College Basketball Picks, Predictions & Best NCAA Basketball Betting Odds [Thursday, Mar 9th]

Speaker 1:

We are ready to go for a Thursday on the BetUS College Basketball Show. It is championship week. It is good to be back here on the program after the first day that I’ve missed the entire season. The streak is over. I’m the somewhat capable host TJ Reeves. You see Kyle Hunter is our handicapper here today. Mucho thanks to Gary Seagers for filling in the air chair yesterday on the program with the two mats. He did a great job, always in good hands with Gary. As I was traveling back from Indianapolis to my home in West Central Florida. After watching northern Kentucky Kyle Hunter get into the NCAA tournament on the automatic bid, winning the Horizon League title, call that game on national radio. Had a little travel day. Now we’re back in the pocket. Now we are ready to go.

Kyle it is your first time with us this week on championship week. I know everybody is pumped. They’re excited. There are games that are already underway, bevy of games that are early. We are going to talk about a bunch. We’re going to sit here for a little while while this goes along. Kyle, how you feeling on the Thursday of championship week, my friend?

Speaker 2:

Good. I mean how can you not love this time of the year, if you’re a college basketball fan? You’ve got games from 11:00 AM until like 1:00, 2:00 AM tonight. It’s going to be a long day of college basketball.

Speaker 1:

I think the Arizona State game got over with about 20 minutes ago. Montana State punched the ticket in the big sky. I think that was at breakfast this morning Eastern T. Yes, it does go on and we love it so. Again, thank you for finding us. A couple of housekeeping things. We are here live right now, 11:00 AM Eastern Time. Typically, we’re here Monday through Friday, 11:00 AM Eastern Time. Tomorrow, Friday, tomorrow an hour earlier, 10:00 AM Eastern Time. We can’t wait to do the show on Friday. Kyle and I will be with you along with Corby Craig 10:00 AM Eastern Time for the Friday edition of the show. Kyle Hunter, we will also be coming with a Saturday show for Championship Saturday automatic bids going out in the ACC, the Big East, the Big 12, the PAC 12 and on and on. I’m probably leaving a few out, with all of that going on Saturday show. Peeps, pay attention Savages Saturday show 11:00 AM Eastern Time right here on Bet US TV’s platforms on YouTube on Twitch through Twitter, live Saturday show. Get the questions, get ready for the handicapping on Saturday.

Kyle, we are now within 96 hours of knowing the bracket. I cannot wait for this, Sunday night just like everybody else by the millions. We are almost there, my friend as we’re about to get this underway for a Thursday.

Speaker 2:

Oh man. Selection Sunday, TJ, I’m, I’m kind of like a kid on Christmas. I love selection Sunday. I get fired up every single year. Here we go.

Speaker 1:

No doubt. We see that hat or the North Carolina Tar Heel’s going to be part of it. We’re going to talk about them for the next couple days. We’re going to talk about Michigan. Wisconsin took a loss last night in the Big 10 Tournament. Did that cost them? How much did it cost them in the Big 10 Tournament and all across the landscape, whether it’s the SEC where teams like Mississippi State and Missouri are trying to figure out are they in? Whether you go out west is Arizona State in? We’re going to talk about their game with USC on. Are my Memphis Tigers in or not? We will find out Sunday night. All right. Time to get going.

First, let’s take a look at the records two and two day on the show for the handicaps. Gary weighed in also with a Mountain west underdog that did not come through, but still a two and two day for the handicaps keeps the record right above 500. You see Kyle above 500 for the year as well. I know we’ve got a ton of people already jumping in here in the live audience. Jump in, get some questions ready. We’ve got a big slate of games. Kyle is doing some handicapping. I’ll be weighing in. Kyle Hunter, you ready brother? You ready to do this? Here we go, for Thursday of championship week. Let’s get after it.

Let’s start with game number one. This is an afternoon game in the ACC tournament. It is in Greensboro, North Carolina. Pit a winner on Wednesday afternoon over Georgia Tech now gets a matchup with the Duke Blue Devils on the neutral floor. Duke playing its first game of the tournament is laying six. The total is 138.5. Kyle, let’s begin the discussion. A thought or two. This is one of the things that we’re going to talk about several times for today probably a team in Pitt that played in the arena and won a game, versus a team in Duke that hasn’t played in the arena yet. That’s one of the subplots. Give me that and some more on this game please.

Speaker 2:

Yeah. TJ, that’s an interesting handicap. What do you do about a game like that? A lot of people like to take first half on the team that played the day before against the team that didn’t play. Usually, the team that didn’t play is the better team obviously because they had the buy. I think Pitt really shot the ball so well last night. I can’t believe last night I can’t believe they scored 89 points against the Georgia Tech defense that tries to slow the game down. Pretty decent defense. I’m really surprised at the line move on the total in this one, TJ. I think 142 opening down to 138.5, that’s a pretty big line move. You know I’m an unders guy in general, especially in conference tournaments because we have seen unders do well in conference tournaments in the past. The over has done great in recent weeks, but the last couple of days the under has come in pretty nicely.

I think this total’s getting a little bit too low here at 138.5. We saw these two teams play in the regular season, get to 146 with a tempo of 71, which is more the preferred pace of Pitt than it is Duke. Now, Duke won that game 77-69. There was a decent amount of fouling in that game. As far as the side in this one, I think this is a tricky side because like you said, Duke minus six, they started at minus four. TJ, you know it’s kind of weird to see a team go from minus four up to minus six at the same time the total’s come down three and a half points. I think it’s tough to lay that many points in a situation like that. I’m going to pass on the side. I’m going to lean to the over in this one thinking 138.5 has gotten a bit too low here.

Speaker 1:

Blue Devils have won six straight. When last we saw them, they defeated their arch rival North Carolina for the sweep in the Dean Dome. Again, Kyle Filipowski, NBA type talent is a big man can put it on the floor. Roach, experienced guard. They’ve got Lively that can make some plays. They’re they’re good at blocking shots. This will be fascinating coming up this afternoon as the winner will advance to the semi-finals of the ACC tournament in Greensboro. No official play here on a Pitt team taking on Duke. Pitt, again a win over Georgia Tech they had to battle just real quick, Kyle. Georgia Tech made a comeback that was a fairly close game in the final couple of minutes so they had to scratch and claw a little bit, Pitt, to be able to get into this quarter-final game for a Thursday afternoon. Pitt though 14 and six in the ACC. Looks like they’re in safely at large. Still a very good game, an interesting game. Any more thought on Pitt and Jeff Capel’s team before we move off this game and move on here on the Thursday show?

