College Basketball Picks, Predictions & Best NCAA Basketball Betting Odds [Thursday, Feb 16th]

TJ Reeves:

There and welcome back in to the BetUS College Basketball Show for a Thursday. We are ready to go with a pair of Matts, Matt Josephs and Matty Cox. I am merely the somewhat capable host TJ Reeves. Good to be back with you on the morning after what was some wild action last night. Northwestern probably solidified an at-large birth with a game that they led big and then only to have Indiana roaring back. Matty Cox, I’m just going to say upfront in the words of Chaka Khan from the ’80s, “I feel for you.” I’m not going to sing it, but man, they made a great comeback, Indiana.

I thought we were headed for overtime, but Bowie hit the game-winning shot for Northwestern. You almost had a three-quarter court make by Indiana, maybe, that would’ve won the game too. Wild game. Northwestern wins. We saw some other craziness in different locales like Tennessee beating the number one team of the country, Alabama, as well as some other games. Guys, good to be with you. Matty Cox, first of all, wild action last night. Any thoughts here after that’s over to put Wednesday to bed?

Matty Cox:

No. Yeah, I’m seeing ghosts today. Obviously I talked about the perils of fading the Big 10 home teams and that came back to bite me again. So do as I say, not as I do, I suppose.

TJ Reeves:

Well, but in the case of Indiana, down 21, they did come roaring back in that game. Not good enough to get the cover, but very interesting. Big 10 tournament going to be knock down, drag out. Hello, mid-major Matt. Matt Josephs, thoughts for you off of Wednesday? What stuck out real quick?

Matt Josephs:

A couple of interesting things in the mid-majors. I watched that Grand Canyon UTRGV game last night. The Vaqueros with a very nice road win in that one. And then of course VCU gets the buzzer beater against Rhode Island, but all eyes on Jalen DeLoach and that knee injury. If he’s out the Rams could be done in the A10 or at least be in trouble because he’s such a big piece of their offense and their defense.

TJ Reeves:

Well, and again, some late night games, Washington and Oregon. We did talk about on the show where Oregon came in as what, a five or six point favorite, something like that. Washington got the game into overtime and then won late night last night in a little Wednesday night Pac-12 action. Also, late night last night. I’m looking at what else is there from last evening. Well we had Louisville in Virginia that we discussed on the show too, by the way, just while we recap Wednesday and I promise we’re getting to the Thursday conversation and the Thursday picks. Louisville was getting 16 at home, was winning a lot of that game and Virginia came from behind to beat them. Marquette got the last second, come from behind win in the final minute for their win over Xavier 69 to 68. Also, San Diego State. Did this game have a shot clock and a three point shot? San Diego State, 45 Fresno State 43. Are you kidding me? But that was the final score last night.

Matty Cox:

But that’s what Fresno State does. We talked about that yesterday. Yeah, mid-major Matt mentioned that, they bring it down to the mud. They sucked the life out of them.

TJ Reeves:

Fresno, 18 points for Fresno in the second half at home with a three point shot and a shot clock in a game that they needed maybe for resume purposes. So anyway, there’s a little Wednesday.

Let’s get on to Thursday. Some very interesting games for Thursday. First, let’s take a look at the records on the show, a one in one night for each of the handicappers. You did get Cal State Northridge home, Matty Cox. Kudos on one of your overs Matt Josephs and we see the show still hovering right around the 500 mark, mid-major Matt, is at the 400 mark. Matty Cox trying to gain on it. Let’s begin, shall we? Let’s get into game number one. Handicapping spot number one as a lot of you’re getting revved up and joining the show. Game number one is one in the Atlantic Sun. Let’s talk a little bit about Kennesaw State and the matchup with Liberty tonight. Liberty comes in as a five point favorite. Our total is 135 and a half. Matty Cox leads off the show. What’s the handicap for this game this evening?

Matty Cox:

Yeah, there’s been some late movement here coming out of Liberty. The Flames have been nothing short of magnificent all season. You could argue this is their best team. They’ve had even better than that team that made that Cinderella run knocked down Mississippi State a few years back. I mean this is just a really solid team. It’s team that’s built to put away average to below average teams. That’s why you see the margin of victory balloon so high in conference play so far, but I’m taking the home team. I mentioned how home teams have been awesome in certain conferences this year. ASAD home teams have been as good as any in America. So I’m taking the home team here at Kennesaw, a team that’s got a ton of talent. This nucleus is basically laden with fringe four star recruits, if you can believe that.

