2 MMA Prop Picks for UFC Edmonton This Weekend

1. Brendson Ribeiro vs Caio Machado: Two Losing Brazilians

I’d first like to state how Canadian supporters don’t deserve such a dumpster fire of a matchup for their main card matchmaking. Still, for some reason, the UFC thought two losing streaks going head-to-head were worthy of such a position, and so, we have Caio Machado versus Brendson Ribeiro.

Machado couldn’t hang with the UFC heavyweights, has suffered back-to-back losses since joining the promotion, and is now going to test his might at light heavyweight. Ribeiro has faltered to hang at 205lbs, has also lost his first two UFC bouts, and now hopes to snap a 2024 trend where he’s been unable to get his potent finishing ability going.

The power in Ribeiro’s fists could finally get what they deserve this weekend: a slow opponent that’s been just as lackluster in the octagon as he has. We’re looking to pick the best of a bad bunch here, and Machado feels like that guy despite being the betting favorite.

Bet This Pick: Brendson Ribeiro by Knockout (+375)

Why a Knockout Bet Makes Sense

Ribeiro is fast and powerful in striking exchanges and has excellent grappling. Unless Machado can out-wrestle him and force him to be stuck in the bottom position, I really struggle to envision where his success will stem from in this bout.

The MMA betting odds can be approached as a straight wager on Ribeiro; he’s holding plus money, after all. However, the black belt of Machado makes the submission route a difficult path to victory. At the same time, heavy hands versus a slow opponent are perfect for grabbing an insane price of +375 to see Ribeiro add another knockout victory to his record.

  • Ribeiro’s 3 most recent wins were by round 1 knockout
  • Ribeiro has won all 15 of his pro-MMA bouts by knockout or submission
  • Ribeiro has gone the distance in just 2 of his 22 pro-MMA bouts

2. Rose Namajunas vs Erin Blanchfield: ‘Thug Rose’ All Day

Thug Rose’ Namajunas is an underdog versus an unproven prospect? Eh?

This doesn’t sit right with me, especially when Blanchfield’s hype was shot down by Manon Fiorot earlier this year. Don’t get me wrong, I respect thatBlanchfield, at such a young age, ran through six straight opponents to begin her UFC tenure. However, we’re talking about a former two-time champion in ‘Thug Rose’ here!

It’s quite simple: when this fight enters the striking realm, whether short, mid, or long-range, Rose will dominate the striking numbers via elusive movement, speed, and shot selection. Of course, in top control, Blanchfield is a threat to any flyweight contender. Still, she needs to reach this position firstversus an opponent in Rose, whose scrambling ability and takedown defense will be more than enough to keep this fight standing more often than not.

Bet This Pick: Rose Namajunas by KO or Decision [+115]

Underdog Money but Better

The moneyline at BetUS Sportsbook has positioned Namajunas as an underdog, which is crazy to me. The difference in striking offensive levels will be so clear that backing Rose to win by knockout or decision can give us an even bigger plus money boost.

Let’s not forget the submission skills that initially spotlighted her name. This will make it difficult for Blanchfield to find a submission stoppage win, which I believe is her only path to victory. Across 25 minutes, we don’t know if Blanchfield has the cardio, nor can we completely trust her wrestling, even though it has been a primary asset throughout her career.

Can Blanchfield snatch a takedown or two? Probably… But she isn’t going to submit Rose, and maintaining an offensive wrestling game plan for five straight rounds versus the former world champion isn’t going to happen. Give me Rose to out-strike any up-and-coming wrestling-based opponent all day!

  • Namajunas has won back-to-back fights by decision in 2024
  • Namajunas has lost just 1 of her 19 pro-MMA bouts by submission
  • Blanchfield’s only 5-round UFC fight resulted in a unanimous decision loss