Speaker 2:

I think Pitt’s kind of reinvented themselves this year. They’ve been a really good defensive team that couldn’t score. This year, they’ve been very good on offense. Nelly Cummings has helped them a lot, the transfer in. I think this is a Pitt team that is a bit too inconsistent to have a deep run in March, but I do think it’s a team that probably is in the tournament now. It’s going to be interesting, TJ, to see how the ACC does because a lot of those analytical sites really hate the ACC. I think they might even be a little bit underrated at this point. People have bashed them so much.

Speaker 1:

All right, interesting. Pitt has won eight of its last 11 games. They had lost games to Notre Dame and Miami to close the regular season. Lost in Miami on Saturday night but did beat Georgia Tech on Wednesday. All right. There’s a lot of good discussion if no official play on Duke and Pitt coming up this afternoon. Let’s move on on the Bet US show here for a Thursday talking some college basketball championship week, Cal Baptist and Sam Houston. They are doing battle in the WAC tournament in Las Vegas. Keep me straight here, Kyle. This is an afternoon game in the WAC. Sam Houston on the neutral floor is favored by 5.5. 124.5 is our total. You have an official play on this second game on our slate. What is it, Kyle Hunter?

Speaker 2:

Yeah. This is a three o’clock tip time here Eastern. Early start time out in Vegas. This is a Cal Baptist team that already won one game here in the WAC tournament. This is Sam Houston State’s first game and the tournament. Now, I think in this one it’s easy to say, man, this is a really low total. It certainly is a low total, 124.5, but I think it’s very justified. Look at Sam Houston State, the Bearcat’s defense, what they’ve been giving up consistently. I’ll just read over the last few games what they’ve given up, 56, 59, 45 against Cal Baptist, 57, 59 in overtime against Stephen F. Austin and 54 against Abilene Christian. The first game between these two teams was 56-45 with a tempo of 59 possessions. A very slow-paced game. I think this is a good under here in this one. I’m going to take under 124.5.

My thinking here is that neither of these two teams are very good offensively. Neither, team is really adept at getting second chances. I think it’s going to be one shot and done for the most part. Very good defense from both teams, especially from the three point line. So I don’t think we’ll see too many threes fall on a game like this. Obviously, you never know what happens in a one game sample size, but the data looks like there shouldn’t be a lot of threes in this one and the neutral site obviously helps and under. Long term those neutral site unders have done well. 124.5 is low, but my numbers are lower than this. I’m going to trust my numbers here and take an early game under the total in this one.

Speaker 1:

Interesting that Cal Baptist did win the opening game on Wednesday, beating Abilene Christian on this floor. Here we go again with a team that played a game in the arena and won against a team in Sam Houston State that hasn’t played a game in the arena yet. The first of four in this one and the winner will get the winner of Grand Canyon and Seattle in a Friday semi-final in the WAC neutral floor in Las Vegas. Let’s lock in Kyle Hunter. The first official play is an under in this game for Thursday afternoon. He says, “Give me under the total of 124.5 for Cal Baptist and Sam Houston State in that WAC matchup.”

Again, thank you for finding us. The live audience, growing and growing Kyle, as we knew it would. We are here weekdays. Again, I stipulate. Hit that like button. Make sure that you’re subscribed. We keep soaring in live audience, keep subscribing. I want to get to 5,000 subscribers by the time we get the bracket out and we get to March games next week for the NCA tournament. We only do that with your help. Share it out as well.

We keep making mention that tomorrow’s show will be 10:00 AM Eastern Time, an hour earlier than normal. Adjust your time zone accordingly. Live show 10:00 AM Eastern Time tomorrow. You can obviously watch it at the regular time, but in terms of Q&A and the live chat, get in here at 10:00 AM. Also Saturday show as well. Saturday 11:00 AM Eastern Time we are back here on Bet Us and the platforms. We will get to your questions as you see on our schedule.

Let’s move on with a matchup in the Big 12 Tournament between West Virginia and Kansas. This on the quasi neutral floor, Kyle Hunter of Kansas City, although the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City is only about 30 minutes from the Lawrence Kansas campus. Kansas playing West Virginia, laying four and a half as the top seed in the quarter-final, the Big 12 Tournament total 148.5. We do have breaking news on the Thursday morning that Bill Self is ill. The university has announced in a statement he will not coach the game today. He is under treatment in the Kansas University Hospital with doctors there .no word on how long term, Kyle, this is, but Norm Roberts the assistant will coach Kansas in the game today. How much does that matter? How much does that factor in? West Virginia’s had a couple of wins late in the year. Neutral floor. Kyle, some thoughts here on this matchup on a Thursday afternoon, Kansas and West Virginia.

Speaker 2:

Yeah. TJ, I want to start by saying, you mentioned to me right before we went live here that Bill Self wasn’t going to be coaching this game. I kind of went down a long path of looking to see what was wrong with Bill Self. I see there’s all kinds of rumors. Hopefully Bill Self’s doing all right. Hopefully it’s nothing serious as some of the rumors have, but he will miss this game. Who knows how long he’ll be out, but certainly best wishes to him to get better.

This is a matchup where Kansas actually started as a minus three favorite. It’s gone up some. I think it really says a lot that Kansas starts at minus three. They’re likely the number one seed, maybe even the number one overall seed against a West Virginia team who’s 19 and 13 and on a neutral they were only favored by three, now four and a half. Says a lot about the Big 12, how deep it is. I think West Virginia is probably a much better team than most people would think when you just see the record. Huggins always gets his team to play very hard. Effort is not going to be an issue for West Virginia.

This is a game where I think, having said all that with what’s going on with Kansas, with how West Virginia has been playing, of late I think this will be a close game. I would be inclined to take the points at plus four and a half on West Virginia. Kansas has less incentive to have to win here. Now, they have been very good in this big 12 tournament, so I don’t want to say that they’re going to lose this game because they’ve made a mockery out of people for doing that year after year. I do think this will be a close game. West Virginia team, that should get some second chances. They should get to the line a lot. They’re seventh in the nation in free throw rates. I think West Virginia gets the line quite a bit.

