Dana White Promises “Masterpiece” at UFC 306: Here’s Everything We Know So Far

Earlier this year, UFC President Dana White revealed the promotion’s plan to host its UFC 306 pay-per-view at the Las Vegas Sphere on Sept.14. It’s been dubbed a one-off-a-kind spectacular that won’t be replicated ever again.

Last September saw UFC Noche begin a tradition of dedicating a fight weekend to Mexican Independence Day, and UFC 306 is anticipated to have a similar theme. Last year’s Noche main event between Valentina Shevchenko and Mexico’s only UFC champion, Alexa Grasso, is one of several rumored fights in what would complete a trilogy of bouts between the two women’s flyweight legends.

However, at the time of writing, UFC news has been stum on the Mexican Independence weekend card in conjunction with White claiming it will be “A masterpiece.

UFC 306 Will Be ‘A Work of Art,’ Says Dana White

The Las Vegas Sphere has been the talk of the town since its opening in 2023, but nobody predicted it would become a venue for the world’s finest mixed martial artists… In-step, Dana White:

We’ve spent a lot of money on this event. No one will be able to replicate it because no one can spend as much. It will be a work of art, and that’s a reality; it will never be repeated,” White commented, to confirm then it’ll coincide with the company’s continued annual celebration of Mexican Independence Day.

While the UFC hasn’t officially announced any fights for its debut at ‘The Sphere,’ three championship bouts are believed to occur, two of which could include a pair of the company’s most high-profile stars.

Ilia Topuria vs Max Holloway: Is the UFC Casting a Spaniard for UFC 306?

Combat sports diehards are already geared up for a potential clash between Ilia Topuria and Max Holloway. The storyline began when ‘Blessed’ flatlined Justin Gaethje at UFC 300, as he claimed the BMF title with just one second left on the clock. The newly crowned “Bad Mother Fu**ing” champ called out Topuria, and the pair have exchanged some heated words since.

Speculation and fan desire for this contest to materialize have been the driving force thus far, but ‘El Matador,’ during an interview on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Hour, did reveal that the UFC would like him to defend the featherweight championship at The Sphere in September.

In addition, during an interview with SportskeedaMMA, Topuria hinted that Holloway is the first in line:

My target is to return in September, so we are in the conversations right now, so we’ll see. If Max Holloway can fight in September, we fight. If not, I don’t know; maybe we can fight at the end of the year or something like that. Because I want to fight as soon as possible because next year I want to fight in Spain, so I want to be ready for that date.”

This statement from Topuria not only confirms the UFC’s plans to have him fight at UFC 306 but also reveals that they’re adamant about Holloway being his next opponent because if ‘Blessed’ isn’t able to fight in September, they’d be willing to push the bout to later in 2024.

The Spanish-Georgian Topuria is one of the fastest-rising MMA stars, and Max Holloway is, well, Max Holloway! It’s a main event worthy of any event, but as the UFC’s one-off spectacle inside ‘The Sphere,’ can you imagine the scenes?

‘Suga’ Sean O’Malley’s First Title Defence at UFC 306

If Topuria/Holloway doesn’t tickle your fancy, perhaps UFC rumors that Sean O’Malley’s first title defense will be its co-main event will!

O’Malley discussed his first title defense on the MMAFightingonSBN YouTube channel and shared that the official announcement won’t likely arrive until the end of June:

It’s going to happen; it’s going to happen this year – I’m guessing [and] I’m hoping that it will be at The Sphere still; I’ve been pushing for that for a while, but if not The Sphere, then December in Vegas.”

The thought of O’Malley’s star power playing as a co-main event might not make sense to some, and while it could be the backup main event (Not the rumored co-main event) if Holloway or Topuria cannot sign on the dotted line, they could offer ‘Suga’ PPV points for this special, one-off event, thus making it a totally viable scheduling scenario.

His expected opponent? None other than Merab Dvalishvili, the rising Georgian wrestler who’s been on a tear of late and is notably the training partner of Aljamain Sterling, the man ‘Suga’ KO’d to become the bantamweight champion earlier this year.

Again, it’s another storyline that’s written itself and a clash of different styles that gets our excitement levels peeking as fight fans.

We already know the UFC’s Sphere show will be unique, but should the aforementioned triple threat of title bouts potentially lined up, it has the meat and bones to eclipse the hype of UFC 300 earlier this year, and that’s saying something!