But Kennesaw under Mr. Abdu Raheem has really been a talent magnet and now this talent has really grown and blossomed and they’re running away with a 12 and two record right now, 27 on the year. I don’t think they’re that much worse than Liberty and I think the way the home court’s been playing in this conference, coupled with the fact that this team can really shoot the ball. Indiana fans watch Kennesaw come into their building getting a little bit of a scare. They can really knock down shots, I believe that’s how you have to soften up that PAC line defense that Richie McKay deploys a Virginia light model that they use at Liberty there.

So yeah, I think I’m going to take the points here with the home team, a vintage home dog type spot. Again, I think you actually might be able to wait a little longer. This line might keep climbing up to seven, but I wouldn’t think it goes any higher. I think this might be the highest we see this line all day, six and a half, seven.

TJ Reeves:

Interesting that Liberty is one. I believe I have this right, 11 out of 12 or is it 12 out of 13 that they have won. These are the top two teams, Matt Josephs in the conference, both 12 and two. A big regular season showdown and this is one of the conferences where being the top seat will really matter come tournament play because they go to the highest remaining seated teams floor for a semi-final or a championship game. A thought on liberty as the road favorite here at Kennesaw State for a Thursday night, if you have one Matt.

Matt Josephs:

Well obviously Darius McGee, one of my favorite players to watch. He’s just absolutely incredible. Sets a ton of records in everything. Obviously with Liberty the variance is their three point shooting. 50.2% of their shots are from three point land, they’re hitting 36% of them overall. Kennesaw State struggles a little bit defending the three. So it’s really one of those things where if Liberty’s hitting their threes, they could beat almost anybody and if they’re not hitting their threes, Kennesaw could win this game outright. Kennesaw’s been really good at home so far this season, but they haven’t had somebody as good as Liberty come in. So it’ll be interesting to see. Tough test for the Flames. I was interested at five potentially, but getting that many points, I think Matt’s got a nice little find there potentially.

TJ Reeves:

All right, again, the BetUS line has been going up this morning. We make mention of this all the time. For those of you that are new to the show today, we’re here at 11:00 AM Eastern Time, every day. We talk about this all the time. Because of the graphics and the stuff that we’re putting together, we usually lock this stuff in about an hour or so before the show, 90 minutes or an hour before the show. The line’s gone up even since then. So you see Kennesaw State plus five from our graphics folks, but it’s actually now plus six and a half. And Matty Cox says, “If you’re giving me six and a half on the BetUS line, I’m taking the… If I’m taking it at five”, right Matty Cox, “I’m taking six and a half. Give me six and a half with the Kennesaw State Owls at home.” Why not do that?

So that’s the official play and you’ll see that more later on the best NCAAB prop bets as well. All right, let’s continue. We’ll get to your live questions. You see our slate there on the screen. We’ll get to your live questions in a bit. Game number two that we are going to discuss is North Dakota and Oral Roberts in the summer league. Anytime we talk ORU, we’re talking Max Asmus, the fantastic scoring guard for ORU. Look at them laying 19 points tonight, total 156 and a half. Mid-major Matt, you have a play for this evening. I’m curious as to what it is with ORU at home.

Matt Josephs:

So I went back and forth on this one. I got the early over for the game at 155. It’s moved a little bit since then. I still think you could play the game over, but we’re going to isolate Oral Roberts’s offense. You look their ninth and two point percent is 12th and three point percent, 28th in free throw percentage. They’ve scored over 102 of their last three home games and you’ve got a North Dakota team that just doesn’t play any defense. They’re 302 in two point defense, 334 and three point defense. Their last three road games, they gave up not excuse me, their last three of their last four, they gave up 96 at South Dakota State, 91 at North Dakota State, 92 at Western Illinois. North Dakota’s offense has actually been pretty good as of late, so that’s why I like the game over originally. But here we’re going to isolate just the Oral Roberts over. You just have the classic case of a steamroller offense against an awful defense and I think Oral Roberts could touch a hundred once again tonight.

TJ Reeves:

All right, interesting one here it is a large line. Matty Cox, any thoughts Again, Asmus has been fantastic, especially in conference play, familiarity of opponents, they are at home. Any thoughts Matty?

Matty Cox:

Yeah, actually I like new major Matt’s angle on the full game over. So I think North Dakota’s offense is also starting to get cooking here. There actually one three in a row. The team I thought was basically flatlining under Paul Sayer, a guy who I think is on the hot seat there. But yeah, they had some young guys step up, make shots, so I think I might ride with both the Oral Roberts team total. It also took the full game total. Maybe you get a little bit of a lackadaisical defensive effort from Oral Bob’s second half. If they are up big, which I expect them to be. They’ve just been steamrolling through this conference. Again, this team is better or this team is better than that max Asmus team that we saw make that Cinderella run a few years ago. So it’s an absolute lethal team wanting to keep an eye on as it comes down to the stretch here towards March Madness.

