Australasians and Prospects Headline UFC 271 Early Prelims

Australasia Arise

UFC 271 may be taking place in Houston, but it’s made for the Australasians. Six fighters, from Israel Adesanya and Robert Whittaker in the main event, to three fighters in the early prelims, highlight the card. Joining them are more must-watch prospects as we preview their chances on the UFC betting lines.

UFC 271 Early Prelim Picks

Mana Martinez vs Ronnie Lawrence

  • Moneyline: Mana Martinez +220, Ronnie Lawrence -300
  • Round Totals: Over 2½ (-190), Under 2½ (+155)
  • Weight Class (Rounds): Bantamweight (135 lbs) (3 Rounds)

Ronnie Lawrence gets top billing in the early prelims for a reason: he is a highly-touted prospect who’s the complete package. Mana Martinez is a scrappy fighter, but a few levels below Lawrence. Lawrence (7-1-0) should be able to confound Martinez (9-2-0) for a decision or a late finish. For better value, bet the ‘over’.

Pick: Over 2½ Rounds (-190)

Alexander Hernandez vs Renato Moicano

  • Moneyline: Alexander Hernandez +140, Renato Moicano -170
  • Round Totals: Over 2½ (Ev), Under 2½ (-130)
  • Weight Class (Rounds): Lightweight (155 lbs) (3 Rounds)

Alexander Hernandez and Renato Moicano are lightweights looking to return to contention, and our money is on the underdog, Hernandez (13-4-0). The “Great Ape” has great value here, and could be the best UFC bet on the early prelims. He hits harder and can nullify Moicano’s (15-4-1) grappling with his wrestling.

Pick: Alexander Hernandez +140

Carlos Ulberg vs Fabio Cherant

  • Moneyline: Fabio Cherant +205, Carlos Ulberg -255
  • Round Totals: Over 1½ (+110), Under 1½ (-140)
  • Weight Class (Rounds): Light Heavyweight (205 lbs) (3 Rounds)

The early online sports betting lines on Carlos Ulberg got steamed like a rice bun. Israel Adesanya’s boy, Ulberg (3-1-0) has a tailor-made opponent. He’s coming off a KO loss in a fight he was dominating, so he gets Fabio Cherant, a grappler who thinks he’s a striker. Unless Cherant (7-3-0) finds a way to get this to the mat, he’s eating it. However, instead of betting Ulberg, bet on the under.

Pick: Under 1½ Rounds (-140)

A.J. Dobson vs Jacob Malkoun

  • Moneyline: Jacob Malkoun -115, A.J. Dobson -115
  • Round Totals: Over 2½ (+130), Under 2½ (-160)
  • Weight Class (Rounds): Middleweight (185 lbs) (3 Rounds)

We can’t blame folks for going back-and-forth on this one. Both A.J. Dobson and Jacob Malkoun are as raw as prospects come, and this is either an early finish for Dobson (6-0-0) or a late finish/decision for Malkoun (5-1-0). We’re leaning on the latter as Malkoun, with the UFC experience and home crowd backing him, should wrestle down Dobson.

Pick: Jacob Malkoun (-115)

Douglas Silva de Andrade vs Sergey Morozov

  • Moneyline: Douglas Silva de Andrade +170, Sergey Morozov -215
  • Round Totals: Over 2½ (-180), Under 2½ (+150)
  • Weight Class (Rounds): Bantamweight (135 lbs) (3 Rounds)

Sergey Morozov gets tested by veteran Douglas Silva de Andrade. The Brazilian De Andrade (27-4-0) is a fast starter and hits hard. However, Morozov (17-4-0) is a tough customer who’s shown he can hang with both strikers and grapplers. His line is not ideal, but bet online on Morozov or include him a parlay, as he should outlast De Andrade.

Pick: Sergey Morozov (-215)

Jeremiah Wells vs Mike Mathetha

  • Moneyline: Mike Mathetha +180, Jeremiah Wells -230
  • Round Totals: Over 1½ (+120), Under 1½ (-150)
  • Weight Class (Rounds): Welterweight (170 lbs) (3 Rounds)

Jeremiah Wells and Mike Mathetha, better known as “Blood Diamond” will kick off UFC 271 with a bang. One of these heavy-handed strikers will go down. Wells (9-2-1) is as explosive as they come with one-punch knockout power, while Mathetha (3-0-0) is a spectacular striker. Either way, one will get finished quickly, so bet the under.

Pick: Under 1½ Rounds (-150)
