Carter, Reese Look to Help Sky End Woeful Betting Trend

Chicago has Lost Last 13 Games as a Home Underdog

Chennedy Carter drew plenty of attention for a “non-basketball play” when she body-blocked Caitlin Clark to the court as the Indiana Fever rookie waited to receive an inbounds pass. Carter certainly made plenty of basketball plays as Chicago topped Washington on Thursday, scoring 25 points off the bench. Now Carter will be facing an Atlanta Dream team that originally drafted her.

The visiting Dream is listed by the WNBA odds as a 1½-point favorite against Chicago in the Commissioner’s Cup game.

After Chicago won all three games against Atlanta during the 2022 season, the Dream turned the tables by going 4-0 against the Sky in 2023. In the two games in Chicago, Atlanta won by 14 and 11 points. All four games finished under the total.

Howard, Dream Dealing With Nightmares at Home

Atlanta stunned the WNBA with a 78-74 win over the two-time defending WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces as the 8½-point underdog according to the sportsbook odds.

It is safe to say that Atlanta has failed to build off that impressive win.

The Dream continued a brutal homestand by losing to the undefeated Connecticut Sun 69-50 and falling at home to 2023 WNBA finalist New York 78-61.

Perhaps it is good news that Atlanta is going on the road as the Dream has won two of their three games away from home this season.

A key for the Dream will be to get former No. 1 overall pick Rhyne Howard going. She had 15 points on 7-of-20 shooting in the last two games.

Atlanta has covered against the WNBA spread in just three of its last 11 games.

Angel Reese Struggling with Shot for Sky

The WNBA has a different definition for the word “shine” than most of the basketball community.

The lead story on the WNBA’s official site is on Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese leading the Sky past winless Washington in a game played not far from her hometown of Baltimore.

While the 16 points and 11 rebounds look good at first glance, a post player shooting 5-for-17 and missing three layups against the worst team in the WNBA might not constitute a “shining moment.”

Reese leads all rookies in rebounding, tops the WNBA with an average of 5.1 offensive rebounds per game and is one of two rookies (along with Caitlin Clark) averaging more than 10 points.

However, among the 43 players scoring at least 10 points per game, her field-goal percentage of 33.3% is the worst in the league.

The next step of Reese’s development should focus on finishing around the rim even if that might hurt her offensive rebounding numbers. The good news is that Chicago won the last time out.

It came after somebody was waiting for the Sky to arrive at the hotel with a camera focused on Carter. Security prevented the situation from escalating, but it was certainly a concerning turn of events.

The last five games for the Sky landed under the total.

Sky Dismal as Home Dog

Chicago Sky fans might want to cover their eyes at this next stat. Chicago has lost its last 13 games as the home underdog and that includes three games this season. The Sky has covered in five of those games.

Atlanta has covered in just three of its last 11 games as a road favorite.

Atlanta is 10th or lower in scoring offense, field goal percentage and offensive rebounds. That final number could be the most concerning since no team does a better job on the offensive glass than the Chicago Sky.

Chicago forward Elizabeth Williams, who spent six of her 10 WNBA seasons with Atlanta, left the Sky’s last game with a knee injury and she is questionable to face her former team.

Guard Jordin Canada, who has yet to make her Atlanta debut after being acquired in the offseason, is questionable with a hand injury.

The total has gone over in four of Atlanta’s last five road games with the total set at 158.5 for this game.

Atlanta is just 3-12 both outright and against the spread in its last 15 road games.