TJ Reeves:

Not everybody may catch it, but I catch when you say things like Oral Bob, did you just say Oral Bob on the BetUS College basketball show? I think you did.

Matty Cox:

Absolutely.

TJ Reeves:

I’m looking at Asmus in the recent sample size here to see what he has done as of late. He had 29 in the last time out against Western Illinois and again, he takes a great bulk of their shots. They’re playing at home and mid-major Matt’s not concerned with anything other than points, points, points for Oral Roberts. He says, give me over and that’s a high number, but for the reasons he explained, he says lock him in. Give me over the team total for ORU, 88 in this matchup.

Again, thank you for finding us. Hit that like button. Make sure that you are subscribing to this channel. We’re here every day, weekdays, Monday through Friday, 11:00 AM Eastern time.

We have it ingrained right now. The football’s done. We got the college hoops we’re headed to March. We’ll be here all the way through March all the way through the final four on the BetUS College basketball show and you can help us out by hitting that subscribe button and sharing it out.

Again, another game kind of in the mid-major category, not necessarily the Power six conferences is Jacksonville at Austin P. This is Jacksonville laying two and a half. The Dolphins on the road in conference play here. 125 is our total. Mid-major Matt, we’re right back to you for the official play on this game as well.

Matt Josephs:

So I never like backing a team that’s lost four straight, but I like this Dolphins team now that they’re kind of healthy. Kevion Nolan is arguably one of the best players in the conference. Mike Marsh is one of the better interior guys. He has been in and out of the lineup, only played 15 games so far this season for Jacksonville. So I think I’m getting a solid team who has their weaknesses, but Austin P can’t take advantage of them. Austin P is horrendous. They’re towards the bottom in every offensive category. They’re towards the bottom in a lot of defensive categories. They defend the three, but Jacksonville doesn’t take the three. So that’s not an issue here. And look Austin P’s home, but it hasn’t really mattered. They’ve lost 10 in a row so far.

So I’m taking the money line here. I think the Dolphins are the better team even on the road. Obviously it’s a hesitant play because we’re not exactly getting a Dolphins team in good form. But I watched them go in the VCU and win. I’ve watched them and other road games look really good. So I’ll take the money line with Jacksonville and hope that the good Dolphins show up against the bad Austin P team tonight.

TJ Reeves:

I didn’t realize Austin P had had been struggling that much. They’ve been in the NCAA tournament in recent years, the governors. Matty Cox. Any thoughts if no official play here on this one tonight?

Matty Cox:

Yeah, I’ve been burned by the Dolphins too many times this year. I still think Jordan Mincy is a terrific coach, just the injuries have crippled their season. The fact that they got swept by North Florida, their crosstown rival up there in Jacksonville was really discouraging, then to come back and lose to Stetsin at home then to follow that up with the lawsuit at home to Florida Gulf Coast, both competent teams. But yeah, I still think though I’m with mid-major Matt here, Austin P… This bet is more about a fade of Austin P I think for me it’s why I agree with them. I just think this team’s terrible. Seems like a good get right spot for Jackson even though it is on the road. So I didn’t officially take it myself, but I certainly lean that way.

TJ Reeves:

I know you guys love it when I get a little nostalgic, I’m older than both of you, especially when we can mix in the humor. So Austin P had a very famous scorer in the late seventies without the three point shot, without the shot clock named Fly Williams and the chant was Fly is open…

Matty Cox:

Let’s go pee.

TJ Reeves:

Let’s go pee. Just play on the words there with that. So that’s just going back in the history. I saw the smirk. Matt Josephs, we just point these things out. They got to have some humor right now in Austin P if they’ve lost 10 in a row. Matt says Jacksonville Dolphins on the money line, he will take them for his official play number two on this Thursday show. We’re working along, get some questions, some comments in the live chat. We see some things going across the bottom of the screen as well with your comments or with your questions.

Sometimes when we’re talking about the games, we’ll get to some other games. I know there are some prominent games. Purdue is back in action tonight. An interesting one, another interesting one involving Gonzaga and Loyola Marymount and a rematch. We’ll get to all of those coming up.

Game number four on our list. Let’s get into a little SIU Edwardsville and UT Martin I believe. Did we not talk about one or both of these teams and or this matchup before? Maybe I’m just remembering SIUE but I thought we talked about them against UT Martin before. Anyway, Martin is the short favorite one point at home. The total is 150 and a half in this game. 150 and a half. All right Ma Cox, we’re back to you. A thought and an official play on this matchup tonight.

