Ige With the Edge

Saturday’s UFC fight card features Dan Ige vs Nate Landwehr, and according to the sportsbook, Ige commands the most respect.

The featherweights battle at UFC 289 in what should be a close contest, but Ige is the -260 favorite with bookmakers.

Sport betting odds have Landwehr at +200 to cause an upset.

Ige on Comeback Trail

One loss can derail a career, but for Ige, losing to Movsar Evloev in 2022 made him hungry.

The 31-year-old knows it’s now or never to make his way up the featherweight rankings, and he showed that when knocking out Damon Jackson in January.

It was a much-needed win for the American, who has attracted most of the attention with UFC betting markets. He is slightly shorter than expected, but the 16-6 fighter has class on his side.

He had a rough 2021, losing consecutive fights to Josh Emmett and the Korean Zombie, but with wins over Edson Barboza and Kevin Aguilar on his record, he can mix it with the best.

“To not win for 22 months really sucked,” Ige said. “To get one over Damon Jackson felt really great and to get a knockout and performance bonus on top of that just made it even better.”

He’s respecting Landwehr and believes it will be an exciting contest.

“He’s exciting, he comes to fight, and he brings it. He wants to put on exciting fights. He might make a dumb decision to make the fight a little more exciting so I’m honestly looking forward to it. It’s going to be fireworks.”

Grappling Key for Landwehr

UFC odds might have Landwehr as the underdog, but if he takes the fight to the ground, Ige could be in trouble.

The 35-year-old comes off a submission victory over Austin Lingo, and although the opposition he has faced isn’t anywhere near what Ige has faced, it’s still a good win.

The former M-1 Global featherweight champion has had mixed success since signing with the UFC in 2020, but we haven’t been overly impressed.

He owns two wins by submission but lacks knockout power, so Ige could take advantage when the fight is standing. If Landwehr wants any chance to win, he needs to close the space and turn it into a boring grappling match.

Scoring a win by decision would also be fine for Landwehr, who is trying to get momentum in the division. He comes off consecutive wins, so beating Ige could see him earn a title contender fight soon.

If he gets off to a fast start, live betting odds could see the market change. He could move into favoritism if he wins the first round on points. Ige would then need to play catch-up, which isn’t easy against a grappler.