How this game is called matters quite a bit because a lot of games with West Virginia and them have a lot of fouls. We’ll see how this game is called. West Virginia, certainly very aggressive defensively. Also, on offense, taking the ball to the basket. Lean to an over here. Again. I can’t believe I keep saying over on several of these, TJ but I’m going to lean to the over again on this one thinking the tempo will be relatively quick. Both teams pretty efficient on offense as well. My leans on this one would be West Virginia and Kansas over the total. Then West Virginia’s side would be my lean as well. I also think that this is the type of game that could turn into a foul fest late. It could also be an overtime type game late, because both teams are liable to be in the bonus early and then I think this will be a tight game.

Speaker 1:

Again, the total 148.5 on the Bet US line right now. Couple of things of interest, these teams played twice in the regular season. Kansas won in January in Morgantown, fairly decisively in that game. I’m looking for the final again. They won by 14, 76-62. They won by only a deuce recently. West Virginia made a great late comeback late in the year in Lawrence, Kansas hung on won the game by two. We go back to the whole thing about beating a team three times in the same season. Any thought on any bearing on that from West Virginia having lost twice to Kansas already, Kyle, real quick.

Speaker 2:

It’s an overused thing. Some people say you can’t beat a team three times. If you’re a lot better than that team then you can certainly beat the team three times. If you’re close, you’re similar teams, I think it can’t be difficult. Kansas is certainly the better team, nobody’s denying that, but West Virginia has made a habit of playing tight games even in their losses here of late like you mentioned, they nearly beat Kansas on the road in that game. Kansas playing well certainly, but West Virginia is playing much better than they were earlier this season. I like the form they’re in coming into this game.

Speaker 1:

All right. Norm Roberts, I do know this as well, has been a head coach before he left the Kansas program as the lead assistant for Bill Self was the coach at St. John’s for several years in the 2010s. Didn’t have a lot of success but he’s been a head coach before, so he will be coaching this game today. How long that goes on is up for conjecture right now. Again, if you’re just joining us for the comment, Bill Self not coaching this game health related as we’re live here on a Thursday. Not believed to be serious. The university’s saying he’s doing well, he’s under doctor’s care at the Kansas Medical Center. Let’s see how long he’s out. Let’s see what happens in this game. As the winner of this one, let me just look at the bracket one more time before we move on off the game, will play the winner of Baylor and Iowa State in a semi-final on Friday night. That’s Kansas and West Virginia for a Thursday afternoon matchup.

Let’s continue along here on the program. Let’s go to the Big East. Let’s go to Madison Square Garden where last night DePaul upset one of the darlings. A lot of people, Kyle Hunter, thought that Seton Hall might be an upstart team in this tournament to do some damage. DePaul into that real quick on Wednesday night with a one point win. Knocked them out now. DePaul playing Xavier coming here on Thursday in the quarter-final round of the Big East tournament. Xavier obviously having to buy. Here we go again. A team that played Wednesday against a team that’s been resting and ready to play. Xavier big favorite laying 12 total, 152.5. Kyle Hunter, you have an official play on this game, for the peeps, for the Savages. What is that play? What do we like?

Speaker 2:

I’ll tell you what, I’m going to start here by giving an angle. I know some of the peeps there in the chat, like these angles. I’m going to give out one that I think is really helpful. This game’s at Madison Square Garden. TJ, I think I’ve said this to you before. I’ve never seen a game at Madison Square Garden. I’m going to have to change that at some point because they’re kind of the mecca of basketball there at Madison Square Garden. This is a great under venue for college basketball. It’s a big arena. Tough shooting backdrop. I’m going to give you a stat here that I think is really something else, two.

First, the first half. At Madison Square Garden in the last 300 games, the first half is 59 point a half percent to the under. Almost 60% under over a 300 game sample size. Very big angle there taking the first half. In the post season at Madison Square Garden, if you have a total of 136 or higher, obviously this game does the under is 27 and 12, winning by an average of seven points. A really good margin there. The under has been great. All three of the games went under the total yesterday. That Seton Hall, DePaul game was a wild finish, TJ. What a crazy finish. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a game where it was a goaltending call reversed, right as the thing was at the buzzer. Crazy to say this.

Speaker 1:

What did you think? I thought that it was the right call to reverse it. I did not think it was goaltending. Did you agree with it? It breaks Seton Halls hearts and it may cost them the NCA tournament at large, but I thought it was the right reversal.

Speaker 2:

It was definitely the right reversal, yeah. I think it was okay that they called it to start with just to be able to review it but that was definitely …

Speaker 1:

Can I just stop? I know what you’re saying. What are we doing in 2023 where we can review it if we call goaltending but because we didn’t call it and we didn’t stop play by calling it we can’t review it. Well, I mean to me you’ve got to be able to call it both ways. If you didn’t call it, but maybe it’s obvious to everybody that the ball did hit the board for example, and then the defender blocks it, how we can we not review … I’m not asking you to answer this. I’m asking rhetorically. How can we not review that in 2020? What is wrong with the instant replay system? We got to have that fixed, because if it had been the other way around where that’s the winning shot and it’s a block and they don’t call the goaltend, there’s no mechanism to review it. That’s the point, because they called it, they could go look at it. I’m off my soapbox. Finish up on this and make your official play, please.

Speaker 2:

Hey, I’m with you on this one, TJ. I totally agree. I think that’s crazy that it’s 2023 and we can’t do that. I assume that’ll get changed at some point, but it’s overdue at this point here. I’m going to take DePaul team total under in this game. DePaul was 10 for 20 from the three point line yesterday. This is not a good shooting team in DePaul. Again, like I said, MSG notorious for bad shooting numbers. Also, Kadary Richmond, for Seton Hall, missed that game yesterday. Probably their most important player. DePaul, nice win. I don’t think DePaul’s going to be around for too much longer.

DePaul 68 points in that last game against Xavier. The first game they had 73 points. This is a game where the total is 70 and a half and it’s played at Madison Square Garden. This is win or go home. Usually, their game slows down a bit in a game like that. I think we see a little bit slower tempo. I think the defense tightens up and it’s a big shooting backdrop that’s been difficult. I’m going to take DePaul team total under for this game.

