Wings in playoffs, Liberty burning daylight

The last two spots

Dallas did take care of business Monday night, becoming the sixth WNBA team to clinch a spot in the playoffs. It was an 86-77 home win over the New York Liberty that did the trick, accomplished without leading scorer (and former WNBA scoring champion) Arike Ogunbowale. Now, in this Wednesday rematch, New York finds itself in a must-win situation if the Liberty want to join the Wings in the postseason.

It’s been a bit of a roller-coaster season for both teams, with injuries playing a role. Dallas finishes the regular season with a .500 record at home with a victory. New York is only 5-11 on the road, wrapping the away portion of its season Friday night in Atlanta against the Dream. New York is just a half-game behind Atlanta for the eighth and final playoff spot. They conclude the regular season Sunday afternoon in Brooklyn.

It’s wrong time for struggling Liberty

When New York began August with back-to-back home wins over the Los Angeles Sparks, the Liberty’s playoff chances seemed to be solid. With the next two games against a Phoenix team without Skylar Diggins-Smith and Diana Taurasi, then a Dallas squad without Arike Ogunbowale, there was a chance for New York to take advantage of the situation(s). Now, disappointing defeats have New York on the outside of the playoff structure. A Wednesday would not hurt.

New York was outrebounded in both of its losses recently. That is something Liberty would like to fix heading into the encore with the Wings. The Liberty was a -6 in the offensive rebounding department. This isn’t a new phenomenon this season. New York averages 36.5 rebounds and 7.8 offensive rebounds in 13 victories, 32.8 rebounds (6.8 offensive boards) in 20 losses.

Something to consider for those who bet online is New York is 3-6-1 against the spread in its last 10. The Liberty are 0-4-1 against the WNBA betting lines in the last five contests on the road.

Wings without Ogunbowale, for a while

Dallas did earn the berth-clinching win Monday without top scorer Arike Ogunbowale. Her former Notre Dame teammate, Marina Mabrey, had 31 points. The team said Ogunbowale underwent surgery to repair a core muscle issue. She’ll miss the rest of the regular season, and at least the first round of the playoffs.

Ogunbowale will miss the rest of the regular season and the team’s upcoming first-round playoff matchup. We will provide further updates at the appropriate time.

So, the offense went through Mabrey, Alisha Gray, and Teaira McCowan, as the trio combined for 41 of the team’s 66 field-goal attempts, 65 of the 86 points as well.

Good news for Dallas is it seems unlikely that the Wings’ playoff positioning get impacted by the results of the rest of the regular season. Dallas is 2½ games behind the fifth-place Washington Mystics, three games ahead of both the Atlanta Dream and Phoenix Mercury.

During the current five-game winning streak by the Wings, Mabrey is averaging 19.6 points and 4.6 assists, McCowan is contributing 17.6 points and 13 rebounds and Gray is averaging 11.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and four assists per game.

Dallas is 4-1 against the WNBA betting lines over the last five.

Liberty vs Wings Prediction

Ogunbowale isn’t the only key injured player. New York’s Natasha Howard missed Tuesday’s game (ankle) injury and is questionable for this contest. Dallas’ Satou Sabally has been ruled out for the game.

Dallas has won seven of the last nine meetings with New York, with 10- and nine-point victories in the two games this season. Also, the home team has won nine of the last 11 games in the series. Dallas has covered eight of the last dozen against Liberty.

New York’s Sabrina Ionescu is averaging 24.5 points, seven rebounds, and five assists in two games against the Wings this season.

Mabrey and Gray are a combined 10-for-20 on 3-pointers in two games against New York, 12-of-14 from the line.

Now or never for Liberty. Check the status of Howard, because if she is out again, that will certainly impact the chances for New York in this game.
