UFC 240: Edgar vs Holloway
Saturday, July 27th – 10:00 PM EDT
Rogers Place, Edmonton, Canada
UFC 240 will take place in Canada on July 27th with the featherweight title on the line. Max “Blessed” Holloway (20-3) will step into the octagon to defend his featherweight title against Frankie “The Answer” Edgar (22-6-1).
Holloway will have a significant size advantage in this fight over the oft-undersized Edgar.
Max will have a 5” height and leg reach advantage and just a 1” reach advantage, coming off a toughly contested loss to Dustin in his last fight. Poirier hurt Max early and often and while it seemed the Hawaiian may have been out of the fight early, he showed the heart of a champion and rallied to win a couple of rounds and take the fight to a decision. The fight marked Blessed’s first foray into lightweight were was clearly undersized against Diamond.
Leading up to that fight, Holloway was riding a 10-fight winning streak. In the previous three fights, Holloway knocked out Brian Ortega and Jose Aldo (twice). He won in dominating fashion both times. With the second Aldo fight and the win over Ortega, Max Holloway has now successfully defended his featherweight title twice.
Frankie Edgar’s Keys to Victory
Former lightweight champ and featherweight title contender, Frankie Edgar is coming off a decisive win over Cub Swanson. Prior to scoring the decision over Swanson, Edgar caught a mean uppercut from Brian Ortega that had him seeing stars. He went into that fight after putting a master class on Yair Rodriguez.
Edgar is a future Hall of Famer for his accomplishments, his battles, and his heart. He has been undersized in most of his 29 fights yet has won at a 76% clip, he has fought the best of the best at 155 and 145 and has hung with them all. He has only lost to some of the best fighters at his weight class. Unfortunately, I think that happens again this Saturday.
Holloway is a superb boxer with a powerful jab that he’ll use to keep Edgar at the range. The Answer is still a top fighter, but he doesn’t have the power to put out someone with Holloway’s chin. If Holloway withstood the bombs that Poirier landed on him, he won’t succumb to Edgar.
Frankie Edgar will have his hands full trying to close the distance to take the much larger man down. Holloway is a great defensive fighter with a good ground game and long limbs.
Max Holloway -425 is the clear favorite here. It’s for a reason. Bet on Blessed at UFC 240.
Cris Cyborg is headed back into the octagon after suffering her first loss in ages. She will be facing Felicia Spencer.
Cris will be looking to bounce back after suffering the first KO of her career. She should be able to do that against Spencer this Saturday night.
Spencer undefeated at 6-0, was the Invicta FC Featherweight Champion before signing with the UFC for this fight. Spencer is coming off a first-round submission win over Megan Anderson. She has finished five of her seven opponents.
Few women have stood toe-to-toe with Cyborg and came away with their consciousness. Spencer will be on that list of women the get the Men In Black flash treatment.
Cyborg -700 is the clear play here.
We haven’t seen evidence from either that this fight should go any other way.