Speaker 1:

Okay. Again, you mentioned DePaul did upset Xavier 73-72 earlier in the year, the revenge game won by Xavier by 14 at home. [inaudible 00:21:58] and Xavier put it on DePaul. Again, DePaul playing a game last night. We will find out. We will see. Let’s lock Kyle in. He is under the DePaul team total of 70 and a half for this matchup that is upcoming.

Again, we are here for you on all fronts. The live audience is growing and growing. Keep hitting that like button. Keep subscribing as we rock along. All right. I’m going to break format for just one second, because there’s no way we’re getting to the Davidson VCU game, Kyle, on our official slate before it begins. A couple of peeps have already asked about it in the chat. That game is beginning, as we are live at 11:30 AM Eastern Time in Washington DC. Virginia Commonwealth is the top seed in the tournament. They are favored by seven and a half total that I think I’m seeing on the Bet US line is 133.5. It’s not on our slate. It’s not the next game on our slate, but just give me a quick opinion on VCU Davidson. Do you have a lean because it’s about to start in about five minutes as we’re live. If anybody’s trying to punch in their bet, do you have any kind of a lean there for that game? Just real quick?

Speaker 2:

Yeah. I’d lean toward taking the points in that game. I think Davidson’s a pretty well coached team. McKillop obviously Matt there now instead of Bob, but I think it’s a solid team. The last game they played too, Foster Loyer didn’t play. Foster Loyer, the best player for Davidson and they lost by two at home without their best player playing. I think they can stay in this game. VCU is a good team. I’m not sure they’re a team that should be laying a bunch of points against at least a decent team. Total of 133.5 or 1 34 in this one. I think seven and a half is quite a few points. My lean would be grabbing the points, but that would be a small lean. I don’t think it’s a game that I’d be too excited to bet.

Speaker 1:

I’m just double checking. They only played once, played twice. Excuse me. VCU won both games. Here we go again with they won both the matchups. Can Davidson overcome that? No, my apologies. Davidson won the second game, buy four for what it’s worth. They split. That game was recently, in the last couple of weeks. Here we go with VCU and Davidson on the neutral floor. Kyle gave you a couple of thoughts and a lean on that one. Don’t say we’re not here for you, peeps and savages. You got the quick squeeze in there before that game gets played. Let’s continue with our schedule and our slate.

You saw Kyle’s hat, you’ve seen at the whole show, North Carolina and Virginia up in the ACC tournament tonight in Greensboro. North Carolina off the easy win over Boston College. These same two teams played about two weeks ago in North Carolina, one at home. Now, it’s the neutral floor. Virginia favored by two, total 129. All right. Let’s begin the discussion like this. North Carolina may be in any way, it’s French. I believe if they beat Virginia and complete a double whammy of beating them twice late in the year, this is going to put North Carolina in the tournament at large. I believe that. Thoughts on this game here; Virginia has taken a couple of losses late in the year, including to Boston College, a bad loss. Any thought, Kyle Hunter, on this neutral floor matchup tonight?

Speaker 2:

My theory on Virginia is Virginia kind of played their best basketball at the beginning of the season, ending the season not really playing very well. In fact, [inaudible 00:25:20] has a momentum number and they’re 353rd out of 363 teams. They’re not coming into this game playing very well. North Carolina, they’re a bit of a tough handicap. I mean, let’s be honest, it depends on Caleb Love, is he making his shots. Quite a few times this year he really hasn’t been making his shots. I still think North Carolina’s the side that I would bet in this game because North Carolina has a lot to play for in a game like this. To be fair, like TJ said, they might be in anyways. People might think I’m a North Carolina fan for wearing the hat. I’m not necessarily a North Carolina fan. I do like Davis. I think he’s a good coach, a easy coach to root for.

Let’s just say this, let’s be honest, if North Carolina’s kind of on the bubble versus some other teams, they’re probably going to get in because they’re a really good draw. That’s not me hating on North Carolina at all. It’s just being honest about the situation. I think North Carolina in this game can win the battle on the boards. I think they come into this game playing better than has Virginia and they have so much to play for here. If Virginia loses, they’re still in the tournament, no problem. North Carolina, they may wonder be on the bubble here. I like taking North Carolina in this one. If I’m taking a side. As far as the total, I have to touch on this one too, TJ.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, sure. Go ahead.

Speaker 2:

A battle in the pace. North Carolina wants to run. Virginia wants to stall, obviously. I like these pace war games. They’re fun, because you see who wins out when it comes to pace. The last game they played against each other, the pace was pretty slow, I believe. Well, it was 67 possessions, which is not terribly fast, but for Virginia, that’s rapid fire. That’s really fast. North Carolina was able to get them moving a decent amount. In the first game, Virginia won 65-58, 63 possessions in that game. It does matter who’s controlling the pace here. It’s a tough total to bet. It’s awfully low. I would probably lean to the over, but just saying I lean to the over on a Virginia game makes me feel super uncomfortable.

Speaker 1:

Queasy. Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Really, really uncomfortable.

Speaker 1:

I hear you on that. Again, a couple of things here that are of note. If North Carolina were to lose this game and not make the NCA tournament, it would be the first time that the AP preseason number one doesn’t make the field since 1975. If that happens. However, to your point, brand names matter. Just like two years ago, it’s a subjective process. If these teams are close, it’s a committee of people that want to vote. It’s a billion dollar TV product. Two years ago they put Michigan State and UCLA in the first four. UCLA emerged out of the first four, the whole tournament was being played basically in greater Indianapolis, but they took the brand names two years ago and had them playing each other, Michigan State and UCLA.

Kids, they’re going to take a North Carolina or a Michigan if it’s close and they can justify putting them in. This will put, I believe, North Carolina squarely in if they can win this Virginia game tonight. Let’s see what happens. Here again, North Carolina played a game and won it easily with Boston College. Virginia’s been sitting and waiting. Let’s see what happens in Greensboro. It’ll be a Carolina crowd. They will have eight, 10,000 or more in the arena for anything they do.

All right. Couple of more games left here. We rock on the live show. Hit that like button. Hit subscribe. We’re getting to your Q&A in a few moments. Let’s go back to the Big 12 for another evenly matched game with TCU and Kansas State. TCU, a two point favorite on the neutral floor in Kansas City. The total is 147.5. This one coming here on Thursday night for a slot in the semi-finals. Kyle Hunter, a thought or two here.

