Liberty Take 8-Game Win Streak into Desert vs Brittany Griner, Mercury

Can anybody stop Jonquel Jones, Breanna Stewart and the New York Liberty? New York has won eight games in a row and, ironically, the winning streak began with a hard-earned win over the Phoenix Mercury. The WNBA spread has the Liberty favored on the road in Tuesday’s matchup.

New York has won its last four games against Phoenix but has covered in just two of those contests. The Mercury covered as a 14-point underdog in the first meeting of the season between the teams. Phoenix has won seven of the last 10 home games against New York.

The WNBA betting line has New York as the 5-point favorite. Phoenix is 8-1 outright and 7-2 ATS in the last nine games between the teams with a line at -6 or under. New York has -220 odds to win the game outright while Phoenix has +180 odds to even the season series with the Liberty.

New York is second at +175 in the odds of winning the WNBA title and could be on the verge of overtaking the two-time defending WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces as the front-runner to win the franchise’s first WNBA title. Phoenix is sixth at +3300 in the championship odds.

Liberty Have Strong Finishing Kick

The New York Liberty have won enough big games not to sweat it out if things aren’t going well.

The Liberty could have easily lost their last three games.

New York was trailing Connecticut by three points after three quarters on the road before outscoring the Sun 25-15 in the fourth quarter.

It took a pair of Breanna Stewart foul shots with 2.1 seconds to go in the third quarter to keep New York from entering the fourth quarter tied up against last-place Washington. New York made enough plays to keep the Mystics from pulling off the biggest upset of the 2024 WNBA season.

The Liberty were down to Las Vegas by six points in the third quarter the last time out before taking over and winning by eight.

New York is 5-1 against the WNBA odds in its last six games.

Kahleah Copper, Breanna Stewart Lighting It Up

For those who love offense, it might be wise to check out the third quarter of the New York-Phoenix matchup.

Four of the top 11 scorers in the third quarter of games this season will be taking the court in this game.

Kahleah Copper of the Phoenix Mercury is third (behind only A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces and Dearica Hamby of the Los Angeles Sparks) in third-quarter scoring.

New York’s Breanna Stewart is fourth on that list thanks while the Mercury’s Brittney Griner and Diana Taurasi are putting up 4.8 and 4.7 points, respectively, in the third quarter of games.

Phoenix has covered in five of its last six games.

Is Eight Enough for Red-Hot Liberty, Jonquel Jones?

Breanna Stewart was pretty quiet the last time she faced Phoenix. The reigning WNBA Most Valuable Player had 13 points on 4-of-10 shooting in 37 minutes in a three-point win. Perhaps squaring off with fellow United States Olympian Brittney Griner brings out the best in Stewart, who averaged 27.7 points and 11.3 rebounds against the Mercury a season ago. A 43-point effort certainly helped her scoring average.

Jonquel Jones is coming off a 34-point game against Las Vegas and is averaging 28.3 points in her last three games.

New York has covered against the sportsbook odds in five of its last six games on the road. However, Phoenix is 4-1 ATS in its last five home games.

Four of the last six games for the Mercury went under the total. With New York in the top three in the WNBA in both scoring offense and scoring defense, the Liberty have proven they can win defensive slugfests or games with plenty of offensive fireworks.

Guard Courtney Vandersloot is doubtful for the Liberty while forward Nyara Sabally is out. Phoenix, which is 3-1 and is averaging 91 points since Brittney Griner returned to the court, looks to have everybody available for this matchup.

The total is at 171 for this game and that is 17 points higher than the other game on Tuesday so this could be an entertaining affair.
