Taurasi 10,000 Points Headlines Matchup

The Atlanta Dream will travel to face the Phoenix Mercury on Thursday in a game with teams trending in different directions. Despite struggling right now, the Dream have moved into third place in the Eastern Conference, compared to the Mercury, who are tied for the worst record in the league.

However, WNBA news is heavily focused on Mercury’s guard Diana Taurasi. She is 18 points from 10,000 in her career and will be the first player in the league to reach that number.

Dream Trying to Get Consistent Again

A big reason the Dream find themselves in the position they are in is a seven-game winning streak. Six of the wins happened before the All-Star break, which has seemingly been a turning point for the team. In the seven games since the break, WNBA lines for the Dream have shifted slightly, with the team struggling.

On the season, Atlanta has the fifth-best offensive rating, averaging the fourth most points per game, 84.3. Their pace, the fastest in the league, has been a big reason for the offensive success, along with the strong performances from Allisha Gray and Rhyne Howard, averaging over 17 points per game. However, the offense has struggled over the last seven games, with the third-lowest offensive rating.

In the Dream’s last game, they faced the Las Vegas Aces, who tend to change teams’ scores and odds on their own. The Dream lost 93-72, bringing their post-All-Star break record to 3-4. Atlanta has only scored more than 80 points once since the break, doing so in every game during the winning streak.

Mercury Looking for Silver Lining

It has been hard to find a silver lining this season, with the Mercury tied for the worst record in the league. However, Taurasi getting close to 10,000 points has been something to keep track of. While it won’t change the team’s WNBA odds, it will be a historic moment, and Taurasi is clearly trying to get it done sooner rather than later.

Over the last two games, Taurasi has reset her season-high twice, with 24 points against the Chicago Sky and 29 facing the Indiana Fever. Taurasi’s shooting from behind the arc has increased her scoring production, hitting five 3s in each of the last two games. In her previous six games, Taurasi averaged 20.7 points, shooting 44.7% from three on 7.8 attempts.

However, the Mercury lost their last two games, extending their losing streak to four. The absence of Brittney Griner didn’t help. She’s taking time to focus on mental health and is listed day-to-day. However, Griner’s absence has opened up more touches for Taurasi to take over games and get closer to 10,000 career points.

Dream vs Mercury Picks and Prediction

Based on the standings, the Dream seems like the best choice for WNBA picks, and they should be. However, based on their recent play and how Taurasi has been scoring lately, this game might be closer than most expect. On top of that, if Griner is playing, and with this game being a home game, it might get competitive in the fourth quarter.

The Dream is listed at -340 in our Vegas WNBA lines. This means that if you wager $100 on Dream, you have a chance to win $29. The Mercury is +280, offering a chance to win $280 on a $100 wager.

The implied probability attached to the betting lines gives Dream a 77.27% chance to win, with Mercury at 26.32%.