Speaker 2:

Yeah. This game is a very, very difficult handicap. I’m going to try my best to handicap this one, but I’m going to say, TJ, I went down a rabbit hole for the second time looking at this game. Eddie Lampkin not going to play here for TCU. I saw he stepped away from the team and now I’m reading alleged abuse by the coach, verbal abuse. Not a great situation. This is a key player for this team. He is down there in the paint getting a ton of boards, really good player, Eddie Lampkin. Verbal abuse steps away from the team. That’s not a great situation to go into. I like TCU as a team. They do need Lampkin down there. TCU, as a team, I thought would have some value from a future standpoint. But when you say I’m stepping away from the team, verbal abuse, I’m wondering if you’re even coming back, let alone not playing for this game. I don’t know that TCU has the same upside that they would’ve had.

This one, Tang has done such a great job with Kansas State. Kansas State’s pushed the tempo more than anybody else in the Big 12. This is a team that has played different than most of the other teams in the Big 12. This is a Kansas State team that nobody could have dreamed would be 23 and eight on the season. I mean, they’ve been fantastic. One of the biggest surprises in college basketball. When these two played in the regular season, 82-68 win for TCU at TCU, 82-61 win for Kansas State. Neither game was particularly close. Tough handicap, TJ. I have to say, of all the games that we’re talking about today, I think this is the game that I’d like to bet the least. Any lead on this one? I guess Kansas State based on the situation that TCU comes into here.

Speaker 1:

Again, for these two, I’m just looking at their most recent matchups here. They played last in Manhattan and Kansas State blew them out, 82-61. I’m looking for the earlier matchup in Fort Worth, that was a TCU win by 14. Mike Miles is a big key for TCU as the guard, along with Keyontae Johnson, who’s the great story. The kid that had obviously the collapse and the cardiac arrest at Florida. He obviously got much better, took more than a year off from the game, transferred to Kansas State. Keyontae Johnson, arguably comeback player of the year situation nationally, 18 points per game.

All right. Neutral floor. This is the last game on the court of the four games Thursday night late, somewhere around 9:30 Eastern Time in this matchup, split in the regular season. Somebody was asking, philosophically, just give me a handicapping opinion. When the line is this low on a neutral floor like minus two, minus one and a half, are you just better to play the money line for the better value? Because basically at a point and a half or two, you’re just looking for the win. Philosophically, what is your thought on that short one and a half or two point favorite versus the money line, neutral floor college tournament games?

Speaker 2:

You know TJ, I don’t like paying that extra juice to pay for the money line. I mean, you’re paying minus 125, minus 130. It’s hard enough to win 55% of your NCAAB bets to start with. I think when you start laying that much juice and you have to have the breakeven, not 52.38% anymore, it’s quite a bit higher. I know it feels better to have the money line because you’re going to lose some of those games, by the hook, but I think long term it’s dangerous to be laying that kind of juice. No, I don’t really like to do that.

Speaker 1:

All right. Good enough. Thank you for the opinion there. Again, the TCU, Kansas State winner gets the winner of Texas and Oklahoma State in the semi-finals on Friday night, Big 12 Tournament. One more game to go. Then the live Q&A. Let’s swing all the way out west to Las Vegas again in the PAC 12 tournament where Arizona State won late night with Oregon State to set up another matchup with USC here. USC has beaten Arizona State both times that they have played them in the regular season. On the neutral floor, Trojans favored by three, total 139. Kyle Hunter, a couple of thoughts here on this matchup in the PAC 12 tournament late night tonight.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I don’t trust Arizona State very much. I know they’re right on the bubble. They have a lot to play for in a game like this, but Hurley’s team has not played well down the stretch consistently. ATS wise, he’s been a bad coach at the end of the season in general. Andy Enfield’s a good coach for sure. In March, he’s been money against the spread. I think this is a good spot here for USC. If you’re betting anything, I think Arizona State has a lot to play for, but they haven’t been consistent enough. I’ll be honest, TJ, I’m a night al who watches these late night games. I got to set the alarm a little bit earlier for tomorrow’s show, for sure. I might need a little extra caffeine for tomorrow morning show.

I will tell you, TJ, this game was horribly ugly between Oregon State, right and Arizona State last night. I mean Oregon State not playing very well at all, yet still only lost by six points and covered pretty easily. I don’t like the Arizona State team’s offense. It seems like way too much one-on-one offense. I think that USC has too many options to beat them. Boogie Ellis, how he’s playing makes a big difference. He’s shooting almost 40% from three point range. I know you know him well. Drew Peterson’s a good player for USC as well. USC’s defense in the paint is very good. They have some really good shot blockers. Just allow 42.6% from two point range, which is third best in the country. I would bet USC here, if I was betting this game.

Speaker 1:

Again, these two teams just played in the regular season finale back on the weekend in Los Angeles, USC beating Arizona State behind 28 from Boogie Ellis, the former Memphis Tiger, that’s what Kyle was referring to, who’s now at USC. Now, it’s a matchup in Las Vegas that is the last game of the night. That’s what Kyle was referring to. Somewhere around 11:45 Eastern, 8:45, local time, late night for this one in the PAC 12 tournament. Again, USC sweeping Arizona State. For what it’s worth, can they beat them three times and move on to the semi-finals?

Kyle, just a quick thought here, as all of this evolves, Arizona State very much needs this. They have a couple of quality out of conference wins, but against the best teams in the conference. They did hit the half court shot to win at Arizona, but they lost the other five games to Arizona, both to UCLA, both to USC. If they lose again, I don’t know everything they’re talking about in the committee’s room, I’m talking about in Indianapolis, but if they lose again here to USC, there’s a strong argument from the committee that, hey, you’re not in that strong of a conference and against the best three teams Arizona State will now be what? One in six if USC beats them tonight. That’s not a compelling argument. Just one more thought on that, on how much Arizona State needs this game on the neutral floor.

Speaker 2:

Yeah. I think Arizona State’s out if they lose this game, would be my guess. You also have a couple really bad losses in the profile. Texas Southern, probably a quad four loss I would assume there. San Francisco, they lost by 37 points at San Francisco. I remember that game a little bit, TJ. I think we spoke about that one. What happened in that game? They had the 25 point win over Michigan and then lose to San Francisco by 37 points. I don’t think this is a bad team, but they’re 65th in Ken Pom rankings. I’m sure they’re not too high in the net either. I think they really need this game.