Matty Cox:

Yeah, we talked SIUEE on the side, one of my many losers this year, not so long ago, but I’m looking at taking the the total here, a rare total for me just feels too obvious looking at the over these teams played on February 2nd, played to 78 possessions an absolute track meet and both teams will pressure full court. UT Martin especially underwriter loves to pressure and SIUE loves to, they basically meet that pace challenge a pace taker, they push themselves but they are a pace taker and you’ve seen them play really, really fast against the fastest teams in the conference.

Southern Indiana played a 77 possessions a few weeks before that. They’re coming off three games they played in the high sixties possession wise, but they still scored very efficiently in two of those three. So I think you get a team that’s starting to score the ball a little better and I think that while their defense is what makes them so stout, I think at a potential where you know kind of have a helter skelter renegade type of game, that typical stingy half court defense is going to be a moot point in this handicap.

So Ken Pump has this at 147, it’s shaded up four points. I just don’t think that’s enough given how fast that last matchup played and that clock total at 164. So I think this plays very similar to what we just saw basically two weeks ago looking at the over here. So yeah, a lot of points pace driven over for me.

TJ Reeves:

Interesting. Mid-major Matt, any thoughts here? SIU Edwardsville, UT Martin.

Matt Josephs:

Well the other thing that kind of helps out here is Parker Stewart didn’t play in that game back on February 2nd and he’s had 18 points the last two games. He’s obviously back for a second tour with UT Martin and so when you can add a guy like that back in and you’re playing at home, I think at least you’re going to get what UT Martin wants in this game, especially offensively. So yeah, I kind of like that play. I’m surprised that it hasn’t gone anywhere but it could be one of those games that’s kind of like below the radar with everything else. But yeah, it’s a really good number considering what happened the first time around.

TJ Reeves:

Matty Cox has got a fan in the live chat. Toby just said, I like this on the over, he likes your spot. Matty Cox wants points, points, points in the SIUE UT Martin game tonight in Martin, Tennessee. That one at eight local time for the matchup this evening.

All right, one more to go here then we’ll get to your live Q and A and we’re going to swing all the way out west to Weber State and Sacramento state. Again, this is a short line Sacramento State laying a point total 126 in this matchup. Matt Josephs, we’re back to you for a third official play on a Thursday. What do we have in this matchup?

Matt Josephs:

So a lot of times I like to play overs where I get somebody who’s going to go at a good pace. This is not one of those games, but I think it’s more about efficiency here.

TJ Reeves:

Big sky there, eight and five coming in on the road. Matty Cox, any thought here on this one if nothing official on Weber State, Sacramento State?

Matty Cox:

Yeah, I like Matt’s angle here on the efficiency play. Sacramento State, they just, Cal McCrae is a seven foot one absolute beast up front. Weber State has no answer for him. I think they can score at will if they put the ball in the post consistently and I think they can flip that around. Can Weber State on the offensive end play a little chess match there? They’re smaller, faster lineup will score against the hornets and I think the hornets dominant post size will score at will. So again, efficiency should drive this over the total. But yeah, you’re obviously not betting on a pace when you’re looking at a team that’s played at 51 possessions, 61, 58, 64, 60 in five of their last six games. That is Sacramento State. So yeah, you’re banking pretty heavily here on efficiency to drive it over, but I think that low pace is also baked into the market. Kepalm has it at 62 possessions. So I like what Matt’s looking at here.

TJ Reeves:

Okay, and I am told live shows we keep saying that we may not have gotten everything we may not have been on for everybody to hear it. Matt Josephs give me 10 seconds again of why you like your play here that we’re about to lock in.

Matt Josephs:

Pace will not be there. Efficiency will be there. Weber State’s defense has struggled on the road. Their offenses start to get a little bit better. It’s going to be slow, but I think that we’re going to get some baskets. We’re going to get to the free throw line and the low total as Matt just said is the reason why I think I like this over.

TJ Reeves:

All right, fair enough. And again, it’s an overplay over 126 in the matchup with Weber State and Sacramento State coming up tonight. And again, we’ve given you five games that aren’t necessarily in the Power six conferences. We’ve given you plenty on those. I think we’re going to be ready to go with some live chat questions again in a couple of moments as we rock along here on the program. We’ll get to the live Q and A in just a second or two.

Again, Perdue is back in action. There’s some fascinating games that are going to be going on here on the program, on the show that we’re going to talk about here in a few moments and a lot of you are getting in questions in the live chat. Again, hit the like button, make sure that you’re subscribed in the live chat. I’m looking at that live audience that is still building and building here as we come your way at 11:00 AM Eastern time.

