Can Angel Reese, Sky Clip Wings in Opener?

Dallas Double-Digit WNBA Favorite vs Chicago

Last month, the Dallas Wings passed on former LSU forward Angel Reese to select Ohio State guard Jacy Sheldon with the fifth overall pick in the WNBA Draft. The WNBA schedule makers delivered a delicious matchup with Dallas and Chicago meeting in the season opener for both teams. Reese won’t lack for extra motivation to pile up the points and the rebounds against one of the teams to look elsewhere on draft night.

Dallas is listed by the WNBA betting lines as the favorite against the visiting Sky despite Chicago winning all three matchups during the 2023 season.

The WNBA odds list Dallas as the 10-point favorite in Wednesday’s matchup after the line opened at -11 in favor of the host Wings.

Dallas is tied for fifth at +2000 in the odds of winning the WNBA championship. Chicago (+5000) is ahead of only the Los Angeles Sparks and Washington Mystics in the championship odds.

Reese, Sky in Full Rebuild Mode

The Chicago Sky is just three years removed from winning the franchise’s first WNBA championship. However, with the trade of Kahleah Copper to the Phoenix Mercury, Diamond DeShields and Dana Evans are the only players from that team who remained with the Sky. Even DeShields left Chicago to join the Mercury in 2022 before returning this season.

The Sky had three of the first 13 picks in the 2024 WNBA Draft but only one of them will play in the season opener.

Kamilla Cardoso, a 6-foot-7 center, is out for a few weeks due to a shoulder injury so there will be a delay for the No. 3 overall pick to make her regular-season debut. Chicago cut No. 13 overall selection Brynna Maxwell. Reese is tied for fifth at +2800 according to the Las Vegas odds to be the WNBA Rookie of the Year.

This will be the first game with WNBA legend Teresa Weatherspoon as Chicago’s head coach. The former New York Liberty guard likes what she has seen from her team in the preseason.

“You know you got something that they are together, they love each other,” Weatherspoon recently told the media. “They love playing with each other. They love practicing, if I can say that a little louder – they love practicing. They love getting better in practice and knowing it can carry over to games.”

Top-5 Picks Look to Make Wings Soar

There is not a team in the WNBA that has been more active on draft night in recent years than Dallas. Nine of the 11 players on the opening-night roster for the Wings were first-round picks. Six players selected in the top five from 2019-2024 are with the Wings, including Sheldon this year.

With Lou Lopez Senechal and Stephanie Soares not playing in 2023 and Sheldon joined by undrafted rookies Jaelyn Brown and Sevgi Uzun, five of the Dallas players will be making their WNBA regular-season debuts.

With former No. 2 overall pick Satou Sabally sidelined, there will be even more opportunities for the new additions to make their presence felt in the season opener. Led by Arike Ogunbowale, who averaged 17.3 points against Chicago last season, five of the top six scorers from the 2023 Dallas team that was 11-9 at home should be available to play.

Sky vs Wings Best Bet

With the way that Dallas likes to push the pace, the 160½-point total could be at risk.

Chicago’s first-year coach Teresa Weatherspoon was one of the top defensive guards in WNBA history. Will her team take her personality to the court on Wednesday?

There were 193 and 200 points scored the last two times that Chicago and Dallas met. Don’t expect to see those numbers repeated in this matchup. When it comes to the WNBA over/under picks, this is yet another Dallas-Chicago game that could land over the total.

Both teams are missing key players with Cardoso out for Chicago and Sabally sidelined for Dallas. Chicago veteran forward Isabelle Harrison is questionable.