Speaker 1:

All right. A lot of people are talking about how this is kind of a middling situation here for USC. How much do they care? They’re likely already in with the work that they’ve done. We’ll find out. Again, it’s on the neutral floor in Vegas. ASU needs it tonight. There you go with some discussion on that. We have given you a bunch. As long as Kyle is good, we’ll sit here for a few more minutes, Kyle and take some Q&A from some of the peeps here about some of the other games. It’s literally like 70, seven zero games today. It’s incredible how many there are today and tomorrow. We won’t get to all of them, but we’ll get to a bunch of them right now. Watch what happens besides the ones that we have already talked about here on the show. Let’s get into it.

How about Mark watching us? Hello, mark. He says, “Rutgers and Michigan neutral floor in Chicago.” Both of these teams need this game. I’m going to say to you, Kyle Hunter with Michigan laying three, if Michigan beats Rutgers, I believe they’re in the tournament. I think they have enough, where they still don’t need to go all the way through, let’s say, to the championship game. They have done enough, I believe at this point. Would it have helped them to finish off the Indiana game? They were winning Sunday at Indiana? That would’ve put them over the top, I think. Rutgers is right there as a contender to maybe be an at-large team. If Michigan beats them, they’ve got two or three quality wins. They swept Northwestern in the conference. They beat Maryland in the conference. They have a couple of other decent wins outside of the conference. I think Michigan is in. All right. A thought on this matchup with Rutgers, that is an afternoon game in Chicago with Michigan. The three point favorite. Thought on that, Kyle?

Speaker 2:

Yeah. There was a time this season where I would’ve been stunned to talk about Rutgers being on the bubble, because they were playing really well. They won at Purdue. They had some really nice wins going. This is a Rutgers team that has really fallen apart at the end of the season. We discussed last week, that lost to Minnesota where they were up by nine or 10 points with a minute left. I mean, just a heartbreaking way to lose. That might have sealed their fate. If they don’t win this game, I think there’s a decent chance they’ll be out. I like Rutgers, the way they play, I like their defense that they put up, but they come into this game with the lack of momentum, really bad form. Talk about who’s playing their best at the end of the season, they’re not playing their best. There’s no doubt about that.

You’re not going to consider me a Michigan guy by any means, but Michigan has played pretty well, even in their losses here of late, TJ. They lost in double overtime to Illinois, a game that they probably should have won. They lost in overtime to Indiana. Neither of those are bad losses by any means. They beat Rutgers 58-45 at the Rack they’re a couple weeks ago. I would bet the under if I were betting this game, thinking that this is a really big game for both teams. I think the tempo will be slow. Defense should be good. That would be my favorite bet here. I think Michigan probably wins the game, but I like the under here.

Speaker 1:

Again, that game is, we’re live here on Thursday, coming up in about 20 minutes. If you’re interested in getting in on that one at betus.com, you’ve got about 20 minutes, 11:00 AM start time, local time in Chicago for that Big 10 game. First game up on the floor is Michigan and Rutgers. Let’s continue. The A train 33 is watching us. Thank you. He says, “I’m interested to see can Miami of Ohio cover. They’ve been a covering machine.” He also says, “I’ve seen some crazy talk about Wake Forest beating Miami.” All right, first a thought on Wake Forest, a winner last night over Syracuse. Jim Boeheim now officially retiring, the school announcing that after the Wake Forest win. Wake Forest Miami, Kyle, you may have that lying in front of you while I scan everything. A thought on Wake and Miami on the neutral floor.

Speaker 2:

Looks like Miami minus seven. This one opened at five. It’s gone up a couple points. I think seven’s a lot to lay. Wake Forest is a good team, well coached. I think they’re one of those ACC teams that may be a bit underrated. I think seven’s too many. Total, deservingly high, 158. I think that will be a high scoring game. I don’t really want to bet over 158, but I lean toward Wake Forest in a game like that. I think Miami probably wins, but probably doesn’t cover that big of a spread. This is a early game at Greensboro, so yeah, in this one there’s not too much time left if you want to bet this one. TJ, I just want to shout out real quick, how many people have jumped into the chat and how many people are watching live.

Speaker 1:

It’s incredible.

Speaker 2:

Watching that number go up. Thank you everybody for tuning in today.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, no doubt. Again, get in on the Miami Wake game as we’re live. Again, if you’re watching us later, be here live, tomorrow we’re here at 10:00 AM. Make sure you’re here at 10:00 AM live. That game is coming up, again as we do this live, in about 15 minutes, Miami and Wake Forest for a spot in the semi-finals in Greensboro. I’m seeing a live audience record. It keeps growing and keeps going. They got a great question on the live chat for the poll. How many games are you watching today? Is anybody watching only between one and three games today? I mean, forget that. It’s got to be four through six and up. B, C or D on the poll choice. I think I’m going to go D, more than 10. I will be watching parts or most of 10 games probably today. Get in on that in the live chat on the poll. All right. He asked also A Train 33 about Miami of Ohio. Help me with that, Kyle. That is tonight in the MAC conference tournament or what is that?

Speaker 2:

That’s the one that’s already going on, so to lean [inaudible 00:43:30].

Speaker 1:

Okay. We don’t have anything for that. Yes.

Speaker 2:

35, 23. I really have no opinion on a game where Toledo’s already winning by 12.

Speaker 1:

Actually, I’ve got an updated score now that Toledo’s up 14, late in the first half. Maybe you’re looking to live bet. We’re always big on the Toledo team total. We didn’t get to that one before it started. I think that started right as the show began, right, at 11:00 AM with Miami and Toledo in the MAC, Toledo, the top seed there in the Mid America Conference. Let’s continue on live questions.