All right, I believe you’re still seeing us. I believe you’re still hearing us. Let’s get to a couple of questions. Carlin is watching us. Carlin says UCLA Stanford. He’s interested in the spread in that matchup. I’m looking and double checking. You guys may have it before I have it, but I think UCLA by a boatload UCLA by 13 and a half if I see that right. Any thoughts on a side? Matty Cox, any thoughts on UCLA hosting Stanford with the Bruins 12 and two and the PAC 12?

Matty Cox:

Yeah, I haven’t liked Stanford all year, but they’re playing better. They’re coming off a huge win against Arizona at home. They played pretty competitively before that as well. I still leaned over to UCLA, but I think there’s a real case to be made at Stanford maybe finally living up to their talent billing. Again, they have a five star recruit to Harrison Ingram back for his sophomore year. A bunch of solid complimentary pieces. I think Jared Hass is coaching for his life and I argue that they actually could be a sneaky by low the rest of the year, even though I personally have been out on this team since day one.

TJ Reeves:

Matt Josephs, any thought there for the viewer on UCLA, Stanford or you want to move on?

Matt Josephs:

I mean it’s which UCLA offense is going to show up. I mean they were really hot, they were really cold. They’re back home obviously after the Oregon trip so they should be playing better. There’s no look ahead here, but UCLA’s offense right now, too hard to trust. I mean slightly into Stanford. The one thing, as Matt said is Stanford’s coming off a humongous win.

TJ Reeves:

Yep.

Matt Josephs:

Are they going to be fat and happy after that win when they get into UCLA?

TJ Reeves:

PAC 12 took a hit there with Stanford beating Arizona. They take an even bigger hit if they can pull this off with UCLA. This is a different situation though, especially off the wind that should have UCLA on alert. I would agree with that.

Betting with Joe is also watching us, says St. Mary’s and you, university of San Diego, Steve Lavin, San Diego. Not to be confused with UC San Diego that’s now playing division one basketball. So San Diego hosting St. Mary’s. He has a question about the spread in this one. Anything Matt Josephs, anything on this one?

Matt Josephs:

I can’t lay that many points on the road. It’s a lot of points on the road and…

TJ Reeves:

What is it?

Matt Josephs:

Well I was hoping that you would know or…

TJ Reeves:

Let me see if I find it. It’s at least, it’s at least like 12 or 14, right? For St. Mary’s it is actually 13 and a half. 13 and a half.

Matt Josephs:

So the only thing I think of here is you could look at St. Mary’s as team total. I mean this is almost a mirror image of the Portland game where you’re playing a team on the road that plays no defense and they scored 81 in 60 possessions on Portland. San Diego plays no defense. They’re even worse defensively than Portland is, so maybe a St. Mary’s team total over here. Something to isolate them because they’re going to do their part. It’s just whether or not San Diego’s going to do theirs.

TJ Reeves:

Matty Cox, any quick thought on that for the viewer?

Matty Cox:

I can’t believe this spread’s what it is, but San Diego has been absolutely terrible defensively. God, I almost think just with the talent that San Diego has, you already, there’s a little bit of a money line value just to sprinkle a few bucks on it, but God, I don’t know. St. Mary’s, I think they completely carve San Diego to shreds personally just like they did in that first meeting. They won by 27, so no fluke there.

TJ Reeves:

Okay, while we’re here, TJ will insert Loyola Marymount rematch with Gonzaga that is up at eight Pacific time in LA at the Gersten Pavilion. Loyola Marymount already has the win over St. Mary’s a week ago and obviously they beat Gonzaga at Gonzaga. Gonzaga still favored. I’m seeing by eight on the BetUS line. Very interesting. Any thoughts guys? If no official play on the revenge game for Gonzaga as the road team, Matt Josephs anything there?

Matt Josephs:

I would’ve figured that a lot of people would be on Loyola Marymount considering that they won in the kennel and all you’ve heard was, oh, the kennel streak against teams that are not St. Mary’s and BYU ended with that loss, but people are believing in Gonzaga. The things you look at from that first game, Loyola killed them on the boards. That’s something that probably won’t change and Loyola had 16 turnovers to Gonzaga’s eight. I’m surprised that all this money’s coming in on the Zags, so I would potentially look at Loyola maybe wait, see if you can get a little bit more. I don’t think it’s going to go much higher, but I didn’t think it would go higher to start.

TJ Reeves:

Matty Cox, I believe I have this correct Gonzaga’s last seven games as the true road team, one in six ATS for whatever it’s worth, and that line is eight or eight and a half. Any thought on Zags rematch with revenge on their mind at LMU?

