It’s a New Year, but MMA diehards can expect the same brutal knockouts, submissions, and all-out octagon wars we’re so accustomed to seeing each and every weekend as the UFC returns to our screens following a four-week absence.

UFC Vegas 101 Parlay Picks: Bet on Gadzhiyasulov, Medic

1. Magomed Gadzhiyasulov vs. Bruno Lopes: Gadzhiyasulov ML (-240)

We have a born and bred Dagestani on our hands; as such, we’re presented with yet another incredibly long and annoying name to type out. So, first things first, and as he doesn’t have an official nickname, we’ll be referring to Magomed Gadzhiyasulov as “Gadz” for the remainder of this UFC prediction.

Extended syllable names aside, Gadz delivered a dominant Dana White’s Contender Series performance in late 2023 to book his ticket into the UFC, but a closer and less convincing win in his promotional debut against Brendson Ribeiro last summer. I’m not expecting him to dominate the 205lb weight class and become a future title contender like many Russians, but he’s riding an unbeaten streak for a reason. With a well-versed skill set, solid durability, and credible cardio, the lower echelon of UFC competition will struggle against the solid foundations he has in the cage.

Make no mistake, Gadz’s weekend opponent, Bruno Lopes, hasn’t been a guy to play with on the MMA regional scene. He’s a former two-time LFA champ, and all but two of his 13 pro career wins were obtained by KO/TKO or submission. However, his first test at a higher level of competition, which was notably Ribiero, the man Gadz defeated in his UFC debut, resulted in a round one KO/TKO defeat, a surrendering of his undefeated streak, and perhaps a reality check for UFC betting fans that we cannot back him based on his success versus lackluster opposition.

Bet This Pick: Gadzhiyasulov ML [-240]

Dagestan Roots for the Dub

With a lethargic pace, undesirable footwork, and head movement, I struggle to give Lopes much hope this weekend. He also presents a huge red flag in his fight intelligence, as he’s willing to engage in dog fights and throw balls to the wall instead of ushering in a calculating game plan.

Gadz’s top position and wrestling haven’t seen much kickback during his career, and I expect something similar here. Yes, Lopes is a finish hunter, but in doing so, he makes too many mistakes, and once he arrives within range, the takedown will be open for the Russian to have his way, should he decide on such a path to victory.

Gadz will take the power and speed advantage in the striking realm, and while he isn’t the cleanest or most technical in this area, opposite Lopes, his only downfall will be the kicking game. I wouldn’t anticipate much of this when considering this will be an additional opening for a takedown situation.

The MMA betting odds are slightly juiced in favor of Gadz, and rightfully so. He’s the more well-rounded fighter, with heavy top control and takedown threat that will be superior to anything Lopes has faced throughout his career thus far.

  • Gadz is undefeated as a professional (9-0)
  • Lopes lost to Ribeiro, a fighter that Gadz defeated in his UFC debut

2. Punahele Soriano vs. Uros Medic: Bet Medic ML (-220)

We have a welterweight banger kicking off the first UFC main card of 2025, but interestingly, it’s a former lightweight in Uros Medic taking on a former middleweight in Punahele Soriano, and this weight topic has done the rounds in MMA discussions regarding this bout.

Personally, I see it as they’ll both have to weigh 170 lbs either way. The speed advantage of Medic going against the brute strength of Soriano is likely to present itself in such a matchup. However, having displayed a cast iron chin throughout his career, the former might take that style favoring.

I once had faith in Soriano, back when he was undefeated and running through the opposition. Unfortunately, four losses in the last six bouts haven’t displayed the same desire he seemingly once had, as the man with knockout potential has been relying on much of his wrestling of late to minimal avail.

Bet This Pick: Medic ML [-220]

Take Medic Straight Up

Here’s why I’m including him in my MMA picks today: Medic isn’t going to fall victim to Soriano’s meat hooks, and in striking exchanges, we should anticipate a clean, precise, at-range kickboxing display from the Serbian. Therefore, the wrestle-heavy version of Soriano should be expected, and I cannot put faith in this game planning when his shots have been very readable in the past.

Medic can be out-grappled; we witnessed this in the Myktybek Orolbai loss. That said, cage pushing and submission attempts are a completely different style of grappling from Soriano’s, who prefers open-mat takedowns. This can often be detectable, as he isn’t the best at disguising his shots.

I believe we will see more striking exchanges than grappling, so it should be Medic’s fight to lose. He’s coming off a Fight of the Night KO performance over Tim Means, and he’s flatlined every foe that’s defeated him in the UFC. I wouldn’t be surprised to witness something similar this weekend.

The current odds at BetUS Sportsbook also lean toward Medic, but it’s parlay time, baby. Forget that juice, as our moneylines combined will jump the pricing to plus odds.

  • Medic has won 8 of his 10 pro career fights by KO
  • Medic has won 4 of his 6 UFC bouts
  • Soriano has lost 4 of his last 6 UFC bouts

UFC Vegas 101 2-Leg Parlay

  • Magomed Gadzhiyasulov Moneyline [-240]
  • Uros Medic Moneyline [-220]