Scott, watching. Thank you. Scott says, “Yukon, Providence. There was a lot of belief in Providence right up until Seton Hall destroyed them this past weekend on senior day at home.” I see you shaking your head. What do we make of Providence now coming back around playing Yukon here on a Thursday at Madison Square Garden? Kyle Hunter, thoughts on this game, and I believe that is an early game that is this afternoon at 2:30 Eastern Time. It’s the second game up on the floor with Yukon favorite, I’m seeing, by seven, six and a half, half or seven on the Bet Us line. Thought Kyle Hunter, Yukon, Providence

Speaker 2:

My leans the under. This is Madison Square Garden game as well. I lean to the under. Everybody just saw Providence play that bad. I know everybody here is betting Yukon. I see the ticket count is definitely heavily toward Yukon in this one. I understand that, but I do think Ed Cooley’s a good coach. I think it’s a really good motivating spot saying, “We just got our butts handed to us in that last game. We got to kind of prove that that’s not who we are.” I think Providence does have pride, so I’d be scared of laying seven points. I think this game could be a bit closer than you would think. My favorite bet there would be the under, like I said at Madison Square Garden, probably the first half under.

Providence offense has been a lot more efficient than their defense, which is surprising because usually it’s the other way around, with Cooley kind of mixing up 131 zone, man to man, switching it up a lot on defense. I just think that this is kind of a dangerous spot for Yukon. I think Yukon will probably win. Yukon a very complete team, well-balanced team. It’s easy to say Providence, look how bad they suck. They just lost to Seton Hall, but contrarian in me worries a bit about that.

Speaker 1:

They win a ton of close games and have the last couple of years and overtime games. They shoot free throws well. They don’t turn it over, to your point about Cooley’s teams being well coached. Let’s see what happens in that matchup in the Big East. Let’s continue. American Conference. All right, we’re going all over the place. American Conference in Fort Worth. Jake is watching and says, “South Florida money line versus East Carolina. USF out of Tampa.” Again, Brian Gregory’s team, I believe did sweep East Carolina in the regular season. I’ll double check on that. Any thought on that game, Kyle? Or just leave it alone in Fort Worth, Texas American Conference opening round game?

Speaker 2:

Yeah. Money line has to be decently high there. I don’t see it. Minus three and a half is the line. Money line has to be a decent high. Again, I’m not a big fan of laying that big kind of price on the money line, especially with the South Florida team that … TJ, I mean South Florida’s okay, but they’re not a great team that you want to be trusting on the money line. Certainly not as good as TJ’s Memphis Tigers.

Speaker 1:

Let me interject. You know the situation in my house. I used to do the USF game, South Florida on the radio. Mrs. Rives is a Bull. Whenever the South Florida Bulls out of Tampa play Memphis, I never hear the end of it, especially if the Tigers don’t win. The Tigers did beat USF earlier this year, so it was a little quieter in the house on that. That game is coming up by the way, 11:30 local time, 12:30 Eastern Time. I show a total at like 141 for South Carolina, I’m sorry, for East Carolina, South Florida. Any lean on the total? Are you leaning under there in Fort Worth? Both teams have not played a game yet in that building.

Speaker 2:

This is not a building that’s been big to the under in general. I’m pretty neutral as far as the total in this one. I think I made the total just a little higher than this. South Florida’s played quite a bit quicker this year. Now, this is a winter go home situation, so I don’t know if they’ll continue playing at 70 possessions or something, as far as a really quick pace. I think it’s a tough game to bet. South Florida’s not a very consistent team. Those inconsistent teams scare me.

Speaker 1:

All right, fair enough. Let’s see. Next. Couple more live questions while we have time. Brandon watching. Thank you, Brandon. Says, “Thoughts on St. John’s on the side. Kyle Hunter, taking eight and a half against Marquette in the Biggies tournament. Marquette the top seed.” Thoughts on that, Kyle?

Speaker 2:

Yeah. I mean, this is basically a home game for St. John’s. They play several of their games here to start with, so they’re pretty comfortable playing in a game like this. Marquette and St. John’s just played that game that was, I believe, 96,-94 at Marquette. Just a wild game. St. John’s has proven that they can play with a team like that. I think St. John’s upside is pretty high. It’s just they haven’t been very consistent either. I would take St. John’s and the points there. I do agree that that would be the look that I’d be going for there.

Speaker 1:

Mike Anderson under fire. He needs a win or two, maybe in this tournament, to hang on to the job at St. John’s. He’s been there three or four years. They’ve got to win some games. We’ll see if that’s the case.I’m looking on game time, that is tonight. That’s actually up right now, coming up here in about 15 minutes. St. John’s, Marquette is the first game on the floor. Again, Marquette is the one seed for Shaka Smarts team. Let’s see what happens in that one.

Couple of more questions before we are gone. Devin asks about the SEC, Auburn and Arkansas. That one coming up tonight in Nashville on the neutral floor. When last we saw Arkansas, Kentucky whacked them, beat them badly at home on their senior day. Auburn got a big win over Tennessee recently at home. Any thought, Kyle, on that one tonight? I am also looking there for a line for us. For that matchup. I see three and a half I believe, on the Bet US line, Arkansas, Auburn. Any thought, Kyle?

Speaker 2:

Wow. What a line move here. I’m wondering if there’s some kind of information that I haven’t seen here, because Auburn was minus one and a half now it swings all the way to them being a dog of three or three and a half points.

Speaker 1:

Is it an injury? Is it maybe an injury? Yes.

Speaker 2:

I’m going to have to check on this. If there’s no injury, if there’s no big news here, I’m surprised that Arkansas would be favored by this much. They have not been very good. Their hype was bigger than what they have been so far this year. I know Auburn is not tremendous either, but without any kind of big news, I would lean Auburn there. Bridgestone Arena, another arena that’s kind of been pretty good for under. It’s not nearly to the degree of Madison Square Garden, but this is another big arena that’s not really made for basketball to start with. Unders there would be my lean, but these two teams play pretty quickly, plus the points. Auburn is my lean, but like I said, I want to look into that one closer because I’m surprised at the line move.

Speaker 1:

I’m looking here. I just did a search to see if there is anything. It’s Dylan Cardwell who is injured. He is still questionable with the ankle injury and maybe that has something to do with it. Cardwell did not play against Tennessee. He is officially questionable to play in this game and the game is not until tonight at 6:00 local time, 7:00 Eastern Time. That may be the injury, Kyle. Maybe there’s another one, but that may be the injury that moved the line because there’s uncertainty and so people start betting Arkansas. There we go on that. Brandon watching us real quick. Brandon says, “Ohio or Bull State in the MAC.” That game has not started yet. That’s in the MidAmerica Conference tournament. Any thought Kyle, and I don’t have a number in front of me, on what that is.