Matty Cox:

Yeah, that’s why I’m not betting LMU, but I kind of agree with and major Matt, I’d argue there’s a little bit of value here at plus eight. A key guy just came back for LMU, Rick Espanza not a big marquee household name by any means, but he’s a big body up front. You’re going to need him against the Zag size. He did not play in those two blowout losses that the lions suffered before he returned. That’s when they beat St. Mary’s at home in overtime and then nearly beat Santa Clara on the road. Another very impressive effort against a well-coached team. So yeah, I think the lions are all labeled legit with just their talent propping out, they’re fully healthy and they actually have some interior resistance to neutralize what the Zags do best and let’s punish you inside.

TJ Reeves:

Good on all of that. Let’s move on back to more viewer questions. Mark is asking about Ohio State and Iowa, Ohio State laboring. The wheels have fallen off, leaking oil. What else can we say? Metaphorically Iowa laying seven and a half at home. Thoughts Matty Cox? Thought I know you watch and handicap a bunch of big 10.

Matty Cox:

Well what do we say about the big 10? You bet the home teams of the road teams. What’s our pillar here and…

TJ Reeves:

You better go home. You better go home team. Right?

Matty Cox:

And when the white team has a lame duck coach that is already hearing whispers about his job security, it’s a young freshman latent team that I think has hit a wall. It’s a big number. I get the reluctance to lay a touchdown with Iowa here, but I think I would. I think this is a blowout or runaway, maybe a first half to kind of shorten the price a little bit, prevent some sort of backdoor nonsense in the second half. But I think Iowa is the think simple, right side here.

TJ Reeves:

Matt Josephs any thought including Holtman, is Chris Holtman in dire situation here and maybe going to get fired?

Matt Josephs:

I mean I see I was was surprised to see the total went down two points because Iowa at home, I mean they just score a ton of points. Their defense isn’t good enough. I think Sensiball has a good game for Ohio State. I kind of like the over, I was surprised it went down instead of up when it came out.

TJ Reeves:

All right, we’ll keep rocking here. A yes no Holtman in real trouble here. Can he survive? What do we think?

Matty Cox:

I don’t think he does, but it’s unfortunate. I think he’s a great coach. Someone will pick up a gem, but I also believe that maybe both sides need a change of scenery so it could be a good mutual departure on both ends.

TJ Reeves:

Huge expectations at Ohio State and they are not good in what is a tough Big 10, but they have not been good.

All right, let’s see. Ninja 13 watching gets in again. Wichita State Temple, Ninja’s interested in the over 136 and a half thoughts, Matt Josephs, anything?

Matt Josephs:

I took Wichita State plus five when it opened up. That was half me being the fatalistic Temple fan, but also I think Wichita State’s defense will frustrate the Owls and plus playing Temple at home, they have their home court advantage. You’ve already seen them lose to Maryland Eastern Shore at home, you’ve seen them lose to Wagner at home. They’re capable of playing really well and if their offense comes out they could crush Wichita State because Wichita State’s offense is bad, but I just usually go with the road team in the Temple games because they’re just such a tough team to figure out.

TJ Reeves:

Matty Cox, anything here on that American game or you want to move on?

Matty Cox:

A quick personnel note that helps the over, I don’t have the updated status on Jaleel White, but I believe he’s been out the last few games. He actually might be out for the year. I might have my notes confused here. He’s a big defensive piece so I think they struggle to defend at the level that they have been beating Temple with him out.

TJ Reeves:

Temple coming off a second straight loss, Matt Josephs to my Memphis Tigers as they try to bounce back tonight with Wichita State. Let’s stay in the American Conference. T Gate if I have it right, is interested in the total. Houston’s favored by a boatload against SMU. He’s interested in the total in that one. 138 and a half in the American conference. Thoughts Matty Cox, thought?

Matty Cox:

Total? I have no thoughts. First game Houston won by I think 28. The game played to 66 possessions. That’s exactly what Kampon has it priced at today. I think the number’s about pretty sharp, so no read on the total for me there,

TJ Reeves:

Matt Josephs anything on that one?

Matt Josephs:

First I thought you were referring to yourself in third person. I was going to ask about the Memphis game there with the T gates, but you were talking about somebody else. I usually…

TJ Reeves:

No, I was talking about somebody else.

Matt Josephs:

I usually don’t play a lot of Houston totals. Their offense is going to carry a lot. If you like the over here, I’d almost take the Houston team total over because they’re going to do a lot of the heavy lifting anyway. You’re not going to get much from SMU. So if you like the over, why not just take the Houston team total over instead.

