Former Champion Can Buck Odds at UFC 278
Aldo Slight Underdog
Jose Aldo is this close to another shot at the belt. And to do it, he must get past the top gatekeeper in Merab Dvalishvili. The UFC odds give Dvalishvili the edge, but that could be inaccurate as Aldo has specialized in taking out grapplers like him. Aldo is 3-3 as an underdog in the UFC and could be a solid bet online as one yet again. Let’s get to it and Bet on UFC now!
Aldo Eats Grapplers For Breakfast
Aldo has been competing professionally since 2004 and he’s still “got it.” After taking out Rob Font and Marlon Vera, Aldo has just one more hurdle to overcome to get a chance to become a two-division champion. Fortunately for Aldo, he’s going up against the type of fighter he’s built a career from beating: a wrestler.

Back when the UFC’s champions were wrestlers like Georges St-Pierre and Dominick Cruz, Aldo stuck out as one of the few Muay Thai champs. He’s unbeaten against wrestlers, having turned back the likes of Chad Mendes and Frankie Edgar twice each.
Aldo has famously defended against takedowns – 90 percent according to the UFC’s stats. And in a three-round fight with a large octagon, he’ll have more wiggle room. Even at 35 years of age, Aldo still has the speed and “pop” in his strikes. He’s about as good of an underdog as you’ll find on the online sportsbook.
Dvalishvili Looks to be the Exception
Dvalishvili is no fool. He’s heard all about Aldo and his famed “takedown defense.” But the Georgian is something else – a wrestling machine hence his moniker. “The Machine” is relentless and averages a mind-boggling 7.3 takedowns per 15 minutes. You read that right.
The betting favorite has landed four or more takedowns in eight of his nine fights. In the one fight he didn’t, he still attempted 20 takedown attempts. His opponent, John Dodson, spent the most of the fight defending against his takedowns and landed a measly 27 significant strikes.
If the best defense is a good offense, Dvalishvili has that in spades. He will blitz Aldo with takedown after takedown attempt and either breaks him or contains him.
Aldo vs Dvalishvili Head-to-Head
Aldo will be the bigger fighter in this matchup. He is taller by an inch and has a two-inch reach advantage. Dvalishvili is four years younger and has fought 20 fewer professional fights than Aldo. Most notably, Dvalishvili made his pro debut in 2014 when Aldo was a UFC champion.

Aldo vs Dvalishvili Prediction
We’re backing Aldo to get it done against Dvalishvili in this bantamweight tilt. While Dvalishvili will try to wear Aldo down by abusing takedown attempts, it’s not something Aldo has not seen. He has one of the best sprawls in MMA and is slippery at escaping fighters who grab hold of him. Having a larger octagon will also allow him to control the distance better.
In fact, we’re doubling down and predicting Aldo to knock out Dvalishvili. That could be the best UFC bet when you look at the UFC props. Aldo can time Dvalishvili with a knee or a kick when he spams one too many takedowns. Alternatively, parlaying Aldo with another underdog on UFC 278 can yield a massive payout.
