Font and Yanez Meet at a Crossroads

Rob Font fights Adrian Yanez on UFC 287’s featured bout Saturday in what is a potential changing of the guard for the bantamweight division. Font, a former top-five fighter in the division, is the underdog on the UFC lines. He’s coming from two straight losses while Yanez is ranked 12th and is undefeated in the UFC. Despite their career trajectories, Font could just edge this one out.

Talk of Font’s Demise Greatly Exaggerated

Font was this close to a title shot at one point in his career. Unfortunately, he ate one too many hard punches from Marlon Vera and Jose Aldo. Now, he’s staring at a three-fight losing streak if the UFC betting odds prove accurate.

But the lines could be off here. This may be a typical case of the public overreacting to Font losing two straight fights. To his credit, he outstruck Vera and Aldo. In fact, Font lands 6.38 significant strikes per minute versus absorbing just 3.95 in return.

Only two fighters have outstruck Font in the Octagon: John Lineker and Raphael Assuncao and the latter did it by outgrappling Font. The key for Font will be to keep Yanez from pressuring him and hitting him too often. Font does not have the best durability so he will need to be nearly flawless here. But as an underdog, Font is worth betting online.

Yanez Faces a Significant Step up in Competition

Yanez has a bright future in the UFC if his post-fight bonuses are anything to go by. In five UFC fights, he’s won five performance bonuses. It’s six if you count his Contender Series win that earned him a contract with the UFC to begin with. He’s the popular UFC pick here for a reason.

But not to discredit his wins, but his UFC opponents are a combined 5-10-1 if we exclude the Davey Grant fight. Grant is 6-5 in the UFC and Yanez eked this one out via a split decision. So taking on Font, a man that’s fought former champions and title contenders, is Yanez’s biggest challenge.

Going by the online gambling, however, this is a favorable matchup for Yanez. He is the harder and more explosive striker here and has less wear and tear. Yanez is also around the same size as Font so he should have no issues closing the gap and hitting Font from distance. But as far as boxing skills go, Yanez will need to overcome the gap with his power.

Font vs Yanez Head-to-Head

Font and Yanez are similarly sized as fighters. Font is just a bit taller and longer as he stands 5-foot-8 with a 71-inch reach. Yanez is 5-foot-7 with 70 inches of reach. Both strike in the orthodox stance. Font is 35 and six years older than Yanez.