Speaker 2:

I think that one was about [inaudible 00:51:28] the last I saw. It still is right in that range. First half under would be my look in that game if I was betting it. These two teams, 151 total for the game is pretty high. The pace won’t be that fast. This is where the Cavs play, so it’s a big arena again for a MAC game. These teams are not used to playing in this big of an arena. Obviously, there won’t be that many people there compared to what the place holds. Unders there have done pretty well as well. As far as a side, I think I lean Ohio, but nothing too strong.

Speaker 1:

TJ question before we are done. San Jose State and Nevada, very interesting here. This is 2:30 in Vegas, 5:30 Eastern Time. Both of these teams in opposite directions right now. San Jose State ticking up with Tim Miles. They’ve been winning games late in the year. Nevada and awful loss at Marquette. Another bad loss at home against UNLV. This is Nevada still favored by four and a half on the neutral floor at the Thomas and Max Center. Is it overstating it to say that, yes, Nevada’s got some good wins, but if they lose this game they’re going to be very nervous and may be out at large here if San Jose State gets them. Kyle, a quick thought out west on that one.

Speaker 2:

Yeah. I think they’re out if they lose this game. They better win. There’s a lot of bubble teams there in the Mountain West. The Mountain West, a decent conference but certainly not one that you want to be losing these kind of games and expect to still get in. I would probably take the points with San Jose State there if I had to bet that game. This is a San Jose State team that very well coached. I think Tim Miles is underrated as a coach. He’s done a good job with not fantastic talent anywhere he’s been. I think he’s an underrated coach. This Nevada team has not been consistent enough for me to want to lay that many points.

Speaker 1:

Again for Miles, they won 10 games in a tough Mountain West that may end up getting as many as four teams in the NCA tournament. They have been dismal at San Jose State for a decade. What a great job he has done. Again, for San Jose State, they beat Boise State, Colorado State and Air Force right in a row to end the regular season. I’m looking for the matchup with Nevada for a recent sample. Nevada did beat them in Reno by 15 about two weeks ago, now a neutral floor game. Let’s see what happens there.

Hey, real quick, back to the PAC 12 tournament. Several people in the chat are asking about the total in UCLA, Colorado and the interest there. UCLA is favored on the neutral floor as the top seed. Any thought, Kyle, on the total? You may have that before me before we get off the air here. Any thought?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I mean I’ll lean to the under. I see that’s what the chat’s kind of thinking with a early start, a noon tip time, UCLA look a little bit different there without …

Speaker 1:

I see the total 133. That doesn’t concern you a little bit there on that one? UCLA does play a lot of low scoring games, right?

Speaker 2:

I mean UCLA’s defense is excellent. I think they’re second ranked in Ken Pom in defensive efficiency. I don’t think Colorado will score very many points. The question is how many will UCLA score? They’re usually not a team that runs it up too much and their tempo’s relatively slow, so I think the under is probably a pretty decent look there.

Speaker 1:

I am looking at the live audience continuing to grow. Reminder ,peeps, we are here at 10:00 AM tomorrow, 10:00 AM Eastern Time, an hour earlier. We’re also here Saturday for you. Saturday with all those championship games, Big East, ACC, PAC 12, Big 12, over and over again. All the title games that are going on everywhere. We will be here Saturday 11:00 AM on that one as well. Anything else out of the live chat? I’m just double checking here to see if there’s anything else that we didn’t cover.

A couple of people are asking about New Mexico and Utah State. That’s another interesting one in the Mountain West. New Mexico can really help themselves. Utah State has an at-large case. If they get the win, New Mexico in this one, they would potentially be playing Boise State who’s got a double buy into the Friday semi-final. New Mexico could maybe make the NCA tournament by beating Nevada on the neutral floor and then Boise State. Any quick thought on New Mexico, Nevada later at the Mountain West?

Speaker 2:

Yeah. New Mexico, Utah State. I mean this is a really big game for both teams. Two teams that would be on the bubble. New Mexico really hurt themselves when Jalen House was out. I mean I think it’s pretty clear how big of a difference he is to the team. Really kind of makes the team go. People kind of thought Mashburn was the most important player to the team. Mashburn’s a great player, but it looks to me like Jalen House is the most important player to this team.

This is a high total for a good reason. I don’t know who to bet in this one. I think I would lean to the over. Even over 157. I think the pace will be super fast in that game. Obviously too, we should point out this being at the Thomas and Max Center, they play there already, so it’s not like it’s some foreign place that’s a massive facility that they’ve never seen before. That would help with a high total. I don’t know who to bet on the side there, TJ. Three and a half for Utah State. Both teams bubble-ish teams. I don’t know.

Speaker 1:

Utah State not as good away from home. They’re really good at Logan. Two or three of their big wins were at home. This is neutral floor. New Mexico did play a game yesterday, here we go again, on that floor and now they get ready to play a Utah state game. That Utah state team that hasn’t played a game yet in that matchup. All right.

We gave you a ton and they’re about to be a bunch of tips. Kyle and I are ready to go watch a bunch of tips. I know you guys are too. Let’s go over his two official plays. Here they are. You still have time to act on these if you so choose here. He’s on two plays including an under in a WAC Tournament game with Cal Baptist in Sam Houston and the team total under for DePaul in that matchup coming in the Biggies Tournament here with Xavier later on this evening.

With that, Kyle, great job. You and I attacked it here today. We did great. What do you say we come back in 22 hours? We sort through all of this and we come back in 22 hours at 10:00 AM tomorrow and go at it again for a Friday, that is again, going to have 60, 70 more games on Friday to go over. Cannot wait to do that. Final thought from you as we get going here?

Speaker 2:

Man, TJ, we covered a lot of ground. I just looked down like five minutes ago, and I was like, we’ve already been talking this long. We love college basketball so much, the time flies. We covered a lot. Man, tons of people here today. Appreciate everybody tuning in. I was smashing that over 10 games in the poll question there.

Speaker 1:

Oh, yeah. We’re definitely watching over 10 parts of 10 in this one today. Again, hit that like button before you leave. The live viewer ratio to like button is still right now, about eight or nine to one. Hit the button for us. Subscribe. We’ve crossed the 4,500 subscriber threshold.