TJ Reeves:

Houston and SMU tonight. Houston obviously leaving the conference for the big 12 Memphis UCF tonight. That’s revenge for Memphis. They lost in double overtime to UCF earlier this year. Memphis Houston, Sunday afternoon, kind of a standalone Sunday afternoon game in Houston will be big for the Tigers in their at-large resume. Let’s see what happens.

TJ question while we’re here. Matt Josephs, you’re going to love me for this. Radford and UNC Asheville in the big South tonight, seven eastern time. These are the top two teams in the conference. They’re both 12 and two or one, maybe 12 and two, one may be 11 and three. They’ve both won 10 of their last 11 games. The game is at Radford for Asheville and Radford. Matt Josephs, anything on that one with the line around five, five and a half for Radford?

Matt Josephs:

Well, Drew Pember should be able to do whatever he wants. Shaq Jewels didn’t play in that game for Radford. He is not obviously as tall as Pember, but at least he’s a center type body to throw at him. I like Radford, I like this Radford team a lot. They’re really good usually at home outside that Gardner web loss that they had at home. But I think Asheville’s got what it takes to potentially win this game on the road. I certainly think they could cover this spread. Nobody can perfectly cover Pember for UNC Asheville and if he’s hitting shots then maybe they double. That opens things up for other people in this game.

TJ Reeves:

Matty Cox, any thought on a game, a battle in the big south between two of the top teams, they play a tournament on a neutral floor in Charlotte and I actually just found out, got confirmation that I will work that championship game on Sunday, March 5th for tune in and national coverage. So I’m going to be very interested in Asheville and Radford, the two top teams in the conference playing each other tonight. Any thought or do you want to move on?

Matty Cox:

Yeah, I think two teams with a legit chance to compete in the opening round of the tournament. I think these teams are that good. Radford’s the better team, Asheville has the better player in this matchup. I’m going with the more complete team in a revenge spot after your Asheville got them on the road, sorry, at home to start off the conference season. So I’m looking to back Darius Nichols, former West Virginia standout and his boys in the Highlanders. I think they get this done tonight.

TJ Reeves:

All right, I’m looking over some more of the live questions while we have a moment or two here before we are done. We’re here weekdays at 11:00 AM. We love shooting through all of the live questions. William Ball is asking any thoughts on Arizona State? I’m looking for that matchup and looking for that line tonight. Any thoughts on ASU guys?

Matty Cox:

My sec. Oh, go ahead, Matt.

Matt Josephs:

I had the Arizona State money line before when it was around three-ish, two and a half-ish because I like Arizona State. Well actually no, I don’t like Arizona State. I think Bobby Hurley’s a terrible coach, but that’s besides the point. Warren Washington is returning tonight for Arizona State. I think that’s pretty big. Colorado’s been a train wreck on the road that. Their only road win, I think they have one road win in conference, so basically Arizona State desperate to play their way into the tournament. I’m going to play on that desperation and hope Bobby Hurley stays out of the way. So I kind of lean towards the home team, but the line keeps going up now.

Matty Cox:

Yeah, it’s at minus four. I almost took this as my best pet personally on this show. So I like Arizona State a lot here. Even at the number at minus four. Colorado is sort of a teetering house of cards, especially outside of the elevation at Boulder. I think they’re just a different team and yeah, Warren Washington is the complete, he’s a game changer at the rim for the Sun Devils. They’ve missed him so he’s going to be a huge piece tonight.

TJ Reeves:

This game is a PAC 12 network game. It is a six local time game in Tempe eight Eastern Time. Arizona State is favorite and they had a big performance, speaking of Stanford, they ended up beating Stanford in come from behind fashion last weekend. And again, they’re trying to make a push to get into the NCAA tournament if they can out in the PAC 12.

Anything else here? Let me look on the live fan questions here. If I have anything for tonight, anything else? Somebody’s asking about Purdue and Maryland. That one is up with Purdue off the loss to Northwestern. What about Maryland hosting Purdue and Maryland? Interesting is what the short underdog I believe in this one at seven Eastern time in College Park. Purdue favored by one. Thoughts real quick guys? Matty Cox?

Matty Cox:

Who’s at home?

TJ Reeves:

Maryland.

Matty Cox:

Maryland. I pick Maryland. Look at their home road splits. Just a microcosm of so many teams in this league. I don’t mean to be a broken record, but…

TJ Reeves:

I got you.

Matty Cox:

It’s been a winning strategy all year. I mean the numbers, they speak for themselves. Yeah, is it a good spot for Purdue? Maybe trying to get right? Sure. But I think Round actually poses some matchup problems. And again, they are at home and that’s all that matters in this league this year.

