if he throws 10 strikeouts, by all means it’s how we go out and it’ll be fine, but I can’t imagine that he does. I will be rooting against him, for sure.
Kyle Purviance:
Love that. Let’s see. Bobby Hill says, “We nearly hit a parlay yesterday but Yankees didn’t get it done first five. Can I get thoughts on a three- to four-legger today? Basewinner asked me to ask you,” which I think is funny. I wonder if he really did. Three- to four-leg parlay today. I’ll go Reds, I’ll go Twins and I’ll go Dodgers. What do you think, Jay?
Spreadapedia:
It’d probably be a lot of the big favorites for me. Dodgers, Orioles and Dbacks, how about that?
Kyle Purviance:
There we go. What do you think? What do you think, Corbie?
Corbie Craig:
I actually like the price of this Dbacks game. I haven’t looked into it a ton. 186 … I can’t add another one on the show. I like this Dbacks run line, minus one and a half under … if you can get -115, I think I will probably bet that. I would agree, probably big favorites, but I think this Diamondbacks spot … it basically fits in the same niche we’ve talked about a few times on the show, but this game’s projected nine and a half runs. The Diamondbacks are really big favorites and yet, their ability to win by two or more is not that massive, -115. Relative to the price of the money line, it’s not a bad price by any means.
Kyle Purviance:
I love that. Again, you guys, thank you also so much. We remind you top of the hour, college football show. Right after that, immediately following that, Fezzik, Cris and Jared with the NFL show. Let’s go over our best MLB bets and get you guys out of here on a young man Wednesday. We got a couple live plays. Corbie added Shane Bieber under 17 and a half outs at +120 and that same game. Correlates, there’s some correlation there. I’m taking the Reds double result at +195. Of course, my Basewinner parlay is Twins, Dodgers first five on that parlay at +112. Corbie’s got the Rockies team total under four and a half at -105 and we’ve got the three money lines for Jay today: Pirates +121, Blue Jays -115, I had a brain freeze there, it happens when you get old, and the Rangers at -150.
