The Ultimate Fighting Championship was absent from last week’s calendar, but following the short break, we’re back with a highly anticipated women’s flyweight banger for UFC Denver this Saturday night, as “Thug” Rose Namajunas trades leather with Tracy Cortez.

Thug Rose: A Thorn in Her Contender’s Side

MMA diehards need little to no introduction for “Thug” Rose. The former two-time women’s strawweight champ has been engaged in octagon violence since the very beginning of women’s weight classes being introduced to the company (2014). As the only woman to defeat the reigning 115lb titleholder, Weili Zhang, it’s always a pleasure to reflect on the head-kick knockout that was heard around the world.

If you aren’t familiar with Rose’s work, a brief summary can instantly give you an idea of her capabilities. She’s been fighting the best women fighters on the planet for a decade, is a multi-time champion with some beautiful highlight reels, and is now attempting to add more gold to her collection by testing herself in the flyweight rankings.

Namajunas seems like the better UFC betting pick in this fight.

Tracy Cortez: Beyond the Beauty

Tracy Cortez is an absolute stunner, so much so that one might consider shooting their shot when seeing her out in the wild. However, step away politely upon your rejection because this damsel isn’t in distress, but she’ll certainly cause you some should you want to misbehave.

Beyond the breathtakingly beautiful face and bod, Cortez is a relentless fighter when the cage door closes. Behind twelve pro-career MMA bouts is one lone loss from her debut bout, and since then, she’s gone on an 11-fight winning streak to reach her first main event in Denver on July 13.

Fight Ready MMA in Scottsdale, Arizona, has carefully crafted Cortez’s UFC career since she joined the promotion in 2019, and now aged 30, she’ll enter the biggest fight of her fighting tenure in hopes of keeping the unbeaten UFC streak (5-0) alive.

Wrestler vs Striker: A Styles Clash

With countless performances dictated by a powerful wrestling offense, it’s no secret which path Tracy Cortez takes to achieve victory in the cage. Her takedowns are relentless, and the top control she can maintain is regularly the prime reason for her winning rounds.

On that note, she’s never fought five rounds, and her grinding ground game isn’t matched with much striking or submission attacks. Across 25 minutes versus the former champ, it isn’t easy to envision this style prevailing for 15 of 25 minutes while giving the judges enough reason to back her on the scorecards.

When Namajunas is on her A-game, she’s undoubtedly one of the roster’s most dangerous women’s competitors. Yes, she’s had a few stinkers in the past, and a 1-1 record at flyweight presents a fighter still getting used to her new weight class.

The most positive element surrounding Rose would be her experience. Cortez hasn’t come close to competing versus the same caliber of opponents, and if the contest can be kept on the feet more often than not, there isn’t much chance of the underdog prevailing.

  • Namajunas is a former two-time strawweight champion
  • Cortez has never fought in a five-round, twenty-five-minute contest
  • 50% of Namajunas’ UFC wins were by decision
  • Cortez has gone the distance in all 5 of her UFC bouts

Namajunas vs Cortez: UFC 302 Betting Prediction

Do I like the current -200 UFC odds on Namajunas ? Not one bit. If Rose becomes overly cautious of the takedowns, there’s potential for a lack of offense, and this may result in Cortez grinding her out for yet another decision victory. However, we have to pick the more well-rounded martial artist, who has extensive five-round experience and has defeated much stiffer competition than Cortez in the past.

Cortez is a tough cookie, though, and I don’t expect a stoppage. Rose wins, but she’ll achieve victory on the scorecards, thus providing us with a much greater price point when backing the favorite to win by decision.
