Welterweights Clash at UFC 289
There are some quality fixtures on the UFC fight card at UFC 289, including Mike Malott vs Adam Fugitt.
The sportsbook has the popular Malott at -210 to improve his record to 10-1-1, but Fugitt has the size advantage and he comes off a knockout win.
It will be explosive and it could be one of the better fights on the pay-per-view card.
Malott Unbeaten in UFC
UFC betting odds have Malott at short odds because he has looked impressive in two UFC fights.
He started his UFC career with a knockout win over Mickey Gall, who has been an easy-beat throughout his career, but it was a first-round knockout, which was impressive.
He then submitted Yohan Lainesse, which showcased his versatility, so there is a lot going in favor of Malott, who could shorten with sport betting markets.
Malott hasn’t engaged in much trash talk, which Fugitt picked up on.
“He’s kind of the king of the compliment sandwich I think. He starts out with a little positivity, he hits you in the middle, and then he ends it with positivity. It’s something that my boss back in the day kind of was really good at. I just kind of took a little bit of that, and you know, I remember what this feels like,” Fugitt said.
We think it’s clever from Malott, who has a sense of professionalism about him. It bodes well for the favorite, and if he gets off to a fast start, live betting markets could take action for Malott to win before the final bell.
Confident Fugitt Eyes KO
UFC odds gives Fugitt some chance of beating Malott at +165, but he isn’t expected to have his hand raised despite coming off an impressive knockout win.
The 34-year-old is 9-3 following a knockout win over Yasaku Kinoshita in February. He wasn’t facing a tough opponent, but the welterweight didn’t look tested with the late first-round KO.
He landed 33 total strikes compared to 11 from Kinoshita, so he was dominant from the outset. Therefore, there could be value with his online gambling odds.
Prior to the win he was knocked out by Michael Morales in his UFC debut. He was thrown in the deep end at UFC 277, but it was clear that he needed more time.
A concern was his takedown efficiency, after landing just one from eight attempts. However, as we saw when Kai Kara-France was robbed last week, scoring the takedown doesn’t always mean much in the eyes of the judges.
Fugitt could wear out Malott, who doesn’t often go deep into a fight.