TJ Reeves:

Matt Josephs, if Maryland wins this, this would now be three recent losses for Purdue. Are they on the verge of costing themselves a number one seed shortly here?

Matt Josephs:

Probably. I think that I agree. I mean it’s the same thing the few times I’ve dipped into the Big 10 Home teams and pass. That’s about it. So yeah, I would lean to Maryland here. It should be a fun atmosphere, that’s for sure. And you look at that last game, Zach Edie did everything and nobody else helped him out and Maryland nearly won at Purdue, so I like them with the venue change here.

TJ Reeves:

Couple of people are asking about UAB and it’s UAB UTP, right with UAB as the road favorite against UTEP. I see a couple people asking about that. Let’s see. Chosen 1T Max is asking about that. UAB laying six and a half in El Paso. Any quick thought?

Matty Cox:

Yeah, UAB is a different team right now with Jelly Walker back, but UTEP took him to double OT first meeting. I actually like the minors here at Home.

TJ Reeves:

Spot is an interesting one, Matt Josephs for UAB.

Matt Josephs:

Yeah, I would lean to UTAP. I did get a DM from our resident UAB fan Corby who said take UAB, but I don’t know if I can believe him on that. I mean, look, the one thing that concerns me about UTEP and the reason why they probably didn’t win that game at UAB is because they can’t hit free throws. They went 14 to 25, they’re shooting 60% from the free throw line, so it’s good you’re getting points here with them at home. But man, a close game, they may miss free throws and that might hurt the spread here.

TJ Reeves:

If we listen to Corby Craig on take UAB on any day ending and why we would already be in some trouble because they have lost six times. Corby Craig, if you’re watching us in conference USA play, this is at UTEP. This is a seven Mountain Time. A lot of people don’t realize that UTEP is Mountain Time in El Paso. Seven Mountain Time, nine Eastern Time game tonight in Conference USA action.

All right, we’ve given you a bunch all over the board here for a Thursday. Let’s go back and take a look at the best bets off the lineup you see on the show. We’ve got five official plays on the show. I won’t go over all of them. You see mid-major Matt does have a team total and a game total. In Matty Cox’s case he has a side and he has an over as well and we have updated that side. Kennesaw State is getting six and a half on the BetUS line, so he is going to go ahead and take those points, points, points with that.

All right guys, anything else in closing? Anything we didn’t mention a game or something tonight that you’re also interested in that we didn’t mention here? Matt Josephs, anything,

Matt Josephs:

Nothing against you, but I wonder if Memphis has one eye towards this weekend. UCF might be interesting if they can keep rebounding and keep up a little bit with the Tigers, especially if they’re not focused.

TJ Reeves:

Let’s see, because again, this is one of those games like what the Temple game was like, what the USF game was last week. It doesn’t really help your at-large case, but it can damage you if they lose to them again. They lost a two-lane in a sweep. If they lose to UCF in a sweep, it could be a problem for Memphis. And again, that game is enormous with Houston. I mean an argument can be made. They get Houston in the last regular season game at home at the end of the year. If they win both of those games, I mean don’t be greedy, but if Memphis wins both of them, it doesn’t matter what else really happens between now and then that will vault them up enough probably to put them in the NCA tournament. We’ll see. Matty Cox final thought here. Anything that we didn’t cover or anything else for a Thursday before we’re done?

Matty Cox:

Yeah, my eyes will be on my Owls, another bubbleishous team. They’re on the road. Middle Tennessee’s a tough place to go in and play, but that’s one word. If they lose, that will hurt them. But it can’t really help them. I Feel bad for these mid-majors in these tough conferences, namely Charleston, but especially Florida Atlantic where everyone, you just kind of hold where you’re at in the seed line on the projected bracket. Any loss though, you could fall back one or two spots easily so I hope my owls keep it going.

TJ Reeves:

Do you think that FAU has done enough at the moment where they would be an at-large team even if they don’t get the automatic bid?

Matty Cox:

Yep.

TJ Reeves:

Or are you saying they could still damage themselves over the last week or two here where they’re not an at-large team?

Matty Cox:

I think they’re about an eight or nine seed right now. I think one loss they can withstand, two, it’s going to get dicey and it depends who those losses come to, but that’s kind of where I view as their scenario right now.

TJ Reeves:

Florida Atlantic 14 and one in conference USA. They’re the road team getting four or four and a half at Middle Tennessee tonight. By unofficial count, that was about 27 games that we just talked about on the show. Boys. Great stuff. Matt, Josephs, Matty Cox. Thank you. Good luck with your plays on a Thursday night.
