New York didn’t waste much time taking control in the pivotal Game No. 3 in the semifinals series with a 37-point explosion in the first quarter on the way to covering when listed by the WNBA odds as a four-point road favorite.

New York, which lost the first game of the semifinal season at home, can eliminate Connecticut with a road win on Sunday and reach the WNBA finals for the first time since losing to Los Angeles in the 2002 finals.

The Liberty have won four of their last five games in Connecticut.

The WNBA semifinals marked the first postseason clash between the Eastern Conference rivals since 2012. The Sun swept that best-of-three game series as they were favored in both games. The last two games between the teams finished over the total after the previous eight playoff meetings between the Sun and Liberty finished under the total.

The shots were not falling for the newly-minted regular season MVP Breanna Stewart in the first two games of this series and in the playoffs.

Stewart was 10-for-38 from the field in Games 1 and 2 after going 12-for-41 in the two-game sweep of Washington.

It was a different story in Friday’s game. No stranger to playing in Connecticut since she was a four-time All-American and four-time national champion at UConn, she made herself right at home by making 11 of her 19 field-goal attempts in the Game 3 win. It was her second game with at least 25 points in this year’s playoffs.

When Connecticut took Game 1 in the series, the Sun’s starters outscored New York’s five starters 72-55 as former Sun star Jonquel Jones was the only New York player in the starting lineup to make more shots than she missed.

It was a different story in Game 3. Alyssa Thomas was her typically brilliant self with 23 points, nine rebounds and 14 assists. Olivia Nelson-Ododa, starting in place of Rebecca Allen, added 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting. However, DeWanna Bonner and Natisha Heideman were a combined 5-of-20 from the field.

Connecticut will need all of its starters to contribute if it wants to see the series back to New York for a winner-take-all Game 5.
